Sounds to me like you need a $4000 minivan. My coworker has been trying to kill his dodge and he can't do it. $900 a month for a vehicle is absolutely insane. I would not advise financing a 20 year old vehicle either. Find something you can buy with cash and put that money away for something later down the road.
Yeah I’m not here on mud to go full Dave Ramsey on someone but I totally agree you don’t need us telling you to make another bad decision. The lx is not the truck for you. The cash sale minivan is.
Damn near a grand a month for a Bronco. Yikes. They can hardly even sell them now. Not like I can really judge, I am well over-invested in my truck relative to what it's worth.
I am looking at an 05-07 GX or LX but am concerned about off road ability, fuel economy, sluggishness, expensive and limited aftermarket support. Obviously, they are very capable off road but getting one to the same caliber as the bronco will be expensive.
Cool video.
What happened with VW? They used to make great cars! They forgot how to? All they make now is landfill trash. (maybe a manual base GTI as an exception)..

Driving a Type2 bus was the most fun I had on 4 wheels, a great feeling! I miss that thing. Been over 20 years since I sold it, still kicking myself.
BTW, no sign from OP, I think you guys scared him away!
Funny. A buddy and I refer to the entire VWAG lineup as landfills.
I had a lot of fun with MK1 diesel / turbo diesel Rabbits (still have a 1980 Rabbit pickup). And dailyed the F out of a 2003 TDI wagon for a decade. Dieselgate really turned me off to the brand. The gas motors after the early oughts have been completely garbage.
Now that I have buddied up with Mr T there is no going back.
Armor, bumpers, gearing? No. Do that later when you can use it.
Better off buying an Acura MDX or something for now...
20k miles a year?! I do that in my EV sedan and leave the LX470 parked in the driveway. You'll spend $500/month on gas, plus tires and misc wear. If you're 60 mins from mountain trails that's one thing. If you're 6 hours from anything fun off-road.... just live the life you have man, haha.
Family car/crossover for now. SUV later when you're back out west.
The problem is there is no justifying a 100/470 if you only look at it as a monthly expense. I have two of them because I love driving them. It’s the equivalent of a $90k truck that I have less than $20k in. It burns a lot of gas - don’t care. It rock solid, even at its age. It’s a pleasure to drive. It’s easy to work on. It looks good. It’s reliable as anything on the road. It will take me deep in the back country after driving in comfort for hours on the highway to get there. You can feel good investing in upgrading them because the engine, transmission and chassis will outlive the upgrades.
In all those ways it’s a better investment than most anything else, but it won’t be cheaper than a minivan every month.

2021+ sienna. Currently my dream car besides a diesel L405 but I won't mention the latter on here too much.
We have 5 kids. Like to go out and explore. Hardly ever take the 100 at this point because the wear and tear and gas consumption.

Forgive me for derailing but the whole diesel emissions thing is a joke. DEF is worse for the environment than trucks spewing out a little soot. Not advocating for rolling coal as I think it's just a waste of fuel/looks dumb unless it's a pulling truck.
I actually admire VW for cheating on emissions. I wish they didn't get caught; the cars made great fuel economy and were more reliable without emissions stuff.
I've been driving a 100 series for 16+ years and Land Cruisers for 37+. My Cruisers have been, over the years, daily drivers, work trucks, expedition/offroad rigs and passion projects. In all this time, however, I've never been able to (or wanted to) justify them purely on the basis of operating expense and fuel economy, it's impossible. I think a $900 car payment is pretty high for a vehicle that isn't meeting your current needs. I think replacing the Bronco with an LX/GX might be reasonable once you're back in the proximity of trails, but for your current use, you likely won't get close to that 18 MPG on either model, especially after even minor modifications. I agree with the peanut gallery, buy something cheap and sensible to drive for now until you relocate. If you can keep swinging the payments, keep the Bronco and enjoy it during the weekends, but don't keep putting high mileage on it.
That said, I'm confident no Cruiserhead goes to our deathbed wishing we'd driven a Prius for the fuel economy instead!
