Well, I'll let you know soon. I cut too low. Having to really chop to get the hole higher now. It was reasonably easy to cut the first hole, but after that the hole saw was a beast and became useless. Got some jigsaw blades and my Dremel. Thankfully, I have a 12v to 120V little box I bought on Sierra Trading Post. Says 700 watt with 1800 watt peak draw. Hope that's enough.

Did you drill the pilot hole below the body line?

My worst fear right now is botching a snorkel instal. I hope BR13 is still in the clear. Man that would suck :crybaby:

Yes, I drilled below the fender crease. We just hand held the template well below fender line and drilled the pilot hole. Should'a had the template up on the fender line like it said.

Well, did I botch it? Yes and no. It's fine and I got all the holes to line up. Actually that took more surgery than I expected, but the good thing is that it's tight, even if it's not tight for the right reason. So, in that sense I don't think I botched it at all.

On the other hand, I did not take nearly the care that just about anyone else would have in this situation. So I definitely botched doing it "well". But, as long as it bolts on, works, and doesn't rattle, I can't complain too much. It's only my fault that it went the way it did. I think the template is a teensie bit off on some of the studs, but you can adjust for that with some care anyway.

I'm gonna go ahead and put up the pics on my build thread so I don't hog this one. That'll take a few minutes for anyone who's anxiously watching.

If you can't wait for the write up on my thread, here are where my pics are online:

Cruiser stuff, build process

That link takes you to the first pic, my broken old corner light. Removing that light is the first step. If you go to this site, you can make the pics huge it you want by going to the right side of the image and using the pop out menu.

Here's my 'Mud build:

Going by the cut you made, it looks like drilling the pilot right on the crease would've worked out better :o

Yeah, looking at the snorkel you can tell the crease is about the middle of that hole. This is really simple stuff to not mess up. I was just being careless. I was also trying to break in my helper, :princess:. In the end she had a really good attitude about it all and the snorkel is going to work out very well. We'll just be a few grams lighter on sheet metal. It won't be visible. You can tell the big hole isn't much lower than the stud holes. I have about a thumb's width of snorkel below the stud holes for cover up.

So, for those nervous folks out there, here is your "worst case scenario". If you do it this badly, it'll still be fine.

i got my snorkel today and had it on the truck within an hour. The install is verrrrrrrry simple and you cant really make the holes too big. Here are a few pics of the install. All i need to do is just attach the pillar bracket which i will do tomorrow. I ran out of daylight and got hungry so i stopped.

Snorkel just out of the box...

Template all lined up. Had to cut a notch to fit around the antenna.

Drilling this was very intimidating but i came out on top. I think thats a 4 inch hole. I only had a 2 inch or 4 inch bimetal hole saw. worked out perfectly fine.

All of the holes drilled, filed, and painted.

Badass...

Money well spent. Line up the template and everything will be fine. I drilled the holes for the bolts slightly larger so i could move it a bit to line it up exactly right. And yes i like the matte finish of this better than the smoother finish of the safari snorkel.

Nice Job! If I had only cut out the template around the antenna and lined up with the top of the fender I would have been fine. I advised someone today to drill a bigger hole too. Glad to see that approach works. 4" diameter is HUGE! Did you just drill the studs according to the template too? I jacked mine up so bad I couldn't tell whether my stud points were off or not.

Guys, the snorkel deal is via Ebay or online? I have a 97 40th that I want to put one on.
For those that have, can you tell any increase in mpg or hp with the forced air going in?

On another note about this center diff switch. How do I find out what I have and don't have? Mine says fulltime 4wd. Can I add the switch? Should I or not? Why or why not? I have owned this truck since 1999 and about to roll 200K and wanna start doing everything I dreamed about (recover seats via Shane, bumpers, lights roof rack, snorkel, sound sys, suspension. it is my daily driver and I don't tear it up when hunting, but I will be 50 in few yrs and gotta get it done before then :) Any help is appreciated. Email me with tips or thoughts. Thanks

Looks great :)

Did you drill the pilot hole on or below the body line?

I'm pretty sure it was slightly below the line. Here is a picture of the pilot but it's hard to tell because of glare.

Yes I drilled the studs according to the template positions as well but I drilled larger holes for them too. About 3/8 hole.

Shipped from Malaysia. I ordered it on 3/30 and got it on 4/3. It's amazing how a package gets from the other side of the world quicker than it does from the Midwest. Pm me if you want to come see it, you are more than welcome to.

Ordered mine same day, received same day as you (4/3). Each time I loaded the tracking number it was in a different part of the world. I wouldn't mind takin the distance and time and figure out its average speed. I'll get around to that later. Mine actually came a day early!

I believe everybody is getting it from e-bay.

As far as power/mpg gain I don't think you would notice very much, if at all
But from the sound of it you would probably want to put it on. I did (OEM) and I've never noticed any difference in performance, but am glad I did. ;)

And your truck already has the center differ locker, you just need to install the switch which I believe is hiding somewhere behind the dash where the switch goes, IIRC.

Good luck and have fun!

So, assuming the 100 Series snorkel is the exact specs of the Safari, does anybody know where I can find a cyclone style precleaner similar to this 70-Series? Do you guys think it's even worth it or :meh:
