I would consider a 17" wheel. most mfg's are going to these and it may open up some more choices in the furure.

build is looking good!

Stevo.. some of the 80's guys.. run the toyota tundra rim 17" x 7 with a 4.75 or 5" BS.

I wanted a set like that but it never came around my way...

Wouldn't a 7" rim be a little to narrow to run a 12.5" wide tire?
The recommended rim for the tires I want is 8.5"-10".
I was gonna go with 10" wides, that way if I ever want to go up in size in the future I could.

with that said....... i like my 16x8 rims....
I think 7" is too narrow....but what do I know...!!

Thanks for all of the input, Depending on the price I may opt for the 17" rims
Gonna give the company a call tomorrow and see what they say.

Hopefully by this weekend I can get the new axle all cleaned up, armored, and maybe even mocked up in SOA on the rolling chassis.

Well I got to spend some time in the shop tonight, and with the help of my friend Charles we got a lot done.

I made a new friend today. The 7" shop grinder.

While the axle was nice and clean I figured I might as well armor it.
I found some 1" x1" x.25" angle and got that welded to the bottom of the housing.
Then I took some 3/8th plate and made a pretty stout ring guard.

BEEFY!

I'm surprised to see that the 80 series axle doesn't have a removable diff cover like the 62 series and back do.

Yep. At the shop there was a lot of 3/8th plate around so I figured I would go to town on it.
I plan on putting another piece that will protect the fill plug a bit.
And also I will probably add a piece of extra protection on the bottom of the diff too.

I was going to put a truss on the top, but with the factory trussing on the bottom I don't think I will.
I'll have to see how it looks once the new perches are put on.

Spook, do any of Toyota's FF axles have removable diff covers? I thought only the SF's had them. I could be wrong though.

None of the FF axles have removable covers because there is no need. The removable cover on a SF axle is so you can access the c-clips for axle shaft removal and since there is no c-clip on a FF axle, there is no cover.

Beefy guard man, I like it.

Thanks, I like the way your frame is turning out. did you decide on a finish for it?

Yep. I'm gonna make a run up to Tractor Supply and get a case of their enamel paint. I haven't decided on a color yet though, either machine grey or black, but definitely NOT blue:flipoff2:

Nice, I think I'm gonna stick with the bedliner for mine. Roads get way to salty around me, plus I want to hit up the beach with this truck. I just want that extra protection and piece of mind.
Its gonna be black too.

TLCNorway brought up a great point with that bedliner stuff. He said he's used it and that it's a pain to grind off so you can weld on the inner metal. Since I plan on welding on my frame more in the future, that idea went out the window.

Yeah I saw that post, I have had to grind it off and weld it before. Its a pain to deal with I'll admit, but once re-coated you could never tell it was worked on. plus you get that oh so nice salt protection.
What other welding do you think you will need to do in the future?

And to TLC Norway- How bad do they salt the roads over there?

Tube skidplate, sliders, spring hangers, etc.

The way I am going to handle those things is to paint the areas I know I wont need to weld with the bedliner now, Then once all of the ancillary welding is done after the body swap I plan on coating the rest of the frame.

Pretty much once that's done I don't plan on doing any more welding on my frame.
If I do any trail welding with my OBW system, the rods should be able to go right through the bedliner.

Also it really doesn't bother me that it will be harder to clean, because with 3-4 coats of bedliner, a little mud sitting on the frame shouldn't do anything to it.
