I am trying to figure out what sort of suspension lift I have on my '78. I believe it was set up with a very sturdy/stiff suspension, and since I am 95% on road driving, I would really like to soften it up. I don't know a lot about suspensions, but I know I have seen 3/4 ton trucks with considerably less springs than I have. Here are some photos, the spring pack in the front end is 6, and 8 in the rear.

Since I have no baseline for comparison I don't know how to say it rides compared to other suspension, but I am definitely interested in softening up the ride. Someone mentioned to me that I could likely just remove some springs, but I have 33 x 10.5 mud terrains so I need to be sure I maintain plenty clearance.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. thanks!

Looks like alcan leafs. The two main leafs have to stay. But you could try removing every other leaf in the pack and see what it does. I would leave the leafs with clamps. You will likely loose some height. And it will take multiple times of taking the packs apart adding/removing leafs to dial them in as far as height vs ride. I use grade 8 3/8" bolts successfully as center pins, usually you cant reuse a center pin once its been in use for a couple years.

the ride quality with leaf springs will never compare with coil springs so although you can soften the packs up and improve the ride you can never get it to handle like a nice comfortable modern vehicle, I've got slightly longer spring packs with flatter angle shackles in my truck which makes it quite flexy and soft on the road but also adds in increased body roll cornering
