That's quite the repair list and sounds expensive. You probably don't want to go this route, but have you considered getting a donor vehicle to swap stuff over to and then parting/scrapping the rest of your truck? It seems that folks have had good luck SASing 2wd minis and keeping them low.

Yeah actually did, for about 1/2 a second but scrapping my rig just hurts too much to think about and frankly it's not that far gone, just needs some love.

Found cab #3 in Canton last night for cheap, gonna pick that up Saturday. From there I'll just dive in and start knocking things out over time and as money allows. The holidays are usually pretty slow for me so I should be able to knock out at least the exterior things fairly quickly and move n from there. Brakes would probably be 1st on the to-do list after the exterior is finihed.

Haven't decided on the tranny yet, frankly 2nd gear & 5.29s aint the end of the world and did that for most of the trip in Moab. Obviously I'll have to address it fairly soon but before I pull the tranny again I have other decisions to make. As I said before I left I'm strongly considering dumping the 5.29s and going 4.10s (for strength reasons) and triple cases/triple sticks but not yet sold on the idea.

decisions... decisions... If I didn't have this HP 4.10 diff already in hand I'd probably just reload the 5.29s and call it good but I can't get past the options it presents.

Dang that is alot of work. Alot went down out west but it looks well worth it!! Good luck hope you get it all worked out for gsmtr 2016.

Brakes:
  1. Brakes - tired of spongy unreliable break peddle. Can be dangerous in some situations.

for near future use:

so found this handy little thread for rear disc conversion: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/969800-easy-disc-brake-conversion.html

Nice thing about this one is no need for brake line adapters, Toyota brake lines should work just fine.

Parts needed :

Brake rotors from 01 Mitsubishi Montero sport : Part Number: 31143 (http://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-...01/6-cylinders-h-3-0l-mfi/231689_205733_2708/
94 Nissan Pathfinder Brake calipers: Part Number: 19-B1199 (http://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-...94/6-cylinders-h-3-0l-sfi/562207_420294_2362/
Soft brake line: ? - pull from a pathfinder I suppose or purchase a short Toyota line from AZ
will need to make/buy brackets and replace a few bolts but nothing major

I know a couple guys that have done this swap on 3rd gen 4runners like mine and are very happy with the results, should work great on a mini truck.

you used the GM MC if I remember correctly. You think it was the MC that helped or the deletion of the Anti-lock?

Really not sure Ted, doing both at the same time left it unanswered but I think the ABS was the biggest problem on mine.

What you goning to do for a parking brake? I don't have one either, but that's my big problem with rear discs.

Line lock most likely. never

line lock. never had any luck with the mechanical parking brake and haven't had one in 5 years.

So I get a text this morning addressed to "Dr. Tatar" asking if "Cabectomy" surgery begins today. As a matter of fact, Yes it does! :moon:

Who knew you could use one of these on a trail rig.

You guys gonna have that down to a half day job, start to finish, before too much longer. What's the plan for motor and trans? Both getting pulled for winter rebuild?

Not in a big hurry this time around so have not settled on the motor just yet, might just let it blow and figure it out from there.

Trans will be pulled and replaced. Kinda hoping I can make 1 good one from this one and the old one but not there yet. Fortunately I've had the 5.29s installed so 2nd gear is still pretty slow and we wheeled the piss out of it last weekend at AOP. That's coming to an end though, gotta get the front diff back to Steve here pretty soon.

Been undecided since before Moab but I'm going back to 4.10s for added strength and then installing triple cases with triple sticks. I've already started pulling parts together, picked up a 4.10 diff out of a 96 4-Runner last weekend which will be my new rear diff.

I know some of you are rolling your eyes right now but I do have legit reasons for choosing this route.

1) About the same cost as repairing my current 5.29 diffs w/ lockers +/- $850
2) Much bigger bang for the buck
3) 4.10s are stronger, cheaper, and easier to find
4) Already have a HP 4.10 diff in hand
5) Moving front drive shaft (double cardan) to back and will build a new front DS w/ standard U-joint. Might even be able to just swap drive shafts w/o issue.
6) just for the FU factor!!

Got the beginnings of the new exocage started this weekend. Same basic design so nothing new but will be braced far more than the last one. Pretty much tacked in place now but once I have added the roof tubing the entire assembly will be removed for final burn in. With my work load these days that may take a couple of weeks.

So for the lateral bracing below the windshield I'm still struggling. The goal is obvious but since I'm not a fan of having a tube above the hood the plan of action is not so obvious. Thought about going through the cowling above the firewall but there are a number of obstacles to include the windshield wiper mechanisms but the hood hinges have pretty much killed that idea. Now thinking about going through the engine bay but there's a lot going on in there too. What to do, what to do...

On another note, one of the side projects we have going on is building a new bed for Dave's 57 Willy's. The bumper may look a little familiar to some of you guys.

The rebuild is looking good. My only input on the cage, which I'm sure you've done, would be to browse the exo thread on pirate.

That side project is pretty sweet. Does/will it get wheeled or is it a general farm-type truck?

The exo thread is a good resource and I plan on steeling a few ides for the roof, for the cross brace just about everyone either goes over the hood or does without. I'm trying to be a little more creative than that.

Dave's truck is just a beat around the farm truck but I keep telling him how cool it would look on 40s. So far he's had the flat head 6 cylinder rebuild, new brakes, new floor pans and new bench seat. It's a project truck but really runs pretty good for what it is.

I'm on the hunt for an R150 trans if you guys see one out there, lemme know. Also, just got a quote back for a dual case adapter and 23 spline 2.28 input gear... $540 delivered, not bad.

I still have the R150 from my parts truck. Dunno how much shipping would be, but that's all it'd cost you. It was a daily driven truck before it had a cab fire, so the whole drivetrain besides the top of the engine is fine.

appreciate the offer. I think before I find a new one I'm gonna try to combine the 2 to make a good one. They can be found locally it's just a matter of timing it right.

I still gotta pull your diff and send that to you too, part of why I'm not going on the cove ride.

Looks like you've been having fun in the snow up there, wish i were there.

And just for fun, Looks like Grand Junction is getting snow...

Rain finally subsided enough that I could get something done. there's a grand total of 23 bends and I've been through 30+' of new tubing. At this point I'd call the exo about 85% done minus some gussets and additional bracing around the A pillars.

Cab finally got some paint on it too, 4 cans of flat white so that's finished.
