Thanks for the replies guys!

Did the 1981-1983 run 3.70 diff ratio?

Yes.

......And did the 81-83 split case have the hand brake on the transfer output or the rear wheels?

Split case has no place to mount a hand brake, so yes, they moved it to the rear axle/wheels, same as the FJ60.

Thanks for the info!.......The 47 series here in Oz run the split case with the hand brake drum on the transfer output, this set up was used with 4 speeds coupled to 4.11:1 diffs.

My 1979 FJ40 is non-USA. It has 3:70 gears but it also has drum brakes which uses FJ45 front drums, larger and wider. But I still need to figure out something to correct the speedo which is close to 20% off, going slower than indicated and I'm running 21575R-15 tires which spec out close to the original diameter 7.60-15.

Update?

Bumping this thread to see if someone can help me figure out the gears I need for my US market 77 with 3.73 diffs and 31x10.50 tires. Speedo shows 50 mph but gps registers 58-59. I'd really like to get the speedometer indicating right.

Not yet Poser. The Beast went into the shop mid-July '17 for steering, brakes, pinion seals and a valve job. Once the head came off the mechanic didn't like some scuffing on the walls. Whole new motor rebuild, in the shop for four months and they didn't touch my steering, brakes or pinion seals. Disappointed. I drove it for a month and then took it up North for body work Dec. 20, maybe one more month. But then I'm still facing the aforementioned issues. The original Toyota Speedo says 1,025 rpms for 60 mph. The Auto Meter gauge I have says 1,000 rpm for 60 mph.

You can go to a speedo shop and have them make an adapter for you. It will connect between the speedo cable and transfer case. Most shops will ask you to drive your vehicle at 50mph, 60mph, 70mph, etc... and compare your speedo speed to a GPS speed. They will calculate the percentage and make you a adapter. Here in California, it runs about $100 give or take a few bucks.

I need some help figuring this out. I pulled the driven gears from a 82 FJ40 with a H42 US market 3.73 diffs and a 83 BJ42 with a H55F Australian market with 4.11diffs. Both are 6X16. When I search Amayama I come up with the same drive gear part number (33481-60060) for both markets. I search the US market for the 76-80 and shows the part changed 1/79 as would expect going from 4.11 to 3.73. Our FJ62 shows 33481-60050 which I would expect would be correct for split transfer cases in other markets with 4.11. But that is not the case on Amayama's site. I'm trying to local the correct 3.73 drive and driven gears and want to be sure I get it right.

Thanks

i have one of these ratio converters for my fj62 with an h55 in it. they’ll build it out of a speedometer cabble and then you just hook up a new cable. they have quite fine tuned ratios that they can fix. there are some other out there that are metal cases. mine is plastic which i don’t love but it all works for about $150 including a new cable

I am trying to locate the correct 3.73 drive and driven gears for a few members in Australia who are unable to get these because the 3.73 gears was not offered there. Complain about Toyota US but it seems to be even worse in Australia. Would require a special trip to a dealer to hopefully find the part numbers for thier market. Quick call yesterday was able to get the part number here. Before mailing part half way around the world want to be 100% of the right parts.

I have the opposite situation with my '70 FJ40. My speedometer reads 15% higher than GPS reading! I'm running 30" tires and the driven gear is 6 X 17. Does this mean I need to go to a 6 X 16 driven gear? I'm not sure that's enough to compensate.

Hey Cavman, I have the same issue with my '70 3 speed. Did you find a solution?

On the recommendation of Hojack I just installed a Speedhut GPS speedometer in my 60. Install is clean and fairly simple and it is accurate with any tire size.

Nope. I'm about to buy a dakota digital and gps. That should solve all my gauge issues.

FWIW: Being that I run 32" tires and upgraded my 3rd members to 3.70 gears, my speedometer was obviously off. So after installing the new 3rds, I did a few test runs using GPS speeds vs the OEM speedometer. I took the GPS speed and divided by the OEM speedometer, and that was my ratio for a correction device. For my rig, I ran the speedo up to 40 and the GPS was a 48. The I ran the speedo up to 50 and the GPS was at 60. Thus my calculation were 48/40 and 60/50 which equaled 1.20 as my correction ratio.

I did a lot of research on MUD and found a company out of Sacramento, CA - Commercial Speedometer. Gave them a call, talked to Chuck, and he built me a Correction Syncro box and shipped it out that night. Great guy to work with!!! It arrived 2 days later, and for $85 bucks shipped from west coast to east coast, BARGAIN!.....And let me just say, it is nice knowing that when I'm looking at my Gauge Cluster, my speedometer is actually a useful device now.

Funny. I can’t believe anyone would spend a dime on this issue.

It is funny how all mine are different.

One thing you will want to do before actually spending time and money if you so choose is check the actual size of your tires.

There is not a single 33” tire I’ve ever seen that is actually 33” once mounted.

For example. On the stock 15 x 5.5” wheel my Maxxis Razr measure 32.5” at 32#

My KM2’s. Same wheel. Same truck. 31.5”

My KM3’s. Same wheel. Same truck 30.5”

Yep. 2” difference and all 33x10.50-15

That is a good, easy fix. Going to try it (my correction will be .XX as my indicated speed is higher than my actual speed)

As for my trucks ....

The Pig with H55/split case and 4.11 with the 32.5” Maxxis Razr - dead on balls accurate

The 60 with stock drivetrain with 255/85-16 also 32.5” tall is 10 mph slow at 60 indicated

The 40 with a FJ60 split case and 4.11 with 235/85-16 at 31” tall is dead on balls accurate

The 1967 45 with all stock and 750-16’s which are 30.5” tall is dead on accurate too.
