Holley is sending a new regulator. I found a couple threads from other forums that had a similar noise but not as loud. All of those were from an improperly installed regulator. We will see.

That is an interesting noise to say the least. If a new regulator solves the problem, be sure to follow-up with an after video.

Will definitely report back and do an after video.

Made another video to show the squeal at key on: not running. Just so I had it before I change the regulator when it gets here next week.

On a side note, been driving it a lot and it’s doing great. Starts faster than our newer cars, hot or cold. Sniper seems to be tuning itself quite well. It’s also requiring less throttle for the same speeds which seems to run quieter. Maybe in my head.

The new pressure regulator showed up today, I was very careful to install without pushing on the center because Holley said that can change pressure. Key on and it’s even worse! Made another squeal video with key on, not running.
At this point, I figure I need to plumb that pressure port back in so I can see pressure and go from there. I’m ready to make all new lines with bigger radius and all. On a whim, I figured I should pull all my double line clamps off 1 by 1 just in case one of those is causing vibration. Well I’ll be the son of two people who don’t get along; that did it! The double line clamp right in front of the valve cover, about a 6” stretch, was causing all the noise. Must’ve been harmonics, vibration, whatever. As soon as I started loosening that one the noise started getting quieter. Solution, remove that one. No more squeal! Video of it running with that one removed. So I guess you can have too many clamps.

Squeal:

No squeal!:

So is the pressure gauge going back in now?

Yep. I’ll remake that feed line again with the pressure port inline. For some crazy reason, I like the idea of knowing what the pressure is down the road.

It really helps if you have to trouble shoot. It's kinda like looking for fuel thru the little window on the carb.

Yep. That’s why I was so set on including it in the first place. Luckily I love doing the same multiple times…. What was rkymtn’s quote the other day: “we do it nice because we do it twice”.
Well, practice makes passable so third time making the feed line I should be able to knock it out super quick….

Just installed my Rebuilt OEM carb and she ran and drove for the first time in a year and a half. Still very jealous of your setup.

How pricy would you say everything was to convert it to that sniper?

I pieced everything together myself and built all my brackets. That route (and not including the new flaring tool) I’m right at $1700. It could be done a little cheaper with an inline pump and all soft lines but most of the costs are pretty fixed (and going up).

Really not all that bad especially with the quality and time you’re giving it. Glad you figured out that stupid squeak.

If I had a newer rig with the 2F (and couldn’t/didn’t want to make my own air cleaner adapter and brackets) I would’ve gone through Mosely for the complete kit. It’s a little more $ than piecing it together yourself, but not really once you include the brackets and adapters needed. Especially since it’s all tailored to the newer/2F setup (adapter and throttle brackets aren’t the same for older rig). Also, it supports a vendor and you get great tech help if you need it (so I’m told). Just throwing that out there for people who may be considering a Sniper and looking into costs. All the little bits add up, plus shipping, plus tax (even online if you live in WA because my governor needs my money more than I do).

Great sounding motor. I kinda liked the kazoo noise though.
I could hear that noise over the engine and road noise at 40 mph. Pulling into parking lots people would turn and look, not in a good way. I am so glad it’s sorted!
In tank pump is louder than I’d hoped, just a low whir, but at least I know it’s pumping. Can only hear it when idling.
My mileage is not great so far. I just filled up after an even 200 miles and averaged 7.7 mpg. I need to check my speedo/odometer for accuracy but I checked them with gps before and thought I was close. I have noticed the afr dipping down to 9 when taking off from a stop and under heavier throttle. I’ll have to keep an eye on it because that’s terrible!
Otherwise, just enjoying driving it! Steering box is leaking slightly and still a random few drips from the front of the engine I want to address but not huge concerns at the moment.

8mpg! How much more power are you getting from the motor? Or are you using gas to flush out your exhaust system? That’s brilliant, by the way. People need to flush their exhaust more often.

Don’t know much about those carbs, beyond the fact that the sure look pretty… but are they fancy enough to have control over fuel delivery rate?

Something sounds off? I have read of many getting 15+ mpg on the regular after switching to EFI. Kid I bought some parts from recently had an AFI kit on his 73, 32x11.5 tires and said he got 17mpg consistently daily driving his truck here in Southern California.

I agree. I was/am expecting at least 12.

Followed my wife in her car, with a gps too to ensure accuracy. Looks like my speedo is spot on but the odometer is 7% off. Drove another 100 miles and topped off and got almost 9 mpg (with odo correction). Still seems wrong. I do see a lot of 10 ish afr so increased idle and cruise to 13 target. Now I’m getting surging at idle and afr will spike to 30-40 and usually die. Also can’t get a steady idle speed below 720 ish. Changed the settings to what they were and still the issues. At idle, looking down the sniper, seems like there is a lot of fuel being delivered. I may try a settings reset and see if anything is better. Otherwise I’m at a loss. Maybe bad O2 or tps or????
