I have done a couple of them, love em! A few have done them without taking the windows out, but? I dont see how you can pull it tight enough and get them to stay for another 30 years without pulling the windows?

So you did have to pull the windshield? I was wondering if it was possible to bypass that process...

Anything is possible? But yes, to pull it factory tight (no ripples) the windshield and rear side windows need to be pulled and then the headliner attatched with the little clips to the window opening.

There was a thread a while back of someone talking about doing it nicely without pulling. I have a friend that owns a glass shop though so...?

Weeboo, had his headliner installed without removing any glass and it came out nice. I spoke to the company that did the install and my only concern is they drilled holes to screw down tack strips around all the glass areas and used something called a wire over (that may not be what its called, something like that) which folds over to cover the tack strip, but with no way to seal the back side of the screws this would be another site for rust to start. But it did come out nice.

I'd pull the windows and do it RIGHT!! The old adage, "You can do it right or you can do it twice!!"

Understood. My only concern is that my windshield weatherstrip is looking a little dry. I'm afraid if we pull it I may end up with leaks, or having to buy new weatherstrip, which looks like it would about double the cost of my headliner install!

Does anyone have a step-by-step 55 headliner install thread (that shows those little clips)? Search did not find this...

I feel a step by step Headliner thead coming on :D

The side windows come out pretty easy, lube em up good with some WD-40 and a small screwdriver then start in the Lower-Rear corner, push it out from the inside, then work it out evenly. Mine were in pretty poor shape but was still able to reuse. THE ONLY WAY TO REMOVE THE WINDSHIELD is to CUT IT OUT!!! OR YOU WILL BREAK IT! The new gasket is pretty cheap, and well worth it.

The little clip are the same ones as under the door seals, you can get them from JC Whitney as well. When you are putting the bows in the new headliner keep them in order, IIRC they vary a tiny bit. Would make more of a mess and more work but I put Dynamat Extreme in my entire roof after cleaning off the factory material and the difference is truely ASTOUNDING!

Wow, so you have to cut out the windshield - I did not know that. I thought the new gasket was like $400 at SloCruisers? Wait - I just checked their website and it is $52 - o-k, nevermind!

I can re-use my bows - correct?

So you just tore off the old and put in Dynamat? Is the difference in temp or in noise? Or both?

I got mine from Slo-Cruiser as well. I used to have another perfect windshield and didnt cut the gasket... as careful as one could be it popped :frown: my glass friend said with that curve it cant be avoided? The $50 is worth it?

Yes, the bows are just some steel rods bent up to fit the roof.

Ya, I just removed the old felt insulator/headliner and applied the Dynamat Extreme to EVERYTHING then another foil-backed carpet (?) pad from AutoZone and eventhough my 55s headliner is still out it is still WAY more quiet than the other 5 my friends have with factory liner. Mine sounds like your in a car... not a tin can with all the echos, can talk on the cell phone on the freeway wih swampers and a flowmaster :D It was around $300- but in my opinion worth it?

Any pics?

Any other materialthat would work well w/o costing $300?

Isn't the Dynamat awfully heavy? I'd rather have some lighter weight material up there than a heavy material both for handling and if it ever comes loose.....

Are you folks sure there are clips around the windows and not just glue? I'd think the clips would mess up the weatherstrip and keep it from sealing properly.

Usually I take tons of pics but, guess I had too many barly pops? I can take some pics of mine tomm. headliner still waiting to go in. I actually drove my soon to be other stock 55 on the freeway today- and even with swampers, mine still is better

I am sure there are other companys out there, lots have been covered here, but first to market works for me? The whole box of Dynamat Extreme was carried under my arm... maybe 15-20lbs.

I dont know how to express this but... it wont come off! This stuff sticks, and even though the little BS roller costs $20 its worth it? Although, before I install my headliner I am going to give a coat of POR-15 to aid in condensation/moisture RUST (big problem in 55s)

p.s. mine had clips?

headliner install thread

There is a 55 headliner thread on Birfield that was done by Evan and as of right now Birfield site is down. If anybody knows him maybe we could get him to post it on the Mud. Here's his rig complete with LX470 engine and drivetrain. He used these stick pins on the ceiling to secure the sound proof pad.

Pics would be great!

Clips at the windshield?

Are you going to POR15 the whole inside of roof?

Thanks, I'll chime in on the LCML to see if I can gain access to it somehow...

My build thread has some pics of the headliner going in. Definitely do it with the windows and rubber out. I helped an upholstery guy put mine in.

Hey TJ, did you ever do the headliner? I will need to do it on my 76 soon, maybe we can do a combined "headliner saturday" and take a lot of pics?

I have not...

Since I posted this I discovered that I need to pull windsheild and cargo windows and trim around door openings.

Windshield weatherstrip - available
Cargo window rubber - I have
Door opening trim - Looks like there are options listed in Weatherstrip Thread

From my perspective, once you pull windsheild, you should paint (esp when your roof looks like mine!)

Trying to figure out how to line up glass, paint and interior services at the same time/place!
