the DSRTRDR is getting some TLC . . .

It's going to need some splines on the end. The spline section, along with all of the parts for the lower shaft are provided by a donor from a 2nd gen Runner. We harvest these whenever spotted on our P&P runs.

The taper and index hole/pin are installed on the lathe. Makes it easy to align and weld.

More parts hacked off of the donor shaft.

A hunk of tube prepared to join them.

Slipped together.

All welded, ready to go. The end to the right connects to the upper column. The left to the box, has a nice little extension that helps it sneak past the shock tower.

A plate was cut, welded to the firewall end of the column tube. All of the bolt holes line up, when the pic was shot, it was just setting there to get a measurement. :o

A bit of repurposing in action. The frame reinforcement plate for the steering box was cut from this piece of metal, imported from some faraway excitic location! The Tubes are from old FJ40 tie rod, very beefy and the perfect size. :hillbilly:

... making a custom shroud anyway...

God forbid, a fan shroud.

I suppose you can't use the one she made me clean up and nicely coat w/ RustBullet some 7 years ago... :)

Nope, a far superior Dave Gore model!:flipoff2:

This likely isn't a total shock, but, more manglage was detected! Debating cutting the plate out replacing with a stronger one or welding it up (most likely). :hillbilly:

at least I have a perfect record of finding my own frame cracks . . .

Love the column turned out great! How does it look for this week? I was thinking of taking another day Like Friday and coming for the day Maybe get the rest of the axle together and hung? Let me know. As far as Claudia finding her own cracks staying away from that it can only go bad!

I hope you didn't throw away a good lathe just to patch up a frame :grinpimp:. But I too would be proud to have a little "Hardinge" steel welded to my truck.

You know, could be worse... when he made the front bump stop lowering brackets for my Blazer, he used metal cut from a Harbor Freight trailer hitch...

Come to think of it: maybe what goes on that frame has to be 'period-correct' steel? :hhmm:

Hey Claudia I am just laughing because your frame is getting blinged out one section at a time no Patina anymore.
