So now my 80 looks like a giant Oreo Cookie (bedliner/LOTS OF PIX!!)

WOW, all RTS buses... that's a pretty sweet contract! I really drove around today and i saw a few 100 series, your 80 series and two 60 series. Today was a good day, yours was the coolest without doubt!!!! The tutone bedliner and rear wheel bumper took all my attention... I didnt see the roof rack :/ I was tempted to make a quick u-turn to give the two thumbs up. :D

I actually wanted to blast the horns when I saw you, but there was a lady walking a dog on the side of the road

I rarely ever see 80's that aren't mall Cruisers, so I was a bit excited when I saw your front bumper and roof rack :D

As for the buses, it's actually a rather small contract and we should be done by next week :meh:

I use 3M plastic edging tape that allows you to scuff all the way to the line without tearing it up

This prevents lifting when peeling the masking tape :)

Thanks!

I got more Q's, You got any more A's?

I'm about to pull the trigger. My plan has changed a little; I now intend to do the entire body in grey similar to the original Moonglow and do the rack, bumpers, fender flares, etc in black. Now for the questions:

1. I picked up a couple of DA air sanders with the intent of enlisting some buddies. Any advice on what grit to use to prep for the sealer/primer? I have some clear coat failure and peeling, but otherwise the body is perfect. My plan was 180.

2. What would you recommend for a sealer primer? I was just going to pick up the UPOL Acid#8 etch primer, but I'm a nooB at this, so I'll gladly follow your suggestions.

3. How much primer? I was guessing 2 qts.

4. How much Raptor? Somewhere you said three kits for an 80 top to bottom, so I was planning to pick up:
1 tintable kit + 8 add'l bottles (12 total bottles of tintable liner),
2 bottles of black liner,
3 xtra bottles of hardener (4 total - enough for 16 bottles of liner)

5. What did you use to tint the liner on the stretch golf cart? That grey looks about perfect to me. Feel free to get specific.

6. Anything I am missing?

Thanks a million!

180 will be fine

I've used PPG primer/sealer with great results, but honestly, any etch primer will work fine.

Can't remember exactly how much I uses since I shot everything in stages, but I'd go with 3 just to be safe.

The problem with tinatable Raptor is that it doesn't cover nearly as well as the Black Raptor.

Black will cover almost twice as much, so take that into consideration.

Also, since each bottle is slightly off with levels, it can be difficult to get a proper match going from bottle to bottle when tinting :o

Like if you used two drops of black in order to tint one bottle gray and tried the same process on the second bottle, it might not match simply due to the level provided.

And you don't really have time to do a proper spray out as this stuff hardens pretty quick once mixed

That being said, the one can of hardener that comes with the kit is enough to mix 5+ bottles of Raptor (6 if you mix each bottle with slightly less).

5. What did you use to tint the liner on the stretch golf cart? That grey looks about perfect to me. Feel free to get specific.

PPG black tint

Just a few drops per bottle.

Hard to see in the pix, but each part of the cart is a slightly different shade of gray.

It would be more noticeable on a single panel, so I would suggest going with Al's if you want to do gray simply because it's mixed in large batches.

Proper masking tape (3M plastic edging tape)

Great info! Thanks!

I prefer the texture that can be produced with Raptor over what I've seen of the Al's jobs, but that's judging from internet photos.

I was thinking that one work around to the variation in tinting the liner would be to put it all into one batch, mix there, then pour back into the bottles. That would also give me a couple of bottles for future touch up.

Would the coverage be enhanced by priming in a similar shade to the intended top coat? Or does the tintable liner actually cover less area?

You can get the same texture as the Raptor using Al's.

It all depends on how you set the hopper gun trigger and air pressure.

I goofed with mine when I backed into the corner of my booth and the regulator touch my gut and blasted the wrong texture on my fender

Didn't want to waste an entire kit, so i just shot the rest to match :meh:

For fine texture like the Raptor, just crank up the pressure and go light on the trigger

The stuff in the Raptor bottles is pretty thick and you'd never get all of it out without thinning

The hardener thins it out, but then it hardens quickly :whoops:

Adding colored primer would only appear to give better coverage, but when it dries, you'll still see all the spots you missed.

The tintable stuff is more transparent than the black, so it just doesn't cover as much.

The same goes for lighter colors with regular automotive paint.

When I painted my car yellow, I went through 3 gallons of paint when only 1/2 would've sufficed for a darker color

It was just so transparent that it barely covered at all :o

This has to be the most popular talked about paint job and it clearly shows why  Great job and thanks for sharing....gotta ask you tho what size tire? and lift combo? Very nice stance.

305/70/16 BFG KM2's

Saggy stock coils and Metal Tech 2" spacers up front

OME 860 Mediums and bags out back

It's actually very close to stock ride height due to all the added weight :hhmm:

So, I'm looking for the right PPG primer, and it feels a lot like when my wife sends me out to get some flour, only to get stumped by the dozen different choices, and I'll probably choose incorrectly if I don't ask.

I'm seeing things like DPLF Epoxy, Prima K36 Acrylic Urethane, and NCP Corrosion resistant primers. Would you mind pointing me to what you use? Any reducer or hardener with that? I plan to start sanding next week, and want to be sure I've got my ducks at least in the park...

Did you use a mix to " dull" the finish? I am trying to decide between Al's and Raptor, Al's sells a kit additive that will matte the finish and makes it a harder surface too.

I want a finish just like this truck, not too bumpy, i want minimal texture!

Also, do you know if water base paint will mix in ok to tint? I am going black up top and grey on bottom!

You actually can't go wrong with any of those lol

I personally use PPG epoxy primer/sealer over paint than has just been scuffed down.

On bare metal, I use an etch primer first, then cover with the same PPG epoxy primer/sealer.

That being said, you really won't notice a difference with any of them :meh:

I didn't use any flattener.

For black, I prefer Raptor

For color, go with Al's

As for texture, it really depends on the gun settings and air pressure rather than the actual mix :meh:

For fine texture, crank up the pressure and squeeze the trigger slightly..

For thick texture, lower the pressure and squeeze more..

Water based paint will work fine for tinting Raptor (I can't speak for the Al's), however, I've found it to be nearly impossible to match colors bottle to bottle :o

Each bottle comes filled with a different level, so simply adding a few drops of tint to one bottle doesn't mean it will work the same for the next :whoops:

And unlike paint, the Raptor stuff started to harden very fast, so there's no time to do a proper spray out :bang:

If i was to use Al's wouldn't i have a better chance with the color because you put it all in the hopper after mixing? It looks like it hols enough the do the lower section, going for an LX450 type look....would you spray the whole truck black and then go back and mask and spray the dark grey or just tape lower off and do black and come back to do grey after?

Thanks for your help! This board is the best!

Yes, that's why I suggest Al's for color liner.

A full hopper will do roughly ~1/3rd of a rig

No need to cover the entire rig in black first, just mask off where you want sprayed.

My rig started off with just flares and bumpers, then I did the lower portion in black, then I did the upper protion in black and eventually, I taped off the center and did that in tan

Oh crap, i don't want that! I wonder why it did that? I just want a flat/satin look, should i add paint instead?

I can't seem to find the thread as it was one of the first rigs I saw done with Al's a while back, but I think he used too much flattener (like a whole bottle or sumthin) :hhmm:

It was done in blue and looked great when it was done, but kinda got bleached over time
