Certainly a narrower tyre could be moved in closer to the chassis, at least until the wheel contacts a tie rod end for example. Moving the tyre/wheel combo in also narrows the track of the vehicle. Which could than make it easier to roll over.
Pushing the wheel out widens the track but going out too far will result in tyre/outer fender lip contact when turning or stuffing a wheel.
