Yup, it sounds like Africa all-right, just a bit behind Central America?

A bit more than a bit behind!! The haven't heard of electricity in many of the towns over in Sierra Leone and the "water tap" is the nearest creek! At least in Central America most towns have power, flaky and unreliable but at least they have it, same for water. It'll be a bit of an adjustment.

Hi Charles, I dont know about Africa, here we may have water, and power, but we´re lacking out of mechanics :p

In Africa they are also lacking decent mechanics, that's why I want my truck there. At least I'll know it's properly maintained.

Packing the piggy for the "Relic Run" RelicRun.com > Home

I got to make a quick trip to Tuscon first to pick up some OEM rims and tires since I'm riding on '60 series rims right now.

It should be a blast from the past!!

Had to fix the rear brake shoes AGAIN. The second time in about 3 years. The friction material separated from the steel backing and caused a severe thump in the pedal.

Has anyone else experienced this?

The left is the way the shoes SHOULD be. The left is the separated shoes and friction material.

It was nice to meet you and your wife Charles. I was worried that i'd have the only pig on the Relic Run this year, which is ironic since we almost had 4-5 pigs! It's amazing how fast the dynamics can change with a few peoples' plans changing, or vehicles breaking down.

Anyways, I hope to travel more bumpy roads in the future with your clean pig in front of mine. I much enjoyed the view of a clean pig out front and Mike's BJ40 in my rearview. What an awesome weekend.

Here's some shots that Mike took with his 35mm:

We just got home after a pleasant drive back. It was great camping and wheeling "Like it's 1979!" with other folks who like "Old Iron". We'll definitely try to make it again if we are able.

Here's a couple of shots of the range of vehicles that were on the trip as well as a shot of the '55 on the trip home on I-15 near the Idaho/Montana border.

We went to the car show today, "Mopar in the Mountains" in Cranbrook, B.C. We were the only Toyota in the show :) Yes, it was an open show, not just for Mopar models.

Here's a few pic's

Enjoy, because it's a lot of work to get a shine on the piggy!!

She looks good with a shine!

Looks beautiful!

Did you win any prizes?

I bet the Mopar people liked the Pig!

We didn't win any prizes, and nor did I expect to. Well we won a door prize which will be VERY useful when we go to work in Africa in the next few months, a hand cranked camp lantern, no batteries needed. My piggy is a working truck, not a show truck so while it is in nice shape for a piggy, it is not in showroom condition, nor does it get trailer-ed around the countryside. There are a few scratches in the paint and that sort of thing.

We had a few comments along the lines of "I have a truck like that but I don't keep it for car shows!"

The Mopar folks were OK with it. There were probably 50% Mopar and the rest various makes, mostly US of course.

Our ulterior motive was to talk to folks about our future work in Africa and for that it was good.

Fixed a nagging oil leak on the turbo discharge pipe. It had been dripping oil on the header for a while. I finally got around to pulling the turbo and then the discharge pipe and having it re-soldered. Apparently it was not a good soldering job to start with. Got it together a few days ago and went out on a 100+ mile trip with the piggy today and no leaks!!

Next up the brake warning light and then my maintenance is up to date.

It'll just be more searching for un-obtainium after that to get the piggy 100%.

What parts are you missing Charles?

Front door vinyl to match this (no speaker holes in it please). I can deal with broken/missing hardboard backing or missing ashtrays.:

The little knobs for the heater/vent controls.

A good drivers side sun visor, the kind that clip into the mirror.

The rubber that is attached to the body and runs along the bottom of the tailgate and up the sides.

The rubber under the hood at the firewall.

That's probably about it, at least it's all I can think of for now.
