Spare fuel bladders in the doors?

nukegoat, My suggestion, if you're seriously considering making this mod I'd call your life, and car insurance agent first, to find out if they think you'll still be covered. I'm willing to bet that their answer will be a resounding NO, not only no, but HELL NO!

I don't want to leave this state. No reason to. We have the most enlightened people, the best schools, Yosemite, the Mojave desert, and Disneyland. Plus we are more productive than other Americans, since our GDP per capita is higher. Housing is expensive because everyone wants to be here but not everyone is useful enough to society to afford it.

Oh no you didn’t:flipoff2:

I’ve been a refinery operator, so I have sort of a demented idea of danger.

I’ve driven into propane clouds that bogged the motor/lack of oxygen, and I’ve been sent to hunt the “walking wounded” & look for casualties not yet found. I’ve seen up close what a burned body contorts to as the muscles contract.

I’m less scared by your idea than the way some people cook inside their tailhatches.

IMO - If I had a chub to make this happen, I’d use the quarterpanels & say drill a new fuel hatch in the D-pillar over the existing one - maybe use a subtank filler / flap mech if you wanted to use both quarterpanels.

Total honesty - I read the 1st page & skipped 2-here.
I’m sure plenty made the ‘exploding Pinto’ -joke.

I only saw where someone said quarterpanels as well on page one.

Let's get back to tech please...do you guys think 4 hoses to each door would be better than a manifold? I was at Lowes today to buy a refrigerator to take advantage of the new year's deals but saw some cheap PEX manifolds which would allow you to shut off each door for on-road filling up and only fill it up when you want to. I like the simplicity of the clear vinyl tubing to each bag for trail repairs.

I drew a picture to help you guys visualize my first idea:

I can visualize this easily enough. Curious why you don’t include the largest cavities in the tailgate and rear quarter panels? Also, I agree that the windows and regulators in the doors don’t pose much of an issue with flexible bags. Any concerns about tubing pinching closed when closing doors?

The tailgate swings down when you open it, so all the extra weight would be hard to deal with. I don't have much muscle mass so I already struggle to lift the tailgate myself.

I doubt your insurance company would be excited about all the rock sliders and stabby bumpers you put on your vehicle either.

Oops. Trolled.

I am glad we are getting back to facts.
There are many engineered motorized transports where the fuel is stored inside rather than outside of said “vehicle”. I have never seen a boat with an external fuel tank. They are inside the boat.
Having had many boats, internal tanks are aluminium (though we are seeing more modern materials used for tanks ) with proper venting fans because of fumes, plus the location of said tanks are placed in areas specifically designed for fuel tanks, yet despite modern engineering the biggest cause of boating accidents are explosions and fires .. Do not forget to advise your insurance company. Also there is a greater risk of injuring or killing individuals in an accident. How would you feel if you are the cause of someones death because of poor engineering. Why would you insist on building something that has the potential of being lethal.

So really - what is this?

I ask as my Dad got fed up with FEMA & flood isurance flood zone taxes, so he went so far as to get some 24 foam blocks (3’x4’x8’) -from a dock update at the Navy base, register the mobile home on riverfront lot as a nautical vessel, and was getting ready to drive pilings / put the utilities all on a flex loom - then FEMA came through & bought out everyone at massive profits.

So I’m used to ‘out of box’ thinking - and as someone mentioned, my jet sled has a 77gal fuel tank centered in the hull ~10” ahead of the LS3 motor, common airspace - all Coast Guard inspected, approved & insured.

All that isht said - this thread & your wheelwell fairing thread - are you just in an especially “concept driven” phase lately?

You sprinkle just enough serious proven tech along the stuff like ‘not enough muscle mass’ - what’s up?

Oh - and I’ve no clue the formulation of PEX pipe, but rodents love it like soybean insulated wires.

Google rodent damage to PEX - I’d stick to DOT -approved hose, or metal tube.

— That’s assuming you & Rogan aren’t hanging & sharing his stash, and that’s where this all is coming from.

Based on this post I can now understand what you mean by enlightened people.

Without the link, I’d never have believed it.
I thought about starting a big argument but some of these folks would take it seriously.

If you end up going the seat cushion route, do you think you can adapt a diesel fuel heater so you'd still have seat heater functionality? Although you might be better off using the second row for the typically lower passenger weight of juveniles.

OK, so this is starting to become a viable alternative. One big advantage of the seat cushion idea is that it sort of naturally "pumps" the gas back into the tank, eliminating the need for a siphoning system. It also works at all angles. In order for the seat not to collapse, though, you may have to pressurize the gas tank, but I think most 80s already do that

Are those ARB wheel skirts? I can't quite make out the logo.
