Finished iteration 1 on the bumper. Still have some wiring to complete on the winch, and brackets for the controller.

Looks good from the front at 10 feet. Will need some recutting and pinch weld to look good at 3 feet.

Looks killer. Nice job with the install and it’s been fun watching your progress. Would you post some side shots of the truck?

New bumper helps out the front back balance a lot visually. Digging the massive tire exposure.

Haven’t measured the approach angle, but assume it is slightly worse, bumper projects 1” further forward than stock.

Added bulb trim except on the wings, that part I hope will be in tomorrow.

The exciting bit is that the new airflow is silent. The dorkel is no longer whispering at freeway speeds.

The bumper is getting a lot of attention. Normally no one gives my truck a second glance. I’m now three days running people asking to take pics. Two wanted to take pics of the bike rack, another the wheels. No one has ever asked to take pics before. I guess the bumper completes the gestalt.

Long day at mt St. Helens. Were planning on staying the night, but ran into locked gate after locked gate (8 times), on the way out from Johnston’s ridge. Eventually just had dinner at an overlook and bailed home.

Still had a pleasant 10 mile hike down into the blast zone. Heavy clouds until noon, then burned off into a warm mountain day.

Finished wiring the winch.
All it buttoned up and somehow works first time.
V1 of controller mount zip tied to grill.

Hollowed out a hockey puck to keep the rope out front.

Nice use of "gestalt"!

Pulled the rope off and put my homemade line lock on. Got 7 wraps - should be good.

Rope looked fine.

Rope splicing directions. Added a couple fids and fence wire to the drawer.

Bumpered up, no longer need front recovery points

Installed some round led lights on the bumper. They are Ironman4x4 Blast II 7” 48w. Easy fit up as I’ve already got a dedicated 6 gang light switch in the cab. Just had to join the Ironman4x4 pigtails into the breakout box under the hood.

Lights used 10mm hole and secure with a single bolt. Frames use two bolts at the centerline. I put purple locktite on the frame to light bolts as @tbisaacs had a bolt vibrate out on him.

Coating and pigtails look solid. Definitely the nicest lights I’ve owned.

Lined up the center with the winch access cutout on the bumper, and the lower corner of the grill. Just enough space to mount the pads and have some room for adjustment left to right.

Warn via their storefront are selling the Polished epic items at 70% off.

Refactored my recovery bags and got them to fit in the drawer.
It’s packed in there now.
From back - rarely used tools and spares, one bog out and 15m extension, electrical bag, tie downs and ratchet straps, water filters, dinnerware, flashlights. Trash bags, valve/tire repair kit (under)
Snatch rope, tree saver, static rope
Hammer/hatchet, stakes for changing room, tool roll, (under)
Air up stuff
Recovery bag - recovery ring, two 4T shackles, five soft shackles of various sizes, saw, hitch point, extra hitch pin, extra gloves
Gloves. Flashlight, shovel, rag, trax handles for when they’re installed

What didn’t fit- the obdii reader is now in the wing, along With the first aid kit and solar generator and capacitor jumper. The winch controller and cable too. The collapsible bucket is behind the drawer between the seat.

I previously had the ropes and recovery bag outside the drawer, and may put it back outside the drawer when I’m likely to Need it.

I think I’ll sell the 2nd bog out. Just don’t think I’ll need it while I’ve got a winch.

I love a good skinny. Confirmation bias is a real thing, but the points made and measurements taken are certainly a useful starting point.

That is better!

Put on spring rubbers on the front springs to attempt to fix the soft see saw ride since I put the bumper and winch on.

LX 570 Custom Springs? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/lx-570-custom-springs.1017310/post-14592264

They work a treat And completely resolved the issue with see saw and bouncy. Soft mode is available again. No issues with getting to low mode.

Size for front is B and B. Rear would be B+, B, or two B.

I’m considering a set of the softer compound for the rear.

<edit: these spring rubbers are a strong recommend for Armored up LX570 with bumpers and winch. Only $40 and get your ride back to where it was. If you have a steel bumper and heavy winch I suggest the next rubber hardness (black)>

Was going to run the winch line thimble free, but had a rethink and decided to put on a basic gusseted thimble.

Original line had a throw away thimble on it (the cheapest type, it fell out when I took tension off the loop) and an interesting double inverted pass thru loop, with about 12” of bury and only four or five strands tapered. Not the strongest with that minimal tapering.

Replaced with a triple pass thru with 24” buried. Tapered the additional strands.

Played around with a hollow fid and a length of 9 ga fence wire, both worked fine.

Found a cold joint in the crimp on the 00 wire running from battery to contactor for the winch. I bought a hydraulic crimper for this install, looks like I need to take a training on its use. length is 12”, I’m just going to buy a prebuilt replacement.

On the plus side I got to troubleshoot all the winch wiring and switches.

While I was at it fiddled around with some spare hoods and covered up the positive terminal on the battery.

Why no thimble or flat link?
No thimble was to have a no metal front end, but I decided the tighter bend radius of having no thimble might compromise the rope (on a soft shackle for instance) so I put a thimble on to remove that issue. Probably wasn’t an issue.

I have an epic sidewinder, it’s on eBay at the moment new in box. Have all soft recovery items, so even though it would be probably totally safe, it’s just not necessary. It’s a huge chunk of aluminum and I have zero interest introducing it to the recovery system. If I have to introduce a shackle to item, like a sharp recovery point on another rig, I am carrying regular 4T shackle for that.
