hey man congrats on getting back your cruiser in decent condition. i had a feeling probably just some kids needed a ride somewhere and somehow yours was easy to grab. thats happened to me twice in the past 20 years; had to pay the storage too. both times my car (not my cruiser) was found, once by me and once by the police, within about 2 miles from where it was taken...and nothing inside was stolen, not even the cds/tapes (luckily few have my tastes in music i guess).

anyway good on ya, dont worry about those small charges for the storage etc though it is a drag, just get her back!

makes me feel safer parking mine in sf when i go for bike rides. and i frequent the sunset district right where youre talking about too.

one love

Great news on finding the cruiser! :bounce:
What a testament to the Mud community

Cabrito if I was in the area I would buy ya some  on general principal
CK, Lets see some pics of the ole girl back home!

Cabrito...holy sh*t! Between work and picking up my boy from the pound, it's been a busy 36 hour stretch and I'm just getting on MUD for the first time and catching up on this string. THANKS SO MUCH for noticing my rig and going out of your way to call the cops. As has been suggested above, I'd love to buy your a beer/steak/burrito/cuisine of your choice (except French, of course ; ) to say thanks. I'll drop you a quick note to this effect. Also, judging from the pics you sent, seems like I should save a choice set wave at the beach for you once the slick is a thing of the past.

All...when I went to pick up my truck last night, I was prepared for the worst. All the cops could tell me was that it was "driveable". After jumping through the many hurdles and waiting for what felt like an eternity for the truck to be pulled out of the pound, I couldn't believe my eyes...no visible damage! I held my breath convinced that I'd find something once it got close, but as I went through the truck a huge smile spread on my face...it's virtually untouched! Other than some wiring pulled out from under the steering column, a missing stereo faceplate (btw..who takes the faceplate, but not the stereo?), and a slightly jacked lid on the storage console between the front seats, it truly appears undamaged. Unbelieveable! :bounce::bounce2:

I was so frickin' relieved that I was even happy about dropping the cash on the towing and the impound!

btw...speaking of the wiring under the steering column...can one of you refresh my memory? Is there typically a piece of dash/fairing at the bottom of the steering column covering the wiring or is that open? It's open on mine (i.e., if you crouch down you can see the wiring in the dash under the steering column) and I can't recall if there was something there before and it's been removed or if it was always like that. Sorry for the rookie question, but I can't quite picture what it was like before "the incident".

I'll post some pics soon (likely this weekend). Many thanks for all of the support through the process and for the many eyes and ears up and down the coast (and in many other places in the country, too!). This community is a great example of what makes Cruisers so cool. Great trucks...great people.

Well, from memory, my 62 has visible wiring on the part of the column from a point directly under the dash and back.

Seems several Toys of our vintage have a weakness to thieves. The column cover being made of flimsy plastic takes nothing to crack open and get to the iggy switch. I faintly remember a TV show MANY years ago talking about theft deterrents for vehicles, and one of them was specifially made for Toy's w/ the problem. It was a thick sheetmetal column cover to replace the plastic one.

Anyone out there in cruiserland recall this?

You are welcome! - All I did was what anyone else would have done.

All...when I went to pick up my truck last night, I was prepared for the worst. All the cops could tell me was that it was "driveable". Yea your truck looked to be in good shape with no broken glass or anything. I was waiting in my car while my friend looked inside - He said there were some tools or something in the front passenger seat - did you get those back? were they yours? When my friend got his van back from being stolen the thief had left their own tools inside it. - DOH!

I was so frickin' relieved that I was even happy about dropping the cash on the towing and the impound!

I really wish I had your phone number to save you all the fees - It sucks that you have to pay that to get your own vehicle back - I know from my own experience when my old truck was stolen.

Totally awesome that you got your rig back!

Pretty freaking awesome to say the least!

I guess that SFPD 80% recovery figure doesn't account for the biased level of community interest in helping you get your ride back! h0h0!

>btw..who takes the faceplate, but not the stereo?

funny thing is, a faceplate is worth way more on the black market than a unit without one. go over to the ashby flea in berkeley sometime and see whats there...some people have a whole rack of faceplates (guess why...to put on those decks that were stolen despite not having a face on it).

anyway congrats again!

Cabrito - Good chattin' with you this evening. I look forward to meeting up soon to buy you a well-deserved ! Thanks again!!

All - In case it's not 100% obvious, Cabrito is the man! Not only did he spot my rig, but when I asked him what I could get him for thanks he shrugged it off saying he'd like to just chalk it up to the karma-bank! At least he agreed to let me buy him a drink and get together to chat cruisers soon. Three  for Cabrito!

Very glad this worked out well. I'm honestly surprised that the PD didn't stake the truck out for at least an hour or two to see who might hop in. Seems like they coulda solved this one and prevented the next one with a little patience.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the beers - really good news and everyone here is breathing a little easier - no one likes to think about something like this happening to themselves or their friends.

SFPD is under staffed, and they are more interested in recovering property :)(the good),
and collecting the impound fees :o (the bad).

OUTSTANDING, CABRITO! :cheers::cheers:

Cabrito - The new suspension is lookin' dope! Enjoy it on the trails this weekend. Nice lookin' rig, btw.

vipergrhd - Once I wash the thievin' grime off my beloved rig I'll post some pics. I also gotta stop workin' all frickin' day so that I have some daylight for said pics! Come on weekend!!

This happened to me 2 years ago January when I moved here from seattle. My 89 FJ62 was gon within 6 hours of parking it on Sacramento and Hyde. DUMBBBBB, I had no club. Either way I got her back about 5 days later with no help from the police. I used the automated ticket service through the parking authority and was calling 911 to send them to where it had been ticketed. It even had Washington plates and they couldn't find it.

They should synch up the ticket assholes with the cops hot list. Duh! I got her back with the same problems. Wiring under the steering wheel and they tried to take off the dash plate for some reason. Oh and they kicked in my stero knob (I have the original still in there).

Good to hear you got it back!! I just got mine back down here and I garage it now. I live in SF and if anyone here gets together to talk FJ's in the city I'd love to join.
