So I want a BJ74...

Sweet looking BJ74 - wish mine was as shiny still.
On the tent - I've driven a curvy highway home with about 500lb on a home-made rack resting on rain gutters. Strongly NOT recommended but I wouldn't worry about a tent at all.
Relax. Enjoy.

A few more driveway pics for now...

You and your better half can have some romantic evenings setting on the "front porch" bumper and watching the sun set.
Keep the photos coming ......

Nice score!

This thread is a very good read for someone like myself who is considering a 73/74, so I'd like to post up a few additional newbie questions here:

One. Can anyone discuss the drivability differences between the turbo and nonturbo version? How are the turbo version compared to say a second GEN forerunner with the 3.0?

Two. Can someone enlighten me on if there is any off-road advantage to having a full floor rear axle versus the semi float?

Three. I've never driven a front leaf equipped vehicle. What does it ride like? I personally would be running something like a 2 inch lift and some 255 85 16 mud terrains.

Four. Any info out there on how difficult it might be more cost involved in converting to a soft top version?

I think that is all for now, thanks advance for any help and information!

Sorry for the late reply, I'll do my best to answer.

1. I only can speak for the turbo, but I would not shy a way from a 3B that was in better shape then a turbo model, turbos can be added down the road. As for the second part of the question I think the 3.0 is gona win on the drag strip but either 13bt or 3b will win at the pump.
2. A full float has an advantage in strength, larger bearings and the ability to remove the axle with out the hub. Both are handy if you plan on big tires, 35"+ or a heavy load. But for general wheeling a semi float is fine.
3. Front leafs are gong to be rougher and stiffer then coils. But having the straight axle in there also is going to give you a stronger set up. As for the details of the ride quality that will depend on springs bumpers and winches.
4. Now that I have no idea.

Hope that helps!

NM,

Thanks for the response! I've been looking at 73s and 73s but I think the extra power will make it a good bit more fun to drive around town. Looks like about 22% more HP and 26% more torque, but nice to know that a turbo could be fitted to a 73 if that's what is desired.

One more important question - with the pass side seat slid fully forward, and the seat back tilted toward the dash (and obviously 2nd row seating removed) is it possible to sleep in the back? It looks like about 88" from the dash to the inside of the rear door, but not sure how far forward the seat goes. And these measurements are based off drawings, not real life tape measure!

Thanks again.

Really? Here is the file I used to get the 88" dimension. I would like to build a drawer system that is roughly 10-12"H. Then have an extension that folded forward and sat on top of the back of the front seat.

Any chance you could take a tape measure to it for me at some point in time?

Something like this....the vehicle is a D90:

NM - that would be awesome, thanks!

Hulsty - what is a swag? I have build a nice drawer system and sleeping platform for my 100-series and really like it. Blow up sleeping pad, unroll sleeping bag and boom I'm all set and ready to go. No setup or teardown time makes it really nice for multi-day trips on the move. I'm looking for a 70-series to use for my solo trips so this will be a nice feature for me.

I measured.... there is about 88" if you removed the seat but with the seat fully forward and seat back tilted forward, there is about 6 feet at the 12" height. A different seat that folds flat would give you the full 88".... or you could possibly modify the existing seat to do the same.
