First of all, let me start by saying sorry mfor the lack of pics. Apparently I picked up a 24 hour flu virus somewhere and spent all last night trying not to die.

saaw sweeet!

hey you dont by chance have your receipt from the perches do you? i stopped by dodge house today and gave em the part number and all it said was something like MTG kit... no pictures available, so i had him look up a 89 3/4 ton and it showed to have the spicer / dana 60 rear and it didnt show that you could buy the perches separately... he ordered in the part number i gave him anyhow tho so i will see what it is around 5:30 when they show up i was just curious if your receipt said the same thing as his computer showed.

This is what my receipt said: MTG. KIT SEATS. Sounds like you had the right thing.

that diff armor is bad-ass!

I like the diff cover armor......but rebar is very soft metal..... It may just fold into the cover if hit. Solid bar may be stronger...but love the idea for protection.

Thanks! I know rebar is soft but I welded it straight to the cover with the idea that it will just distribute the forces around the cover rather than have a hole punched through. I think it will be better than nothing, at least.

Ok, yesterday I didn't get too much done but I got the rest of my parts ordered:

Axle Ball Gusset Kit | Marlin Crawler, Inc. - I was also going to order their knuckle rebuild kit but they were out of stock. They referred me to several places, though. Great guys and very helpful.

U bolt, 5/8" x 3 1/4" x 10" [UB325] - $10.63 - The guys at ruffstuff were great. When I first called they were with a customer and called ME back within the next 20 minutes.

And a knuckle rebuild kit from George (Orangefj45) on IH8MUD.

I pulled the pitman arm off which was actually pretty easy. I had been spraying it with PB blaster for about a week. I just put the puller on it as tight as it would go and then just went about my other tasks coming back to whack it with a mini sledge every now and then. Eventually it just popped off.

I also finished up my diff armor and got the passenger side perch wlded up.

Pics to come.

man I need to get off my Ass and start buildin my front axle

Well, I probably wouldn't be building mine but for the fact that it was out anyways.

Here is the only picture I had of the passenger side perch. It is just lightly tacked together but I think/pray it will work great. Those are grade 8, 9/16 bolts I believe.

looks good, should work just fine i would presume.

forgot to mention here that the part number was correct and the guy i was workin with is just a little slow... anyhow i made a comment in my ROTW thread bout em.

Nice. I'm headed out of town for New Years so hopefully when I get back I can get started on rebuilding my front axle. Happy New Years...... almost.:cheers::beer:

I haven't been able to work on the front end for the last week due to lack of parts/time, but today the last piece I was waiting on finally showed up and I managed to get my front housing all finished up and ready to be sandblasted, or maybe just painted... I haven't decided.

Here is a shot of the driver and passenger side knuckle gussets:

And here is a picture of the diff protection and 62 style housing gusset:

sand blast? more effort than i was willing for a trail rig.

lookin good!

After a good night's sleep I decided to just sneak that baby into the carwash and blow everything off/out. The axle tubes themselves are filled with mud and old chunky grease. I just want to get off as much loose stuff as I can before I paint it.

lookin good!

Thanks!

can't wait to see the finished project....I never did find the spring perches in my crawlspace...I think the perch monster ate them...

hope all is well - it's looking good!

Yeah, me neither. Also, I am pretty sure that 2 of the 4.11s you sold me are fine spline from a 62. You sneaky little...

I just found this on page 6, more pictures and updates!!

MARTACK

I just found this on page 6, more pictures and updates!!

ALL RIIIIGGGHHT!

After reading cruisinfj60s writeup on doing a martack I decided I wanted to do it too.

A Martack is when you place tackwelds on the carrier end axle splines to keep the axleshaft from traveling too far into the differential. Most people do the Martack to aid in the replacement of a birfield joint. A Martack allows you to do away with the snap ring inside the birfield on the end of the inner axleshaft. This makes it possible to remove the entire knuckle/spindle/hub assembly as one piece rather than pull everything apart separately. Another reason to do the Martack is to keep the axle from going too far into the differential, which causes the oil seal to drop off the machined sealing surface on the inner shaft.**see pictures**

Here are a couple resources that I used to help me:

Toyota Front Axle Rebuild

aaannndd Cruisin's thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/347574-outter-c-clip-birf-inside-hub.html

What I did was to first put a tiny coating of grease on the splines of the inner shaft and slide it into the carrier. This lubes up the carrier and will help to keep the tape from ripping off the end of the shaft. Next clean the splines of the shaft really well and wrap ONE layer of tape around them. Make sure it sticks well!!

Slide the taped axle shaft back into the carrier until the seal is riding near the outside of the machined sealing surface.

This is too far. As you can see below, the shaft has gone too far into the carrier and the sealing surface has passed the lip of the seal which will allow gear oil to pass through into your birfield grease.

Here is where you want the seal to ride. The gap between seal and surface is much smaller and once the weight of the shaft is no longer resting on the seal the gap should be nonexistent.

Pull the taped shaft back out and check to see that you have visible marks. Measure the distance from the end of the splines to where the grooves stop, remove the tape, remeasure and mark the distance........

And place your tack welds. Sorry for the blur, but you get the idea.

After the Martack it was basically a knuckle rebuild so I didn't really take any pictures. Here it is almost back together:

All the way together. This thing is going to be taaalll. And yes, those tires are 235's. AAANnnnnd yes, I know I have a messy workspace.

I got the rear axle pulled out and disassembled. The drivers side carrier bearing... or was it passenger side... I don't remember. But one of the carrier bearings practically crumbled in my hand and I could grab the ring gear/ carrier combo and shake it around in the third member. Good thing I have nice new (to me) 4.11s going in.

Thats all for today and yesterday. Hopefully I can have it back on all fours by tomorrow. Then I am waiting on brake lines and I should be good to go..... I hope.

lookin good man.

glad i could help!

Martack = next mod I do to my rig.

Excellent work! The front axle looks well protected with the metal you added to it.

Thanks. I'm getting so excited to see the finished product. I have been working 10 hours days only on the landcruiser (perks of graduating and still being on "christmas break") I am about to tack the rear perches on then try to wrap things up. I'll post up some pictures tonight.
