split case 4:1 gear sets!!!!!

that's a loaded question. one of the pitfalls of the split case is that it needs to be assembled "onto" the trans or adapter it's going behind. without having either here at the shop, i can't really "build" the entire case but could do most of it.

Allow me to rephrase the question.
What would the fee be to do all the machining and dry fitting the gears if the split case was sent to you?

aa has a jig and offers the machining services. i have a bridgeport mill as well but have not set up a jig. since aa already has it there's no need for me to do the job as well.
so if you need your case halves machined, the best thing to do is to send them to aa.
if you want a complete case built, then i'll be happy to do so. please pm me if you're interested.
thanks a lot.

So with this new 4:1 gear set, would you lose a percentage of the overdrive in 5th gear in an h55 like you do with Marks 3:1 gear set ?

If you have 1to1 hi range you dont lose anything.

I have the Marks gears 3.05 to 1 low range and 1.08 to 1 hi

This really helps if you are running much larger tires.

If you have 1to1 hi range you dont lose anything..

actually I'm not sure why the new 4:1 did not follow the same path .. offering a bit deeper hi reduction ..

It would be nice if there was a choice 1to 1 or have the hi reduction.

According to their web site:

"Note: This Gear set will also alter your high range ratio. The high range ratio will now result in a 10% underdrive."

A count of the teeth comparing input and high output gears would confirm one way or the other :meh:

that's awesome .. ! I will put 'em in my list .. !

Any plan to offer this for a roller gear split case FJ62 style?

The website says it covers the 62 year model. "1980-1990 with the 38mm cluster pin."

G'day guys,

We're in the middle of the install now. We have a 1985 BJ73 (vacuum 4wd engagement) it had the 34mm idler shafter and the 19 spline shaft. We had the case machined to take the bigger gears and also had it machined to take the bigger 38mm shaft. We have come across something we're not to sure about.

You can see the step in the gears. Has anybody else come across this or is it something to do with the case we are using? Is it a problem?

Cheers,
Rob

By "step" do you mean the mis-alignment of the low speed output gear and the idler?

I'm guessing the brass thrust bearing doesn't have it's little protrusion in the slot it's supposed to go in.

This sounds really bad when you have a dirty mind.... :) I hope it makes sense what i'm trying to explain here.

For those that have been running these gears, can you give some feedback on how you like or dislike them? Crawling experiences, noise levels, install tips?

noise is barley more than a stock gear set and much better than the mark's gears. i have built quite a few cases with the 4:1 gear sets now and no complaints.
the install is about the same amount of labor and difficulty level as rebuilding a t-case.

fwiw, i have been working with a local manufacturer for a little while now. they do all my water-jet cutting and they also have a fairly new 4-axis mill. i had them machine out a split case for the low range gear set and it turned out beautiful. they're going to charge us $175 per case but would like to do 2-3 of them at a time.
so if anybody needs a case machined, then you're welcome to send me the CLEANED case half ( rear only ) and i'll get it machined. i have a few spare case halves here. might get a few done ( while keeping the matching half for the machined counterpart ) to offer as an exchange-type unit. i guess we'll have to see how much interest there is.

Georg, is material added to the outside of the case for the halves being machined as I hear it gets pretty thin on some spots?
