Should I ditch my 60 and get an Iron Pig?

My new to me '72 FJ55. Been in TN its whole life. Sitting in a barn since 2007. Brought it home and went over the basics and she fired right to life. Drove it last night for the first time and my initial impression is it would be good for a DD as long as you dont have to go over 55 or so. It received really good mechanical care its whole life but obviously the body needs a little attention. I've owned a 60 and a 62 along with a bunch of 80 Series over the years. My last 62 was a '88 and it was alot of fun to drive as a DD. I spent as much time talking to people about it at the gas station as I did driving it, LOL. If I keep the 55 I imagine that same thing will happen. LC's are not that popular around NE Ohio.

I may be at one extreme end but the question my accountant asked was “what makes you want to spend the cost of two brand new full size trucks to drive an old Toyota that you always have to work on” and I couldn’t honestly give an answer that would even remotely make sense to an accountant so I just shrugged my shoulders and smiled. :meh:
Its called Swine Flu.

I think it depends on what you get in the trade. If you are going to stay stock it will cost a lot in the end to keep it comfortable and running. I have the luxury that except the frame and the body everything else is some kind of frankenstein of several GM vehicles. This can make my upkeep cheaper, and if i need something odd I can just fab it. My pig has been able to be a DD for a few months at a time then it finds a way to challenge me. So maybe not quite a DD yet.

IDK if this helps your decision, but I wouldn't trade my pig for your 60.

To me, there is nothing cooler than a 55. It is one of two Land Cruisers I regret selling. (My 72 55 and my 78 40).

I would DD the hell out of a 55 if I could find a running, decent body 55 that was fairly inexpensive. I don't want it pristine. I like some patina and wear on it.

I have been looking for years for one. It wouldn't be my only vehicle because it just doesn't make sense to me to have as an only vehicle. But I have 3 80s so having a 55 to drive daily if I wanted to would be the best.

Those are both really sweet rigs. Wow. How much will a pig in that condition run me - ball park?

Green one is Scrap daddies and I believe he is holding right around the 5K mark, blue one is mine and I’m +/- a K of him.

Scraps build,

SLOW 71

And mine,

Target carrier

I turned down 7500 cash over a decade ago for a pig that was not quite half the pig either of those are...whatever you thought was difficult about the 60, is a parkwalk compared to ANYTHING on a pig. not for the light hearted. get ready for more rust, more noise, more gas vapors, more headaches and less comfort. if you are ok with that, then climb on board, brother. a drinking habit will make it easier...

I'd consider that kind of a trade if the 55 was pre 76. The smog thing is absolutely the worst thing to live with in California when you have an old cantankerous wagon.

A 55 with stock drive train and engine properly sorted can be a daily driver AND a weekend warrior (parts are available). The difficult part is the condition of the rest of the pour little piggy. Most cosmetic parts are hard to find if at all. The rust is the devil that moved into the spare bedroom. Finding a 55 that has not been bitch-slapped, beaten, face lifted, had foreign objects and organ transplants or lived in a swamp most of its life is going to be a challenge, but they ARE out there. The pride in resurrecting one is what a lot of people thrive on. As seen on this forum people ENJOY going to great lengths to salvage this almost prehistoric beast and help others do the same. Choices are; find the best that you can afford and enjoy the journey or buy what you can't afford and enjoy the journey. Your choice, do you want to drive around in a Cadillac or chase a greased pig with the biggest smile on you face and cheers from all who care. Your asking a question in a thread where everyone has 55 pie on their smiling face. What answer are you expecting. Answer: belly up to pork pie with all the other flying pigs and live the dream.

Ask the dogs

100% true, Chicks and dogs dig 55’s.

60’s are a very distance second.

So what have we surmised, if you enjoy beer a 55 is for you, if you have a very high threshold for pain then the 55 is for you, if owning one of the coolest looking vehicles Mr. Toyota ever put his name on is a life priority then a 55 is for you, if you’re not afraid of throwing good money after bad then a 55 is for you, if you like chicks and dogs then nothing but a 55 will do..
