Got her back on the ground!!!!!!!! and damn she looks good. My frame measurements with 27 inch tires:

Driver Front: 24.5"
Passenger Front: 25.25"
Driver Rear: 27.5"
Passenger Rear: 28"

Now for some pictures.

I pulled the rear axle apart down to the pinion because the third member that was in there was toast. One of the carrier bearings fell apart in my hands and both side adjusting nuts were chewed up. Here is a picture of setting the perches and getting the pinion angle figured out.

I set the pinion angle pointed directly at the Tcase then used the angle finder to point it down 2 degrees.

Pulled the axle back out, burned the perches in solid, and installed the new third member.

I slid the axle back under, after grinding off the old spring plates, and bolted it back in..... Now the moment we (but mostly just me) have all been waiting for....!!!!!!

That's all I've got for now. Until I get longer brake lines, which should hopefully be Monday, she will sit right there. Don't want to risk having to chase her down the driveway.... again ;)

I do have one question that I couldn't find in the FSM or after a quick search here. What are you guys (and girls) torquing the third member to housing bolts to?

#3(of 5) setting on the impact.

lookin good ... needs bigger tires :p

bad ass snap on 3/8 impact.

I can do that. Do you have any idea what torque that might be? I am a little wary of tightening things with impacts.

I don't know maaaaan. The 27's really help with the low end gearing and any bigger and I won't be able to use the garage!!

I'm thinking 35s. I still have all stock shafts and with 4.11s I think they will be a good match. Unless an unbelievably cheap set of 36s or 37s falls into my lap... Heck, I'd even throw in my old 27s to sweeten the pot.

Now I just have shocks, brakes, and driveshafts to do....

you wont over torque the third member studs, just dont hammer forever on them and it will be fine. i have used my 1/2" top of the line snap on impact on mine before with no issues. i gurantee they are prolly close to 100 somethign ft lbs or torque, just get em on there nice and tight.

on the drive lines i didnt change either one of mine and it being an 84 has a CV up front from the factory, i think the rear is actually about perfect length, and the front may be a hair to short but at full droop it was fine (course with standard shackle set up axle will go toward t case) and ride height it still has about an inch or 2 of splines engaged then when i flexed it out i didnt have any issues...

ima run em till i see or have an issue with them or until i move my axles for more wheel base. :meh:

I guess I'll just use an impact then. You are right about the driveshafts. I was just going based on what other people had said. I need to run the rear one and see if I am getting any vibes. If not then I'll stick with the ones I have, but if I am I am going to get them redone. Now I just need to find some tires.

sweet man, that things huge now.... cant wait to see it wit some big rubber....

Looking great! Almost there now:D

Thanks. I have a list of about ten things I have left to do. That will take time AND money.

Yeah me neither. I have been diligently searching craigslist to no avail. I am in no hurry, though... that's when you find the best deals.

me too.

But i keep finding things like this where the person saiys they still have 6/32nds left but are obviously at and below the wear bar all the way across the tire... just cause the side lugs have some rubber does not mean they are good... oh and he wants 300.... they arnt worth 10...

what i have is 4 39.5X14X16.5 super swamper tsl tires. still 6/32nds of tread, will pass an inspection and good for wheeling for a bit.

LOL-I shop Craig's too. Tread life translator:

'Brand New with nubs"........I mounted them and popped 2 sidewalls. Crappy repair but holds air. I HOPE YOU DON'T NOTICE

'95-100% Tread';.....Tires manufactured during the Nixon administration and then sat outside unused since then *OR* I want nearly full retail price with mounting. Tough luck on the warranty.

'75% Tread'....Decent tires several years old. I got tired of them. Maybe 50% in reality. Often the tires to buy on Craigs.

"50% Tread"....These were getting too sketchy to run on my monster truck but they will be fine on yours.

"30% Tread"....Some low life wants new tires and is hoping he can find someone dumb enough to give him several hundred dollars vs the disposal fee he will have to pay at the tire store. Wear bars definitely showing.

"Well worn"....An honest seller. Means they are totally worn out and have belts showing and not worth even going to see. Likely still hold air and are running under a minitruck.

The only place I have had good luck buying used tires is here on IH8MUD.

NOOOOOOO kiddding. I bought some 35s a while back for a cherokee. The pics he sent me showed "decent" tread (above the wear bars), but... I am a moron. I took a quick glance at them, gave him a hundred bucks, and took them home. That is when I noticed giant chunks out of the bead and the top ply of rubber peeled off in a 2x2 square on one of the tires.

I wish someone on mud that was within 200 miles of me had some tires I wanted. The only tires I find are out west where everyone gets to have fun on the rocks...

When the wear bars are worn you are dealing with some serious irony and should proceed with caution. On a happier note, I posted a link to a sick deal in your thread in the Tires and Wheels section. It's in Colorado, though....

As for the springover, I am waiting on brake lines to come in and then I should be able to take the 'ole girl for a test drive.

I torque them to spec, 35 ft/lbs.

oh yea i know all to much about tires, worked in / managed many many NTB's for a number of years.

i got lucky on my brake lines, when i originally lifted my truck i had the rear brake line made 8 inches longer than stock and had them do 2 of them. so even with my lift springs on there they were plenty long in SOA configuration.
