A trick I use to locate exhaust and intake vacuum leaks is to make my own stethoscope.
Get about 4’ of vacuum hose, wedge one end in your ear and put on some hearing protection / headphones. Then take the other end of the tube and touch it around suspect areas.
You will know when you found the leak when you clearly hear it.
I like to put on slacks, a tie, and a really crispy, starched button down and start the engine. Then I lean over from the front bumper until the problem goes away.
The engine feels fine when driving, runs smooth, no weird vibrations, normal power, etc. And it got significantly quieter after tightening the loose nut on #4.
I have a new gasket for the rear manifold and a donut for the down pipe. Both will be replaced tomorrow.
Also, although it’s more fun to fly up steep inclines, I’ll bet you would have made it up that hill if you just creeped over it. Both of my land cruisers would have sauntered over that hill. One of them is completely stock on bald tires. You should try that hill again and LMK maybe let a few PSI out of your tires if you somehow still don’t make it.
Driving through Wyoming, something really bad happened.
It’s not driveable anymore :/
The knocking got louder then became the hitting sound you can hear on the video. It will start, but has no power(had to run it to get it on the trailer) and shakes a lot. Any ideas what it is? I’ll be rebuilding it soon.

I hope you make it home that does not sound good, definitely a rod knock, I was going to be all smart ass and say rev the crap out of it until it blows but I am wondering if you will make it home
That sudden change from a ticking sound to a disturbing knock occurred in Hanna, Wyoming. (No one else has heard of it either.)
Within 30 minutes our friend Alan from Overland Rock & Rally was on his way from Idaho with a flatbed trailer behind his work truck to bring the LX home. He is a great friend and they had it home the following day.

Glad you got it home. Good luck with the diagnosis. Let us know what it ultimately was.
A guy in Denver tried to sell me his LX with this same noise; said it was normal.
