So for anyone that hadn't been following the conversations over HERE, several of us have been talking about setting up a trip around the Sierra Buttes and Gold Lake area sometime in either late spring or early summer.
The general idea for this trip is to set something up where we can get as many 'Mud members as possible out on the trails! It will pretty much be a big camping trip with no set events, just show up, do whatever it is you like to do in the mountains, and have a good time!
If your worried that your truck isn't capable enough you can relax, you Toyota will do just fine. My truck is lifted, but has no lockers, and until this year, I never had sliders, winch, etc. Stock vehicles will be able to make it to the campsites fine; if you've never been offroading before this is a great place to start. (the trail to the 4x4 camp was the second trail I ever drove, [first was the trail to Upper Sardine Lake just down the road], and that was just my brother and I in the car)
(I ran into 'Mud member T-bones 60 a couple years ago herding a stock Honda Ridgeline to the Gold Lake OHV campground...)
Here's a dashcam video I found on YouTube of a Heep moving pretty fast on the trail. (I drive it nice and slow.) CAUTION: If you want to keep the trail a surprise until you get there, dont watch this video!
@matttaylor1976 has offered to let us use his place near Nevada City as a meeting point for those of us coming up on HWY 49. If anyone is interested in doing this, it would be cool to have that group, (and anyone else we can meet up with by the time we reach Sierra City), drive the dirt road from Sierra City to the Sierra Buttes Lookout Tower on our way into the Gold Lake 4x4 Campground.
...............................................
If you have never been to the area before, there are several ways to get there: (if you see a mistake anywhere in here let me know)
The way I usually go is up Hwy 49, passing through Downieville and Sierra City on the way up to Bassetts Station where you can turn onto the Gold Lake Hwy which takes you into the Lakes Basin Recreational Area.
You can also get there by taking Hwy 70 up through the Feather River canyon. Stay on 70 where it splits off to Hwy 89 towards Lake Almanor and you will eventually get to the town of Quincy (KWalkerM's town). Continue along 70 until it splits off to Hwy 89 again towards Graeagle, at the opposite end of Graeagle turn right onto the Gold Lake Hwy.
If your coming from the Tahoe area, follow Hwy 89 north toward Sierraville, then turn left onto Hwy 49. Continue on Hwy 49 when it splits off to Hwy 89 just past Sattley; follow Hwy 49 until you reach Bassetts Station, then turn right onto the Gold Lake Highway.

So, unfortunately, I will have to pass on this trip (was waiting for months on this). A cousin of mine (21yrs old and saw him since he was a baby) just passed away. I will have to be home for the services and hate to leave my uncle with this great loss. He (my cousin) is his eldest son.
The iPods i've mentioned are still for everyone in this group. If someone from San Jose is attending, I can drop off the goodies (iPods) to you (next week) or mail them to you or maybe mail them to KWalkerM (if you're OK with that) or anyone that is willing to take charge. I will ship them via Priority so you'll get them in two days. I live in the Peninsula area...
Let me know guys...

Ah, extra horny and swollen breasts. Good times. .
about time TYM!!!Mr. Machinist I am GOING!![]()
I am, but dont know how to do jack, so I will learn from revoked like the rest!Any HAMs going to be on this trip? I just got my license and picked up a handheld radio but I'm a bit foggy on how to use it with repeaters and all. The class is totally worthless. I'd appreciate it if someone wouldn't mind giving me a couple pointers. Will have beer.![]()
I have the same model. again, just a novice though.Yes Sir, and I can't wait!
I have the UV-5R. No license yet, but I will be bringing it to get some tips in person from somebody...
Yes please!!I'll bring the laptop and cord and get you all hooked up.
To Everyone: hypothetically, if "someone" were to have beer there, kept cold and poured from a draft, what would be the group's consensus on the most popular flavor?? pilsner, amber, pale, specific brand? cups provided if needed, free refills, small donation if possible.
Well if "somebody" wants to know, I'm an ale guy. Any kind of ale is good. Pilsners? What's next, you bringing Milwaukee's Best and Natural Light? And we never did open that Black Label from Signal Peak!
wow!! missed page 23 somehow!!

Not too picky, none of that hoegaarden crap though
So @matttaylor1976 We (myself @MKtaco98 and @MaK92 4RnR ) we're thinking of being up at your pad around 10am. And anyone else that's headed up can all ride out with us. Giving a better chance of getting spots together
Darrell - Hope the rig gets fixed and on the trail!

Now I need to get Friday off!! So I'm a lame operator, and can pretty much only dial in frequencies and run simplex 99% of the time. How would I setup murs ch3, or could we just run the NorCal channel 146.460 or .400?? PM instructions if need be. I have the cheapo baofung 5vr thingy..Sounds good guys, I'm loading up everything but the cooler Thursday night. We'll be ready to roll at 10ish, i figure we'll give the stragglers a few to make it up, and me time to coffee it up. i'll key up the ham on murs channel 3 for anyone that gets within range of NC / GV around 10am.
