Howdy everyone 🤠
Since owning my LX470, it’s been a great truck, but for the last 3–4 months I’ve had a clunking noise coming from the rear driver-side that I cannot diagnose and it’s driving me insane.

Here’s a link to the noise:

Video Link

When the noise happens
  • Going over bumps
  • Shutting a door hard
  • Occasionally when driving slow over uneven surfaces

It sounds like a single sqeak/scrape from the driver-side rear.

Things I’ve already replaced / checked

Trying to rule things out, I’ve replaced quite a bit already:

Brakes
  • New brake pads
  • New rotors
  • Cleaned and serviced calipers

Parking brake
  • Old e-brake was seized (Seattle rust life)
  • Replaced all e-brake hardware
Suspension
  • Replaced rear suspension with Ironman setup (previous owner had cheap shocks)
Sway bar
  • Replaced rear sway bar end links
Other checks
  • Jacked the vehicle up
  • Checked wheel bearings for play — none
  • No obvious loose components

Additional info
  • Noise seems very localized to the rear driver-side
  • Happens even when the truck isn’t moving much (like slamming a door)
  • Makes me think it’s something loose rather than drivetrain related
My question

Before I start replacing every bushing in the rear suspension, has anyone experienced something similar on an LX470 / LC100

Any ideas or things I should check next would be greatly appreciated

The fact that you mentioned this happens when closing the door also makes me think it is something loose. Have you sat in the car while somebody slams the door or have you laid under the car when someone slams the door? Have you checked that your Jack and tool kit are secure in the side panel, and your spare is tight on the frame?

I haven’t done that yet, i will give it a shot. My Jack is tight. I it wasn’t before, but i took the rear apart when i re-foamed the speakers. I was just reading another fourm. The spare tire though could definitely be a culprit. I am going to order the tools (previous owner didn’t include them) make sure its tight. But best option is to get under and have someone close the doors. Never thought of that tbh. Ill give it a shot and update the thread if I find anything. Thank you very much for your time!

If it is the spare tire, I’ve been there once. When I put a spare tire on one time, I didn’t hang it correctly with the post all the way through the lug hole so it didn’t fully seat and made a turn one day weeks later and the tire fell out of the bottom of the car, and luckily, I was on a side street, but funny enough it was in front of a police station and one of the guys walks out and was like is that your tire and he couldn’t understand what was going on… fun times, be safe

Update:

Thanks to everyone who commented and gave suggestions.

I finally got the spare tire tool and completely removed the spare tire and spare tire lift (4 x 12mm bolts) Took the truck for a drive and for the first ~15 minutes the noise was completely gone, which made me think the spare might have been the issue. Unfortunately after that the noise came back again.

Next things I’m going to check:
  • Make sure the jack and tools aren’t loose
  • Have my brother slam doors / rock the truck while I’m underneath to try to pinpoint the source
If I find the cause I’ll update the thread so it helps the next person chasing this noise.

If anyone has other ideas of things to check in the rear area, I’d really appreciate it.

Final Update Maybey this helps someone out. Pervious owner took out the ACH suspension did a half ass job. All the components are still attached. Long story short i was able to replicate the node by jumping in the back, then had my brother do it. I then with a large light bar looked for the noise then anyone the sub frame i saw there was a black metal looking thing. I removed it had my brother jump again and the noise was gone.

TLDR: I’m 99.9% sure the old ACH was the metal scarring noise driving me nuts i pulled it down and plan to remove everything the right way. Thanks again for all the suggestions

I can confirm that this was the sound I was hearing. The old ACH pump lines were simply shoved up, scraping the top of my rear body, every time I hit a bump. I looked multiple times underneath the car, but I never specifically looked for them. It’s a pain in the ass (most people just cut them), but with an angled 12mm wrench right next to the rear tire, you can wrench them out, pull them away from the wiring harness, and you’re good. If anyone has a squeak when going slow, and you’ve tried everything else (parking brake, suspension, bushings, etc.), check your ACH components and make sure they’ve been removed or cut.
