FSM references "mark" 11 and 17. Step 3 page TF25. in a table in reference to output shaft snap ring and axial play. What is "Mark" are they marks on the snap ring? different thickness snap ring sizes??? I understand the snap rings are used to adjust axial play just not sure what "mark" is.

My work bench is a 61 impala ...

The transmission input shaft bearing is not pressed in yet. Leave this for last along with the o-ring and sealant for the back of the idler. I pulled these gears out again and cleaned them after this last pic. The rear output gears are clean in the pic.

Last pic shows 4x4 with 2x4s on top for cribbing to set the output shaft in. I did that same thing with 4x6s for the trans and tcase. The input shaft of the transmission goes down so the t-case is facing up.

So "mark" means ...see the mark? I see this being used in the specs chart at the bottom of the FSM for shims too. but I saw no marks on my snap ring. Guess I should have put a micrometer on it before I put it back in.

Good project. It's not in the FSM but most people put a little sealant around the splines of the output shafts before sliding the flanges on. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I was going to do that... and sealant around some of the bolt threads on the ones that go through the case...around the idler o ring where it pushes into the case and the speedo threads.

Next question ...how great it fippage? FIPG toyota sealant? Is it really worth it? Looks to be around 15 to 20 buck for 3 oz.

Is this to say permatex rtv won't hold up? Just a lot of $$$ for 3 oz of sticky stuff. 00295 -1281??

I have always used ultra grey and no leaks (about 7 years and 50,000 miles on the 60s oil pan before I dropped it, put some more ultra grey on without replacing gasket and still no leaks. I did order some FIPG for the 62s pan but will probably still just use the grey.

Fipg is totally worth the 17 bucks a tube. No comparison to black rtv. None. Put an oil pan on under the truck using fipg. Then try it with rtv. You’ll kick yourself.

Grey rtv for tcase and diffys tho, yessir, anytime. The black fipg for oil is its own beastie

Nice write up.

Is that a bubble top? Sweet car.

I have a 70 Chevelle "Toyota work bench model":D

Yes. bubble top. My friend is restoring for a customer. I'm more a ford guy. Here's my 63 Galaxie and 70 Torino GT

I started out a Ford guy then learned to like em all. I restored muscle cars before the powder coating business/before Bowfin Cruisers. Nice cars. Likin' the lightweight hood on the 63. Is there a 427 lurking under there?

427 is in the torino. CORRECTION: 429 N code in the Torino. No 427. Galaxie has a 390.

Dropped off the flywheel today at NAPA...quoted me $50.00. I need to drill and tap my fill plug on the t-case before I put back on. Time-sert is $227.00 at Amazon. Wayyyyyyyyyyyy to much for me. I'll just drill the hole out and tap and put a pipe plug in it and call it a day.

Here's my work stand...ie the 4x6's cribbing.
