Rick-

What head unit did you go with?

Rockwood/Fosgate RFK 9400. It's a few years old so it's most likely been replaced. I've been having fun with the MP3 feature. I'd recommend that to anyone. The disks have folders titled by the artist which contain the songs. I can browse the directories and then the song selections. I've got a nice CD ripper as well, EaseCD ripper is the name of the program. It utilizes an on line data base to identify the disk read through the computer drive and then fills in the artist, album title and song titles automatically. Very convienent.

land,
Thanks. I just received another deck, 1st one was defective. Hopefully it'll work ok. I was planning on replacing the speakers soon anyway so I don't think it'll be too much of an issue.

DRTD,
The deck I'm using is a Clarion which also is setup to accept the OEM mounting brackets. I would hazard a guess that any decent deck would be the same.

Why unplug the front dash speakers? What size are these anyway? (approx. diameter & depth?)
[/quote]

They are a 2" mid/tweeter that are crap and upset the balance of the front speakers by shifting the sound toward the bright end of the scale.

BTW, one reason the Eclipses work so well is they are very efficient, about 3-6db/watt more efficient than the competition. Other speakers will require an outboard amp to avoid clipping the stock amp.

What's your opinion on the speakers in the cargo compartment? The "woofer", and I use the term loosely, is anemic at best and the tweeters in the headliner sound pathetic. Have any suggestions for upgrades in these areas, in the same budget ballpark as the Eclipses? Would you make an enclousure for the new sub? Thanks, Greg.

:o WHAT !!! I have a subwoofer in the back! I have read this whole post and then looked in my new FSM and can't believe I have such crumy sound coming from NINE speakers?!?!?! :-[ > when i use the fader there is almost no sound coming from the back of the vehicle and definietly NO bass ? I have a 97. What is up and what should I lok to fix? Wondering if the sub is blown, the amp is blown, or if something in the headunit is busted - it's a CD, tape combo that I assme is factory installed. Only problem I knew of before was th antenna doesn't go up or down( no motor sound either)
thanks
Jay

I'll tag onto this thread to give my speaker upgrade. Just completed it Monday, had been doing it piece by piece of the that last few weeks. I am no audiophile, but certainly enjoy some good tunes now and then, so this set works well for me.

Front door speakers - 5.25in Alpines (SPS-120A) with built in tweaters (sound great). Only needed a 1/2 spacer due to slightly deeper mounting depth.

Rear door speakers - 4.0in Pyramids (not that great but better than stock). Had to do some cutting on the plastic holders and speaker basket for the speakers to fit in hole.

Cargo area speaker - 3.5in Sonys (sound okay). Has to bend the metal mounting brackets a little to accomodate larger magnet.

Sub - Rockford/Fosgate 8" (does a good job, would be better if in full box). Mounted it with 3/4" fiberboard utilizing the stock hanger.

All were installed so that factory covers are used. Again, this may sound like a half a** set up to some of you that are into sound systems, but it is leaps and bounds better than stock and only cost about $100 plus my time.

Byron,

Sounds simililar to what I'm looking for. What did you do for an amp for your sub?

sea-

I just used the stock amp for now. I'll look into upgrading that when my head unit needs replacing some day.

Garbage. Fortunately they are set at such a low level I simply ignore them and my Dog doesn't seem to complain about them. Given the time I would throw out the stock woofer and copy what Brentbba did.

Brent, does your stock trim fit over the woofer enclosure? Have you considered building and selling the enclosure you made? Looks like you have good fab skills.

Cary

Stock trim does fit over the enclosure. You can't tell I have a custom sub. As I mentioned in the write-up of the entire system above, the new sub is actually directed out of the vent on the stock trim and there is a piece of black felt covering the back of the stock sub cover.

I didn't do any of this. Reuss Systems in Orange, CA did it all. They take great pride in their work as most of it is on brand new Porsches, MBZ, etc. He took as much care of my beast as his high end customers.

So Brent, what did he install for a sub and amp? I'm probably in a different budget bracket than your system, so I'm thiking 8" sub with 200-300 watt amp. Am I close? Thanks, Greg.

I got tired looking for a good deal on the Eclipse speakers, so I went with Alpines:

Front doors: Alpine SPS-130A, 5 1/4", 92dB, 30w RMS, $55/pair
Rear doors : Alpine SPS-100A, 4", 92dB, 25w RMS, $49/pair

Free shipping on orders over $100, no tax (outside calif), www.onlinecarstereo.com

I listened to the Alpines at Circuit City and they are a good quality speaker. The mounting depth on both is a hair bigger than the Eclipses, but both are under 2". I'll report back after I install them myself.

Don't know the brand of sub or amp back there. Just gives me the bass I wanted that the stock system didn't have. Sorry.

CruiserLegolas,

Good luck with the installation. I bought a pair of Polks with a 2 inch mounting depth and after looking at them and the hole they had to fit into, I returned them. I ended up going with one of the cheaper pioneers (Model: TS-G1640R - $50). These are 6 1/2 inch speakers with a 1 5/8 inch mounting depth. They were still quite tight, but I was able to make them fit (and still use the factory grills) with some small rubber spacers. I took pictures along the way and will post them when I get a chance. I haven't replaced the rear speaker yet, but I'm hoping the matching 4 inch pioneers will work.

Ben,

Thanks for the heads up. How big were the spacers that you used? DRTDuck reported earlier using 1/2" spacers to fit the Alpine speakers into the hole and still use the factory covers.

They were slightly less than a half inch, and I compressed them down to a quarter inch. They are actually little rubber grommets that fit in the holes on ceiling fan blades where you attach them to the fan.

Let me know how the installation goes, especially in the rear doors. I may try the same 6 1/2 inch Pioneers in the rear.

I picked up my Eclipse 82541 5 1/4" speakers yesterday and just finished the install. I followed Tucker's instructions, made 1/4" spacers out of plastic toilet supply line that I had laying around and some longer screws, trimmed the door panel per his instructions and viola! We got sound! Good sound at the embarassingly low price of $21.50 on ebay. I'm no audiophile but even my ears can appreciate the difference.

I finally got my Alpine SPS-130A ($55/pair) speakers and I installed them this morning. It took me about 2 hours to do the whole job. The speakers sound much better than the originals.

To take off the door panel, you must remove 4 screws and a few snap-on clips. Two screws are hidden underneath the arm rest cover which pops off (use a flat screw driver to pop off the cover). The third screw is behind the door handle. The fourth screw is on the door latch. Once the screws are off, you use a flat screw driver to pop off the clips along the sides and bottom of the door panel. Once all the clips are popped off, then you can slide the door panel off (there are wires connected to the door panel, so be careful).

I couldn't find anything in my garage to use as spacers, so I ended up using several synthetic wine corks. I cut the corks in thirds and drilled a hole off center. I drove the screws through the corks and installed my speakers.

The original speakers are weird. The cones are concave up instead of concave down. This design allows the speakers to be shallow (about 1 inch top mount). This is why aftermarket speaker only fit by using spacers. The engineers at Toyota must have said "who needs speakers for off-roading?" and outsourced a custom speaker design to some 3rd party shop. Really weird speakers in the front.

Anyway, replacing the front speakers greatly improves your sound. I still need to install the back door ones, but I'll do those next.

Some folks have had trouble finding the Eclipse SE8243 that fit the rear door. They are still out there, I found a set on e-bay a couple weeks ago for a fair price, IIRC $40 or so. The fit and sound nice.
