Body is waiting to get blasted

The guys at the shop have to replace a floor board which
I got from CCOT. There are the normal rust areas around some of the windows, the windshield frame and some other interesting and complicated spots which I decided needed to be done by the pros. The steering was very tight so I didn't get into the steering box. There are so many things to be cleaned, stripped and painted that I can't even guess when I'll be done, but it is going to be nice. I hope!

Injection pump

Ready to get cleaned up.

Fuel injection pump after a serious cleaning

2 hours of detailing and it looks better but it won't work any better because the inside is still the same. I t was working fine, so I'll take my chances. I may take the injectors to a diesel injection shop to get tested and cleaned.

New parts are coming in.

Pre-combustion chambers, new glow plugs and an exhaust valve and new valve stem seals. Also the new Clutch master cylinder. I need to get the slave cylinder as well. Maybe the head will be done soon. It don't matter, the motor ain't cleaned and painted yet. It's getting there though, just a few more passes with the wire wheel and brake cleaner.

What was wrong with the valve?

Valve

I took the head to a local machine shop and they said one exhaust valve was chipped or cracked near the seat. All the pre-combustion chambers showed small cracks which they said was normal for diesels. I think they were assuming that I couldn't get replacement chambers and they said the cracks weren't a problem as long as they didn't go into the head itself.

Looks like the engine is pretty well used.
I would recommend you to have the pump checked and adjusted, it could save you from problems in the (near) future.

I'll probably let the diesel injection shop have a look at it. I've heard they are expensive to get rebuilt, so I'm crossing my fingers that it's ok.

A lot of them just need adjusting and work well after that.

The guys from The Rod Shop (Stuart Fl.) are going to sand blast it and put the body on a rotisserie so the bottom can be done as well. Then the frame Will get blasted and painted.

Never thought I would say it but I really like the way those tires look on there. I have a friend here with a 45 with tall skinny Military tires on it and like the way they look too. Awesome build. More patience than I have. Well actually I have no place to tear down except the street lol!

Patience

The only way to tackle a rebuild is to think of it as a marathon. Each component is a separate stage of the race. That being said, I don't know how I'll get it all back together, but I know there a people here that have done it before and that's what gives me the confidence to attempt such a task.

I've added a couple of pics of the oil cooler removed, and the cooling passages to that area. I'm a little concerned about the corrosion found here. There's a freeze plug that looks to be toast and that makes 2 plugs I need to replace. Never replaced a freeze plug before, so that's going to be interesting.

Wide shot of the oil cooler section

Makes one wonder what rest of the cooling passages look like. Next is to take the oil pan off. I'll need to get some advice after seeing the bottom end of the motor as far as whether it should be rebuilt?

Why you have the engine in pieces ,, i highly recommend you switch out the hand Primer pump... The one in the pics is the old style and not very reliable.. A new Bosch one will only set you back $15, I get them from a Mercedes dealer locally..

When you price the engine you will be glad you have the new one...

Bosch fuel primer

I got this a long time ago, but haven't needed it yet. When I get the motor back together I'll install it.

Ready to take the oil pan off

I got all the bolts off the oil pan but one. It's right behind the support piece. On one side it leaves enough room to get to the bolts, but on the other side you have to remove that support arm. I'm pretty sure it needs to be connected while the motor is hanging from the stand. I'll probably use some jacks and 4x4s to help support the engine and then remove that support.

Upside down motor

I removed the lifters before I flipped the engine, now it looks like I may have some more work to do. A few of the lifters are pitted. This is where I need the diesel guru's here to chime in. Especially when I take the pan off. I'm hoping that the bottom end looks like a freshly rebuilt 2H. The lifters seem to speak otherwise.

Bottom end

After removing the oil pan, I'm impressed with how clean the bottom end looks. No major sludge anywhere, even the bottom of the pan was relatively clean. I think the motor has been opened before, but with only 213,000 Km on it, it shouldn't have needed to be rebuilt, but maybe it was. My only concern now is whether the lifters are ok. I don't know anything when it comes to engine rebuilding and what to look for as far as when it's necessary to replace the internals. It wasn't using any oil and didn't smoke much except when you first fired it up and on hard acceleration.

Nice build up mate. I'm nearing the end of a build on an Hj47 myself and was wondering if you had any detail pics of your air con. We are hoping to fit air but still have a few bits to find. Keep up the good work
cheers

I'll put some pics up of the A/C components. Check back tomorrow. I'm still trying to determine if I need to replace the pitted lifters and does that mean the camshaft should be inspected.
