i can almost see adding a single roll bar at the c pillar. that would probably provide enough reinforcement to the roof to prevent it ever pancaking in a full roll at speed. you don't really need lateral support for the bar because the roof structure would control the collapse.

I feel very safe with a cage after watching an 80's A piller collapse not moving on its top. The 80 was light with 35's and front arb only and it was in sand. 3 guys and no one was hurt.

The cage does not interfere with a 6'+ driver or the passengers. Double padding next to your head makes it no harder then the cab if your head was to hit it. The fit is unbelievable and was a strong selling point when I was buying it.

Phil, do you have any contact info for the person who did the work?

I have sent an email to Metaltech, would prefer to throw the business their way as they advertise here and from what I have seen do fine work. When I hear back from them I will post the info.

The A and B pillars are my main concern. The people I know who have been seriously injured / paralyzed in rollovers in suv's were up front. Protection at C only is probably better than nothing, but I would prefer a cage.

This comes up every time someone rolls an 80 series, search and you shall find some really good threads with a lot of info. As far as it goes on cages It is always a compromise, the more structure in the cage the higher the COG and the more likely you are to knock your noggin on it.

I am not sold on an exo or internal cage at this point, Maybe one day once the 80 is retired from driving status and is strictly trail truck.

Plans for the 80 cage will be a B pillar behind the driver seat, a C pillar on the wheel wells and a D pillar at the flip up door. With the option of adding A pillars on if desired.

One thing about the design of the A pillar is that we won't be bending the snot out of the A's to wrap the dash. It will lose all integrity. It will be similar to our A's in the FJ40. It will be a nuisance to get in and out but that is the price to pay for a more structural design.

Great. Any estimate of when?
