Is the AC controls supposed to be lighted? my AC button has a light on it but the rest of the controls don't.:frown:

Yep, maybe have a bulb out. :)

On the back side of the pannel there is a small bulb that lights up that area. Kind of a pain to get to the bulb but it's back there.I just changed mine it was a small skinny slender bulb not like what we have as dash board lights.

Man the back of my dash was full of dust when I changed mine out.

so i have to take the dash apart to get in there and change the bulb?:bang:

No, pull the tabs or buttons off your AC controls and slides then grab a screwdriver and pop the thin plates off where the cold and hot temp and air position is. The bulb is behind there. The should be a clear platic part with two screws and a bulb behind it.

Man , I should have had you over to get this done for me last time I changed bulbs

 I haven't owned one in a while but gotta love Toyota's engineers I had a 86, 93, 95 Taco, 98 4-Runner. My youngest brother a 85 and 89, Mom 95 4-Runner and Dad 93 Extended cab "The Little Mule". All were 4WD

I did the maintenance on all of them. Which was never anything really major. The funny thing is if you worked on one you could work on any because they pretty much were are all the same. I haven't been around the reworked Taco that started in 2000 but I'd be willing to bet they didn't venture to far from the tree. Its just works.

Whats interesting is how many you see when you roam the junk yards. Personally hardly ever. People are still picking them up and dumping money in them to reuse them. A good example Matt is headed to Alabama to pick up a 82 model to resurrect it and hit the trails with. More than the cars the the trucks, runners and cruisers seem like they live forever as long as they'll keep selling us the gas to put in them. I can see if the prices get cheap enough on the imported diesels they may be reborn as vegi-burners :D

Dad put 600,000 miles and counting on his last two Toy trucks 93 4Cyl PU, 00 Tundra now serving farm duty.

Mom put 480,000 miles and counting on her 95 4-Runner, 02 Sequoia

 damn good trucks.

I know some of us have looked for non USA rigs before just to take advantage of the FF rear.

Anyway, I'm sure it's very very old news to many like Theriot who ALWAYS seem to know this stuff but I stumbled across a conversion kit:

Front Range Off-Road Fabrication

Gonna copy to tech..

Not only are they absent from the junk yards, but you don't find many on the used car lots either. Seriously, try and look for 90s era through today used Toy 4x4 pickup. There aren't many and if one turns up, they don't last long.

Metaltech Family Cage

Has anyone installed one of these? The kit is 1/2 the price of the assembled one, but I'm thinking welding/fitting/paint or coating might put it close to that.

:D

Yup.... sorta

Use the "club welder" whoever that is and it's worth doing the kit. Just did the Jackson Cage and it worked out great.

Later,

Thanks...so who's the club welder? haha

I have always admired the Family Cage from Metaltech. The thing about the assembled one is that you know it was put together correctly and you can get it already powder coated. It might be worth the extra cost. Are you considering the frame tie ins? I think if you want function, they are a good investment. I would also get the grab handles. Those look like a great option at little extra cost.

Yeah Armond, those are all good points and probably the route I'll end up taking. I definitely want the protection in the back because I will probably have someone there.

Yeah, I got a sorta hybrid for the troopy w/ 3 B pillars and cross ties. Little concerned about the frame tie in w/ also mounting it to the body like stock in order to allow the body to roll (ie lean) a bit. Will probably come up w/ something in between. Anyway, good product thus far. Let you know when I get the d@mn top off :bang: to get it welded.

There are more than a few folks in this area that can probably do it for you. In the club itself Will M does some welding and Landry has a machine... but no gas (welding gas that is :D)

Great product and on my list. Post a pic Jeff I know you just put yours in. The 78 won't see another trail until I have one :) Do they make one for the 80 :hhmm: gonna look I'd to add something mild :D

Plans for the 80 cage will be a B pillar behind the driver seat, a C pillar on the wheel wells and a D pillar at the flip up door. With the option of adding A pillars on if desired.

One thing about the design of the A pillar is that we won't be bending the snot out of the A's to wrap the dash. It will lose all integrity. It will be similar to our A's in the FJ40. It will be a nuisance to get in and out but that is the price to pay for a more structural design.

Not their cage... but a cage nonetheless.

Sorry for the hijack.

That's a sweet one. Looks like you might keep the glove box with it too.

I looked on their website and didn't see them offering anything for the 80, I like the above but not crazy about cramping up the leg room up front would like 6 point over the front and rear seats going to rear wheel wells in the case of roll it would support the roof from crushing in.
