One thing I forgot to cover on the Sniper install.

With the Sniper I highly recommend an active vent/charcoal system. This is a high flow system that puts lots of fuel through the return.

In order for Charcoal systems to work they need vacuum.

Toyota had a check valve in the spaghetti system to that often gets tossed out when you desmog

I add a T into the vacuum advance line to only make the truck pull vacuum on the charcoal at RPM not at idle.

That way you don’t have the sniper fighting extra raw gas fumes at idle.

Texas Reds - Part 2 The 1967
it’s been a crazy busy 2 months since I last updated this thread. In that time I’ve finished up a couple of projects and have just not had time to get to Texas Red Too

I have been keeping it cranked when I head back to the shed and have driven it’s a few times but today I decided to take a swipe at this one while my other projects are caught up or waiting on parts.
Rolling in this morning. Not sure what I’ll do first

I decided to see what I could get out of this massively faded hood. The goal here is to stop the surface rust and try to pull out as much original red as possible

Not exactly sure why I had the hood up for a picture, but I will say, I really really wish this engine was in my FJ45. It’s super strong and smooth

Right side of the hood CLR treated. Took a lot of the white out of the red.

I broke out the Fluid Film gun and went to town soaking the underside and giving it a good once over

Got carried away and forgot to take some side by side shots. This one I’ve only done 1/2 the windshield. You can see how much red came back from under the faded whitish

Lots of progress on this time capsule.
I love the fact that the original red paint and the rubber bumpers are still on the hood latches. Paint on the mirror arms peaked out with some scrubbing.

Grabbed a set of Deestone 700-15’s and slapped them on.

Working my way around it. Done for the day.

Giving GOAT some competition. Maybe there needs to be sub=categories for GOAT.

Would like to see pics of the Goat in Red Too’s
Hood...normally a silly request, but for the guy who only sleeps 2 hours per night...

Ain’t got time for that

This truck is unbelievably complete unless we are talking rubber and gaskets. Top. Doors. Suspension.

I pulled it off so I can drive it around and not shoot myself in the head over all the rattles.

These seats though. Truly outstanding

what's the deal with the hood and fenders? It looks more like someone took a grinder to it then natural fade

I think this truck was badly painted a LONG time ago. Plenty of bondo on the fenders and tub and it’s faded off. I’m thinking those are the old sanded spots before the second paint job.

A little help here.......this truck has one of the old school locking gas caps. No key.

@Drewk was just twisting it on and off but it seems now it’s locked.

Any chance these keys are universal? Any way to easily pick the lock?

This thing is a real runner. New Aisin 1 barrel (small window). Super smooth acceleration. Nice low idle. Purrs like a kitten

There are always those questions when you find trucks like this where the owner has passed away with the story.

One of them on this one is why the green transmission hump?

How does the truck have no rust in the normal spots but holes in the rear floor?

I know this might rub some folks wrong but I think Toyota’s metal work quality was inconsistent in these early-ish days, and that’s why some things rusted and other things didn’t. I’ve found completely uncoated metal in some areas - inside rocker panels for instance - that screams mass production.

But if I was looking for a 40, this is the rig I’d hunt down.

This thing looks to me like something that was man made.

For sure the paint. I still dig the s*** out of it because it’s not fake. I hate fake Patina.

As for the floor back there. I’ve seen rust there but never when there is none in the front floors and the rear channel. Maybe a battery leaked out.

As for Toyota metal, the worst ones are the 79-83 fj40s and any Pig. Pig is mainly due to design flaws that trap everything

Someone needs to take this ball and run with it. Message me if you want to talk about it

I figure while it’s still lined up on the lift and I’m caught up on the 45 project I’d get the suspension bushings sorted out. Or lack of bushings.....,
