Frustrating morning, then relief!

Before I put the passenger seat back in I figured I’d add in a weatherproof disconnect plug for the fuel pump, in the event I ever need to remove it. Picked one up at my local auto parts store and wired it in. Seat back in, fuel lines clear seat. On to startup! No start. No sputter, no chug, nothin. It hit me: I had been leaving the key “on” while doing some setup, did I burn up my new pertronix?! Checking spark, it’s there but weak; dead battery? Looks like it’s 11.8v so battery on the charger, pulled plugs to check and they were fine. Spun it over a few seconds with no plugs in case I flooded it from multiple restarts. All this was over the course of an hour while wrangling a 2 and 5 year old; where the hell is these kids mom?! Fully charged: NO START!!!!!

I’m stepping away from this worthless turf for a minute, may as well pick up some tools. Bent down by passenger door and just happened to look between seat and tank and saw that damn plug! Didn’t notice when I installed it, but the wires weee backwards from each other on each half. So had power to ground, ground to power! Swapped the pins and immediate start up!

Let it warm up and adjusted the idle, took it for a drive, fine tuned idle and timing. It is running amazing! Got about 10 more miles on it. Quicker starts, more power, smoother take offs, better acceleration! Exhaust leak is pretty loud now so not going to drive it more until that is fixed. That squeal/hum is still there, much quieter and only at idle but I am just going to yank that whole fitting. If I grab with my hand it significantly quiets it.

Happens to all of us LOL. Do you by chance know where your exhaust leak is? I think i still may have a leak on my build, however i have a nice thick gasket, and installed a header. Torqued the bolts to correct torque. So im not entirely sure where the leak would be.

Well done..

Yep. Leak is right at the front where the manifold meets the head. Started as a small tick that I actually thought was valvetrain noise at first, would go away once it warmed up. Now it’s just worse every time I start it. It’s a remflex gasket and that’s what I’m replacing it with. This is the first one I’ve ever had fail but I attribute it more to the F exhaust design than the gasket.

Have exhaust manifold will ship?

Yours if you need it.

Manifold is fine, just a gasket problem I think. But thanks for the offer!

Still stands...

Break squelch x2 if your compromised....I'll put it on a resupply bird 1st thing out ..

I just picked up a REMFLEX for future manifold ops too. Usually, a fire and forget product. I'm curious now.

On mine, there is a hole in the gasket and it looks like there should be a stud through there, but there isn’t a hole drilled. Maybe this gasket and header are for f or 2f?
You need your own thread instead of hijacking skreddys build 😉

That gasket and header both look suspect.

F engine problem/design. No outboard stud/bolt hole for the very front of exhaust on an F or 1F. So essentially, every header and gasket made are for a 2F that has that hole. Also, the stud sizes are different between F and 2F so you need to take care to center the gasket and not rely on the studs or there’s a chance to get leaks.

Back in business! Took the kids to Disneyland last week so no updates. Had time this morning to get my new manifold gasket installed. Removed the fuel pressure port fitting altogether and made a new section of fuel line to replace it. No dice, still have that annoying squeal/hum. I think it is coming from the sniper pressure regulator so I may call Holley tomorrow and see if they’ve heard of this. Now to put some miles on it!

I remember reading about the base (gasket area) making a squeal. I think a spacer or small riser may have solved it.

Most of the videos and posts I’ve seen where the spacer was the cure, it sounds more like a hiss. I took a video I’ll try to post later. You can feel the noise at the regulator/return outlet. I saw 1 other post scouring different forums where they had the same issue and a new regulator cured the problem.

I do remember reading about a regulator noise. I think Holley sent the PO replacement parts.

Here’s a video.

Looks like I’m trying to show something on the firewall, I’m not. Was just trying to get the phone mic closer to regulator, didn’t help.

I agree that would have to go!! That would drive me even nutter.

What does it sound like at idle?

Same. It’s definitely fuel pressure related because it starts as soon as you turn the key, not running.

Before you eliminate the noise, you may wish to contact Timex, they may be looking for a new really annoying sound for their new alarm clocks.:)
