Tacoma vs FZJ80

The 80 will shine on long road trips for comfort and it is so smooth and tough in the woods. Factory lockers, solid axles, coil springs= it is the best off road usa land cruiser. Period.

Any taco is super reliable and useful. Probably good enough if you can leave well enough alone. Much better around town than a built 80.

One is obsession-worthy, though draining, and one is set it and forget it.

6'0 tall = right in between = 3fe. kinda like sittin in the middle seat on an airplane or losing the call for shotgun ;)

If he's asking between a Taco and an 80 he really means between a Taco and an LX. Obviously he's not enough of a renaissance man for the 3FE.

I'd buy a 2nd gen Tundra and bolt on kings on all 4 corners. Mid travel king coilovers on the front yields almost the same travel as a LT 1st gen Tacoma. They've got plenty of room and power and with bolt on kings (and some valving) I've never been in such a smooth riding pickup. It'd be an awesome dual purpose rig.

I got rid of my 07 Tacoma for an 80 series and an 10' F350 fwiw. If a 2nd gen Tundra could tow my heavy pig of an 80 I'd buy one.

I've owned plenty of both (3FE and 1FZ-FE), couldn't get me to buy another 1FZ-FE. But I'm simple and old school. I like simplicity and reliability. :flipoff2:
 
Pure economics ... Taco, beter MPG and better resale value .. parts .. mmm yup it's new and might have more availability in the long run.

Been said that, I DD my 80 with no problems and plenty smiles ..

Actually, I completely disagree with this statement. Any 80 you buy has already depreciated fully (or near) and won't go down further in price unless wrecked or completely neglected. Whereas any late model Tacoma will drop in value like a boat anchor, as would any late model vehicle. An 80 purchased today for $6k will be worth $6k next year...The Tacoma will not hold it's value.

to run that business case you also have to factor in the maintenance cost for the 80 over the same period (in terms of $ cost of parts and your time & loss of use of vehicle)

Once you FULLY complete P/M, An 80 today Is a much better Investment . Very soon If numbers are a concern posts such as this will be VERY easy to answer. :cheers:

Maintenance costs on an 80 are not astronomical higher than on a Tacoma or any other vehicle. In fact I will argue that the life cycle cost of an 80 is better than that of virtually any vehicle on the market. I've outlined my total cost of ownership numerous times on Mud. I bought it new in 1992. Owned it 23 years. $60k total cost of ownership over those 23 years. Or $214/month. The $21k I've spent on top of the initial purchase price has been on maintenance and wear items. No catastrophic failures or breakage. The longest downtime I had was doing a knuckle job or replacing the radiator. Neither time was the vehicle "down" for more than 8 hrs.

The 80 is the better value. It is a vehicle that is completely "overbuilt" from the factory. It is designed for the harshest of conditions. A Tacoma is a fine vehicle. But a late model Tacoma is built for American roads not what an 80 is built for.

Then combine the limited availability of the 80 compared to the mass production of the Tacoma and the value of the 80 stays put or could (as some suggest) increase.

On the street it is possible even though my old taco wasn't exactly fast either. Off-road, not a chance! I wheeled with tacos before and there is simply no comparison. If anything the new trail 4Runner can comes close but definitely not the tacos. Then again if you call dirt roads/forest routes off-road then the taco is up to task.

Seriously, comparing these 2 is like comparing a Hyundai Sonata and a Benz S class......they both get down the road fine.

That's because the 80 has a smaller turning radius.
 
I like my taco and I like my super duty and i like my 3 80s.......if you ask what is the only "one" i can keep? I will say in one word, "all!"
