Mine is 8 years old. Wife had it done when I was out to sea. It had a few runs, painted one gutter not the other, painted my windshield washer nozzles (had to pick out the paint so they would work), painted flare gaskets. But they gave her a nice discount only charged $600. After 8 years of not being taken care of and being parked outside is only peeling on 1 spot on the hood. All and all would do it again but I am not fussy. Painted the same color, black.

I will point out that I had some overspray here and there (places that don't matter to me like cross member/frame horns) and when they called me to say they were done, I looked it over and made them take it back to fix a run or two. Small price to pay for a overall good paintjob, IMO.

This is a photo from back in early 2013, just after I picked it up from Maaco.

It's still holding up great now in 2018 and to the casual observer, it looks pretty much the same today. The only places where the paint they laid down is now missing is where I damaged it with self-inflicted scrapes. It's been a decent, durable paint job. Definitely not "show car" quality, but certainly good enough for adventure vehicle duties. Good enough that I still get positive comments on it today.

Like anything paint related, this is all about prep and the skill of the person with the gun. I will say my shop did a fine job, but I can't speak for any other shop. I got to see my truck before and after primer and it looked like they did a thorough job in prep. I had done a bit of pre-paint disassembly - removed the mirrors, flares, window trim and lights. Maaco did a bit of welding where I had removed badges.

As for quality of the paint itself, I do know that they used a Sherwin Williams product. Almost certainly not the very best that SW makes, but at least it was from a major name-brand and it has proven to be durable so far. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

this is an old post, but just reading up on peoples repaint experiences. wondering 2 things about your truck, 1 was what did you pay for that Maaco job? looks great in that photo. and 2, did you remove the 'Toyota Land Cruiser' badge on the rear door and replace with a decal? looks really clean but on my truck its a big plastic badge.

thanks.

@jpj222 I got a quote from Maaco recently, it was for their top paint option (which isn't saying much) for $3500 which also includes clean removal of the old roof rack and rubber rails as well as a ton of dent fixes. This is in the WA area.

Taking off the bumpers and flares myself (which they will put back and paint) would save a few hundred $ but not much. Out of curiosity I asked if I could start the prepping myself and if that would reduce some of the cost, but this particular Maaco wouldn't entertain that.

I also got another quote from a more reputable mom and pop shop and their quote was pretty much identical. However they did would allow me to do some of the prepping myself to save some $.

The paint job was done back in 2013 and, to be honest, I really can't recall what I paid for it. I want to say something in the neighborhood of $1300? But I could be off by as much as $500. That's just a wild guess. I'm reasonably sure it was less than $2k. I removed all the lights, racks, trim, mirrors and bumpers. The shop did the filling (the holes left from the rear badges) and sanding, and of course primer, paint and clear.

The rear badge I also removed as mine was cracked and scuffed to hell. I have some rudimentary skills in Adobe Illustrator, so I cobbled up a pattern and had a local printing shop print it up on transfer vinyl to make the decal.

The paint is still holding up today. I'd say I easily got my money's worth. No complaints. But I won't go as far as to say everyone else's experience with Maaco will be as good as mine. It's totally up to the specific person working on the job as to how good a job they do. I was fortunate that my shop did a fine job.

I really think you can do the prep work and then have maaco shoot the paint. I would call a few maaco around you until 1 bites and says sure, bring it prepped and they will paint. Maaco if I am not mistaken, are all franchised so different owner means different answers.

My local 60 fellar did all his own prep and had Maaco blast it. It looks great now, no telling 10 years from now :meh:

my thread on paint

Here's a year under Utah weather. Slightly off from the factory color not 2 tone, but I don't mind. I do mind the overspray under the hood and undercarriage. Overall happy with the results

Ding ding ding. Winner.

They are all different as franchised owners. Call around. Read The reviews.

The best one local to me was 45 min away. Super cool guy and great vibe And lots of awesome reviews from car enthusiasts.

The most popular one had crap reputation long term. Lots of week after positive reviews. Also the one pushing the cheapest options.

The closest one was second best reviews. Cool up front didn’t Quite perform what was requested. (Sprayed over vin tags and left the one dent they were supposed to fix) Price was right and looks good over 5 years later without a garage

Covered in pollen at the moment but will grab a pic when clean

I’m tossing around the idea of getting mine done at a MAACO that a forum member owns. He owns two, one in St Petersburg and one in Tampa. His handle is Mdej3 and he does great work. This is one of his before and afters he sent me. The cost is about $6k to remove the rear hatch glass and windshield, 5 hrs of body work, painting trim, bumpers etc, and removing all the externals with a separate base and clear.

Did the prep work myself , both single stage paint jobs , I’m happy with it 🤷‍♂️

Curious, did you sand the body down to the primer? You live in ABQ so you know the typical paint issues on the hood and roof. I'm trying to decide the best way to prep the hood for a paint.

Thx.

I did my own paint work myself. You do not sand to bare metal unless there is rust. You just want to scuff the surface which will allow the paint to adhere to the SUV.

If you have no rust, or repaired areas with putty or bondo, you sand to smooth and scuff the body. You prime, sand and smooth then paint. You can also do guide coating which is a first layer you spray first right after you prime key areas (helps to strengthen the paint and then layer the paint on as well as the clear coat.

yup. I like to use the purple scotch bright pad for scuffing then switch to 600/800 sand paper to smooth it out.
