cheers tried that and vac tested the tank - bleeds off - i also ultrasonically cleaned the gas cap - that's not the prob - could it be a faulty coil?

Could be the ignition module.
It could also be a crankshaft seal. Do a pressure and vacuum test on the crankcase.
Keep your fingers crossed it is not the ignition module. They have not been available in the US since 1996.

thanks very much for that - have only done one other pressure and vac test - just getting the hang of it - will do as you suggest pressure and vac - that's scandalous you cant get the ignition module now - is it because the saw would then live forever? - it's a lovely bit of kit for sure
I inherited a stihl 032AV from the old man and looking at replacing the 16” bar but not sure what the best replacement would be?
Not sure if the chain is getting enough oil and l have over heated the chain or the bar was just worn, probably the original bar.
Is there a check to see if there is enough oil? Going over the whole saw replacing mounts etc

when sold new, the guide bar would have been a solid steel bar with a replaceable tip.
Is that what you want to replace it with?

A mate has offered me a 2nd hand 20” bar to suit with a removable tip. The 16” one it had didn’t have the removable tip but just looking for a quality replacement or is a stihl bar the way to go. My local stihl shop is not that helpful so probably have to get it online.
Not meaning to pile on but just ran across this thread. Love these saws. My father in law gave me an 056 in disrepair years ago. I restored it and now my son has it in CO. Also found an 028 in a dumpster and still had spark and compression. Still need to break that one down as well as an 075 an old friend in WY gave me years ago as it has what he thinks is a bad crank due to severe vibration. He was the original owner. Lastly, my father in law who’s close to 80 recently upgraded to a new saw to replace his original O51. He’s promised it to me at some point. Only pic I have on my phone is the 56. I’ll step back and be a lurker on this thread should it keep active. And thank you for sharing your knowledge.

A good mate has given me his old 20” bar and chain. The chain is a .404” and the 032 came with a 3/8 chain. Would it be possible to run this set up if l change the chain drive to .404”?
Following D'Animals checks on page 1 for inspecting the chain oiler gears and found the rubber plug sitting in the case. Assuming in just pushes back into the pump?
