Builds So now I have a BJ74...

My '89 Bj74 jap import has chrome roof rails, maybe an option? I put a rear roll bar in to mount rear 3 point seat belts a requirement in Europe.

Got two kids, hence the belts.

So got the 74 back on the road this weekend after almost three weeks on the stands! But that's how it goes sometimes. I was able to cut the old flare off the tube and put a new flare nut on and re-flare. It came out great, but for got to take a picture of it, too excited that the flaring tool fit in the small space before the bend. The new stainless lines look great with the new rotors and springs. I'm stoked!

The only think left is to come up with some sway bar end links that both sheared off when I tried to add the finishing touch of new poly bushings. But I haven't noticed a difference in handling with out the bar yet, so not in a big hurry.

Are those the original plugs hanging? You can't see it here but the relay is zip tied to it, not sure what is going on with that!

Those 2 plugs are for the other horn, there are typically 2 of them (at least was on mine) but looks like yours only had 1?

MAJOR UPDATE!

I finally got my badly needed Old Man Emu 2.5" springs with greasable shackles and NitroCharger Sport shocks delivered and installed! It is a pretty straight forward install, it only took 10 basic steps:
1. Soak all nuts and bolts in PB Blaster the night before.
2. Support truck on stands and remove wheels.
3. Take off all old warn suspension parts, through in dumpster.
4. Install new heavy springs and shackles.
5. Wrestle axle in place and bolt to new springs.
6. Torque to spec.
7. Add yellow shocks, and steering stabilizer.
8. Do it all over again for the rear.
9. This time fight the shackles between the fuel tank and tail pipe.
10. Put on wheel and go enjoy the much improved ride.
See easy.

Hey, can you tell me which shackles and pins you used? I called and spoke with ARB and evidently there are multiple different ones and they couldn't tell me which were needed to fit my vehicle so I was probably just going to re-use my stock ones unless I can figure out for sure which ones to order. I've already ordered all the leafs and shocks.

@Delirium,

No to respond for @NM Frontier, but the ones for any 60/62 series will work just fine. You can tell the ARB representative that you need the ones for a 1988 FJ62, or a 1985 FJ60. Same ones as the ones you need for your 1988 BJ74.

Also, Georg @orangefj45 or Kurt @cruiseroutfit can probably set you up with the correct ones. They are both authorized ARB distributors. Georg and Kurt are awesome people (and awesome MUD vendors) and they will always send you the right parts for your application.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! I have decided to either go with anti-inversion shackles (not so much because I "need" them, but just because I like the way they look - I know, I know...) & pins Man-A-Fre sells or the Ironman shackles/pins. I have been exchanging emails with Al over at Man a fre recently and he said that the front pins on the BJ74 were the same as the 60 series pins they sell but that the rear pins were different and he would have to order those from the manufacturer. I was actually going to order all factory replacements but I recall that one of the pins or something was no longer available from Toyota when I looked. So I just found a guy on Ebay in portugal to get the factory rubber bushings from for <$30 shipped per 8 bushings & arrived in one week (I was hesitant at first but after receiving I verified they were genuine toyota) and was just going to get the shackles/pins elsewhere. I would like to keep the shackle size as close to stock as possible so I measured my front stock shackle length and from center of pin to pin they are about 3" while the rear are slightly longer at 3 & 3/8" if I remember correctly. The Manafre shackles are all 3.5 inches pin to pin, which is fine for rear but slightly longer than front... I have yet to get an answer from Ironman about their exact shackle length for the part numbers that they designate for my vehicle but I don't think they are anti-inversion shackles (can't seem to get an answer on that either, on their website it says something like: "some shackles may be anti-inversion, depending on the application" but it doesn't say which!). I have emailed both U.S. and Australian Ironman people with no luck.

Have you guys used either Man-A-Fre or Ironman shackles on a BJ74 and can comment on their quality or size? or if Ironman offers anti-inversion shackles?

Thanks again!

I kinda figured that's what they were for, one day I get it all cleaned up, thanks for confirming!

By the way, I replaced one of my horns with an aftermarket one so if you want it then you can have it if you want to cover shipping (shouldn't be much for priority USPS from TX to NM). It does work, but I can't say how well it works since I'm not sure what they are supposed to sound like, having no other BJ74 to compare horns with. I replaced it because my horn sounded like a tricycle... it was quite pathetic. I believe one of the horn speakers is a higher pitch and one is a lower pitch - I THINK that I replaced my higher pitch horn with an after market Hella one and left the other stock lower pitch. Anyway, just let me know.

Hey now! That's a classic international tone! Guaranteed to move both people and wildebeest.

New headlights finally! I'm looking forward to seeing at night!
