Great job!

I'm new here but have had a 72 for about 25 years, really enjoyed your thread ! I hope you keep it, something nice about knowing every nut and bolt. On that theme, I noticed you talking about pest control if you store it. I live in Arizona, we have pack rats that can destroy vehicles in a matter of days or weeks. I have tried the bounce, moth balls etc. With little luck. The best thing to date is a slow flashing( every second or so) led strobe, you can find them for cheap, 12 volt, need very little current, and the little bastards can't stand them! Best of luck and nice job once again!

 you're right, you never are! Just ordered a Remflex gasket for the impending surprise valve job and a fitting to replace that s***ty poly tank with a metal one I sourced on Mud.
Don't buy a poly tank. Repeat - DO NOT BUY A POLY TANK FROM CCOT. These are garbage. I paid shipping for it thinking I could seal it up. Nope.
I can't believe they still sell these things.

Isn't "ccot" Texan parlance for buying a dog turd?

I do a lot of cost comparison when I can't buy from the dealer (who is always cheaper btw) and sometimes find certain items only available by one vendor. I would not really generalize CCOT like that. I have had decent luck with them. I did not get the tank from them. It was passed down by another Mudder who duscovered how much it leaked. :meh:
There are far worse vendors than ccot imo and they do not charge inflated shipping and handling fees.

Probably true about ccot (and certainly true about dealer prices-I love seeing things on Ebay sell for 30% more than dealer prices). I had two really bad experiences with McClung and have never gotten past it-the first a chalked up to experience, the second to him actually not being a nice person.

Nekid doors.

Thanx Aaron.
I continued to work on the doors today. I sprayed the inside with some cheap rust converter rustoleum I had laying around. Got a good coat in the inside bottom. I figure anything is better than what was there. I filled a few small holes with POR15 epoxy - that s*** is the bomb. Once dry I painted the bottom of the doors with por15 as well as the inside of all the window channel and the entire channel that extends into the inside of the door. I removed the vent window locks and sanded and painted the frames. I left the glass in the frames this time. Last time I did a set of doors I removed the glass and replaced the rubber - pita!
I got the donor head back from the local machine shop yesterday so I painted the front, back and spark plug side. It is ready to swap in. Finally, I messed with ever fuel tank that is going in place of the s***ty poly tank. I had to order an -an fitting for it.
Last thing I did was put the rear cross member reflectors on. They came from ccot, were expensive but worth it. I think they look pretty cool.

Worked on swapping the head today. Looks like I had two bad exhaust valves.

This is the old one before it came out. :meh:

Got the new one in and torqued down and the manifolds and carb back on. That was a beotch. Chasing the threads in the block was a PITA too. Put the push rods in and the rockers back on. Still need to torque them. And then need to put the t-stat and alternator back on. Almost 8 hours to do what I did. I am pretty wiped.

wow!!! I totally did not expect you would be doing this so soon!!! great job... it is a huge PITA.. trying to lift the head on there and lean over the truck and not mess up the head gasket. did you do that by yourself. I was under the impression you were not that strong? :-)

I certainly am not that strong. I attached the front to the cherry picker and :princess lowered the front as I manhandled the back in place. Pretty sure I did not do any damage to the HG but it was touch and go there for a bit.

Finally got the head buttoned up and the valves adjusted today.
I adjusted the valves cold first at .010 and .016 inches first (.002 wider than they are supposed to be hot).
Started it right up and blew all kind of grey stank smoke out of the exhaust pipe for a minute or two but then it cleared up and ran like a top. I took the truck around a few miles and got some looks before heading back to the shop and adjusting them hot once again.

Then I discovered oil all over the floor. WTF?
I started wiping everything up trying to determine the source and bumped the oil filter - it was barely finger tight. It had to be coming out of there.
Tightened that and wiped the mess up.

Didn't have time to check it again - the wife's co-workers are coming over for holiday drinks.

Just five more things on the list I can think of:

Finish the doors
Make some front off road light mounts
Swap out the awful poly fuel tank
Mess with the heater blower switch
Find and install some windshield defrost hoses

Dum-ass!!!

:)

Nice work Chris!

Right?
Not like I have ever been a helicopters mechanic or anything

Go here: http://www.mcmaster.com , search for "duct hose", choose the internal diameter, etc. on the left and narrow down what you want. They have lots of different choices. They ship promptly and usually cheaply.

I've been considering installing some kind of booster fan in my defrost circuit; hardly any air comes out of there. Rebuilding the heater box made a big difference but it's still too wimpy on defrost. I think my '82 hoses are smaller than yours though and that's probably the problem.
