Any 12 volt ignition on hot wire will do for the fuel solenoid.

Right, I understand how the system works, that wasn't my question. My question was which 12v source, in the FJ60 harness, in the engine bay, he used, so I could figure out something that looked clean.

When I first wired in the fuel cut off solenoid I found a 12v switched source that ended up having enough residual voltage that it kept my engine running. I ended up using the coil wire, and I haven't had any issues. Mine coil wire is brown in the toyota harness.

Good point Mike, I hadn't thought about the residual power issue. I'll use the coil wire for the solenoid

For the fuel cuttoff I wanted to make sure I didn't have any issues with residual voltage so I tied that directly into my fuse panel.
I put a switch on the line as well so I can shut the fuel off quickly and easily.
Sorry but I don't have any pictures of what I did.

Boots that's a good idea tying into the coil. I haven't have any issues with getting the motor to turn off, but if I do I might wire it to the coil.

Maybe I'm just not thinking about this right, so sorry for the dumb question, but for the starter solenoid, did you use one or wire the factory circuit directly to the Cummins starter?

I used the Toyota starter wire staight to the cummins starter. Worked fine. I also kept the cummins pigtail on the fuel solenoid and if really needed can unplug it real quick to shut my fuel off.

There are no dumb questions.

I used a wiring diagram to find out which wire went to the starter in the original Toyota harness. Then from that point I just wired it in like it was the for the stock starter.
The only thing is that the pigtail for the stock starter is on the passenger side of the engine bay and the Cummins starter is on the driver side. So it is just a matter of routing a wire over the top of the engine.

Good idea! I'll make sure to do that.

Interesting. I had read in a couple of places that a starter solenoid was necessary to be able to start reliably. Oh well.

Thanks Stevo!

Does the Toyota wiring not have a solenoid in it for starting?
I never bothered to look and just assumed it did.

Aside from the solenoid attached to the starter? I'm sure there is a relay, not sure about the presence of a solenoid.

Well that's good to know.

I had no issues getting it started without the solenoid.
It feels great turning the Toyota key and firing up the Cummins.

I hooked up my starter the same way as Steve, just tied it into the factory harness, and it's never given me any problems. The change I did make was to use the massive stepvan cable for the starter to battery connection because that diesel starter sucks it up. I think it is 2/0 sizing.

Yeah, I believe the power cable I have coming from the battery to the starter is 2/0 as well.
That is some thick cable.

Work has been absolutely crazy, I am in the process of switching jobs and I haven't had a break in a while.
I did pop over to the shop today to get the fender cut out and the holes for the intercooler tubing as well.
I hope to get the fender and intercooler tubing completed next.

If I could get a solid week to work on this I could have it all buttoned up, but there is no way I could take a week off :frown:

Work has been absolutely crazy with all the construction work going on at the shore, but I was able to get some time to work on the truck yesterday.

I nearly got the intercooler piping completed, I still need to buy some more fittings, a 90 and a 30 degree.

Hopefully I will get some time off this week to get some more completed.

Well I had another day off of work so I spent the better part of the day in the shop. :D

I got the driver side fender welded up and was able to get the final tire mounted with the spacer installed on the front axle.

I just wanted to post up a nice pic of how I have my intercooler mounted in the front of the truck.

I also got around to removing the rear bumper and channel crossmember so I can box the frame in the rear and make a custom bumper.

All I have to say is IH8rivets
I got all of them out but not before smashing my thumb a few times with the big aluminum hammer.

Yeah I really do too.

I had lost some motivation on the build because I wasn't able to work on it for a while but once I started going on the bodywork and got that last tire mounted I started getting pumped again.

Its nice to see I still have someone following the build.

I know the feeling man. Keep at it and you'll be done before you know it.

Yeah man. You're getting close. Once you start getting it back together and you're thinking "Hey, this is really starting to look like a truck again. I should be able to drive this thing pretty soon..." You'll get the motivation back.
