Build The 60 known as Mamabear: a tale of rust and good times.

My buddy @RiggityJ came and visited. We did a tune up on his 40 and then traded trucks while I benchmarked it.

The 60 is a really turn key, non nonsense driver. Runs better than it looks and that’s my goal.

Mamabear drives like a Cadillac compared to the 40. 😂
It’s really point and shoot.

You thought I was gonna flip the 40. And you were literally drinking an espresso pinkies up.

Hardly. I'm just saying comparing Dobinsons and OME are like having a Chevy vs Ford debate around the campfire, nether are Toyota. We see similar warranty rates, lean/rake and shock failure issues between the two. All super minor but less than Toyota parts fwiw.
Would love to be able to buy a Toyota 3 inch lift kit for the 40 and 60

Come to the dark side ... shackle reversal.

(Actually don't)

From what I understand the Aussies have real tight laws about vehicle modifications so 33" tires on an OME/Dobby lift is pretty standard for a built up off-roader down there. They do just fine.

The 60 is preparing for its next phase in life. I've always tried to be patient and find the specific parts that let me build this truck exactly like I want it to be.

It's a tool before a classic truck, and I won't change that.

So, the 2F is tired. It burns and leaks oil but runs great. It will take the truck to 90mph on flat ground, go from sea level to 14,000 ft with a factory rebuilt carb and do everything I've ever asked of it. But it needs to be better.

So, with the help and patience of @samc2447 at Northwest Design and fabrication, I'm putting a 12HT diesel in it.

Let's put the best engine in the worst truck.

I've got a few reasons for this:

-I want a diesel, need the sounds.
-I love the diesel torque.
-I really enjoy the mostly bolt on nature of this. (only major mod is welding on the frame mounts)
-It keeps the vehicle dynamics mostly the same.
-I expect 20-25mpg highway.
-No electronics

The swap cost will be similar to a properly executed LS swap, with less power and more oem parts. No adapters needed.

I plan on keeping this truck forever. Let's make it a forever engine swap.

I just spent 5 days driving a friends HJ61. I already had this, but that truck made me go overboard.

All jokes aside, I am stoked for you! 12HT is a beautiful thing! I have a small amount of Toyota Diesel Envy from hanging with @The Machinist

@HemiAlex I think this is a super smart move, in particular since you are most interested in the ‘tool’ aspect of your rig.👍

I ‘may’ do similar…I probably won’t, mainly due to the cost AND the fact that I fully rebuilt my 2f in 2018, but still may do so. Very interested in how this goes for you…$$, etc.etc.

You are very fortunate to be this close to Cooper. @samc2447

I’m gonna be very transparent about this.

My 2F was on borrowed time at 277,000 miles when I got it. I refreshed it and have taken it to 352,000 miles. It will be at 360,000 or more before I swap it. The plugs look like trash every time, it’s leaking from the front seal, and also from the rear crank bolts because I didn’t put RTV on the threads. This combo is very likely going into my 40 as is. No changes.

My main reasons were that this bolts directly to my current h55f with the right bell housing.

I was looking at HZ/HD variants but I don’t want to start over on a trans since my 5 speed shifts amazingly and is completely broken in. It’s a Georg built @orangefj45 combo from 2018 new h55f and refreshed split case. Zero issues with just two fluid changes.

Thanks for calling this smart.

I base it all on desire and emotion. No logic here.

I just want to make tractor noises and go more normal speeds.

None of us are here because of logic! Please keep us all up to date with the cost of the 12ht swap! I remember looking into it! Rebuilds are wild expensive! Im so jealous of you having coop in your corner! Going to be sweet!

He is the only reason that the 62 is as complete as it is.

Sticking a 12H-T into my 60 is something I've wanted to do since first buying the truck, but before I was aware of how good that motor is, I had the 2F professionally rebuilt so couldn't justify the additional cost (even when SOR was selling running 12H-T half-cuts for $6K !) of buying the 12HT to just have half a covered truck carcass in my backyard attracting rodents and black widows... Not to mention Kalif smog BS of actually doing it...

Not a big fan of the Cummins conversions....

Good choice and good luck!

That's an amazing price. After discussing what @CruiserTrash is paying to rebuild his 2F, I feel good about going forward with this.

Full transparency. I'm weighing out only doing what is needed to make it good to go. If we tear into it and the bottom end looks good, I'm going to refresh the head, injectors and turbo. Then, swap it in.

I have modest expectations from it, and I'm not pushing it very hard.

I think that aside from shipping costs, you can rebuild the core of the 12HT for the same cost as a 2F. Parts are just harder to get.
