Lots of great advice here. Don't overthink it, but be honest with yourself. If you want to pay mechanics to try and keep it going for you then it is a bad decision IMO. If you will enjoy repairing and maintaining it as a hobby and have the time, initiative and space to do so, it might make sense for you. Either way, don't expect it to be reliable daily transportation until you have spent a lot of time and money going through it with a fine tooth comb. Once that process is complete it should be very reliable but not nearly as comfortable as a modern vehicle. But as we all know, the cool factor if off the charts.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I’ve been trying to take my time and not get into anything too stupid. I do want a project car, however I have to acknowledge that I don’t get in too far over my head despite the goal of restoring something eventually. I can definitely get around on my bike or via public transportation, and worst case scenario I do live with the gf who has a reliable vehicle.

I think my biggest hold ups are that I don’t really have the income to support that old of a vehicle, however I do graduate with an engineering degree in December so the first should be turning there as well as my inexperience being a source of fear getting into the hobby being that I don’t know these vehicles all that well or what kinda of red flags to walk away from as far as expensive repairs or parts availability. Logic says it’s a bad decision, but the dreams are saying otherwise. Has anyone created a buyers guide as far as what kinds of things could be dealbreakers on these old vehicles?

As far as running condition goes all I have so far is that “transmission clutch is good engages brakes are good needs tires and fluids changed Basic TLC.” Just need to reach out to the community before I go and talk to the seller without any frame of reference on what that entails on these in particular.
IH8MUD is the ultimate site for all things Land Cruiser. Prior to buying my 60, I researched IH8MUD. I did find some of the blog posts on Corsetti site very useful. Many posts on what to look for. (BLOG | Corsetti_new - https://www.corsetticruisers.com/blog).
Good luck if you go through with the purchase.

Although it's already mentioned, think about it in a different light...time. I spent a huge chunk of my 20's wrenching on old vehicles and while I can say I enjoyed it, I also look back and wonder what else I could have done with my time. I like to travel, explore, etc. and while you can obviously do these things in an old 60, the time you have to do those things will be impacted by how much effort it will take to keep it on the road. I don't know if marriage and/or kids are in your future, but the day will quickly come when the responsibilities of life will consume most, if not all of your time and you'll be reminiscing about this time in your life more than you'd like to admit. Everybody has their own version of what makes them the happiest, and if this is your thing, then go for it. But even if it is, just know that the price of that joy will be a lot of time dedicated to it.

@Stuckinthe80s Nic! Did you wander off from the 80 forum and get lost??

Great advice though. I haven't ever heard that take, but it's a good one.

Hey all, brand new here so let me know if there is a better place for this post! On mobile so hopefully formatting is okay.

I found an ‘84 fj60 for sale near me with 240k on it. It’s a 4 speed and it looks like the seats have been redone. Seller is claiming that it just needs the fluids changed and tires. Listed for 12k. Is this a good deal?

I love the these land cruisers and have been considering picking it up and making it the dd for my last semester in college.
I wish I could find that near me!!
