so addicted to this story....

Man where do you find all these great places to eat in middle of nowhere? We drove through Amarillo on our way to Santa Fe and ending up eating at a Waffle House(not my first choice) instead of taking a chance eating at a place we would regret. although while up near Santa Fe we did find this place, http://elparagua.com/], thanks to a tip from a FedEx employee. It's in a place where you least expect it. I guess I need one of them fancy phones.

Lee I am praying for you and your dad

Dear God man, that is like admitting you kissed your sister. For shame.

I grew up in the Texas Panhandle and a lot of those diners I mention have been around for years. If you don't know where to eat, stop and ask a local. FWIW, I don't have one of those fancy phones either. I just ask around.

Lee I am praying for you and your dad

I appreciate that, and so does Army. Everything helps.

fantastic....epic

thanks

Glad you're enjoying the ride. It's far from over.

You inspired me to drive 600 miles this weekend to Bodega Bay.Thanks for the inspiration!

You're welcome, and thanks for the pics. They're inspiring. Red Rocket is a fine brew, but from Bear Republic I prefer Hop Rod Rye, or Racer 5. They don't make a beer that's anything less than excellent, IMHO.

FYI, I do not have writer's block. My Dad, whom I wrote about earlier, is hospitalized and I'm camping in his room. I'll try to finish up the Colorado Girl chapter tonight, but I may need to take a time out after that. Keep the faith, 'cause the tale will continue.

For some reason reading this reminds of Ed Abbey's A Fool's Progress, but more upbeat.

Hey Jim, good to see you in here. I'll have to think about the Abbey comparison. As I recall, some of his writings were pretty angry. He did have a fine dry sense of humor. I hope this is more upbeat, 'cause I'm sure not angry.

I'm glad you surfaced. Reminds me that I need to include you in this tale, for the lunch hookup we never quite pulled off when I drove the old rustbucket through Alabama.

I bought a six pack of the Racer 5 too. I'll uncap one tonight and drink to Army's health.

You have a little over a month to get him out and ready for his springtime trip to Bountiful. Hoping all works out well for both of you.

I may be spending a little time in south Mississippi this summer catching turtles and who knows what else. Maybe we can arrange something if you'll be in the area.

I used tolive in Santa Rosa, and made the trek to bodega bay every other weekend.... man I miss that place... now I live in Minnesota :crybaby:

You inspired me to drive 600 miles this weekend to Bodega Bay. I ate at 2 greasy spoons and never broke down (unfortunately).

I also drank some Red Rocket

Thanks for the inspiration!

What's wrong with Minnesota? All you need in Minnesota is a boat, a slip bobber set up, and a pound of leeches and your catching walleye all day long! I guess a snowmobile is nice for the winter months.

If you've never had the pleasure of driving the 101 in the summer as the sun sets over the western horizon... with your best girl in your arms... you don't know what you are missing....

Its the Viking in me (fullblooded Swede here) I think that loves the sea.

Got fishing pole and me and my boy go to the junction of the Mississippi and St.croix but its just not the same.

I´m at work and i have gotten very few things done because o f this thread....:hillbilly:

I spend most of my time on MUD in the 80 section. Popped over here just because and am glad I did. I live in Clovis and am fairly familiar with the landscape so far. People move here from other parts of the country and hate the flat grassland but you hit the nail on the head. It has it's own beauty that can take your breath if you'll open up and let it

Great place! Anyone who drives through Santa Fe and eats fast food deserves to get dysentery.:grinpimp: I miss the greasy spoon sorts of places - Australia seems to be mostly chain fast food and fish & chip shops. I'd give anything for breakfast at Horseman's Haven or Bobcat Bite right now....:whoops::ban::bounce:

Many years ago when I was at CU, I was driving down to Louisiana to work on a shrimp boat one summer when I stopped at a greasy spoon outside of Natchez, Mississippi called 'Karl's Kountry Kitchen'. It was the best breakfast I'd ever had and the people were the most colorful I'd ever seen at that point in my life. It was fantastic and I still remember it - if I'd stopped at a fast food chain, I know that it would have been long-since forgotten.

Here's one of my favorites in Cloverdale, Ca. The Owl Cafe on Hwy 101.

Greasy Spoon Tech: When I was a kid they had the best chili burger around. Or maybe it was the best because I was there with my dad.

Interesting tech tip: the reason I was carrying my mountain bike was that I had broken the accelerator cable on my Weber 32/36 a couple months before. The Shimano brake cable for the V-brakes has the same exact end that fits on the pedal assembly. Spare parts.

fireflyr, since you've already got a picture of a favorite place to eat, would you mind starting a thread over on chat on the best non-chain places to eat? I think that would be a great resource! Thanks in advance.
