yeah it's been hotter than hell so the going is slow. We got the tranny and t-cases pulled 2 weeks ago, last weekend replaced the clutch, throwout bearing and pilot bearing so hopefully it should all go back together this weekend.

I plan/hope to hit a park up sometime b/w now and Sept. but I aint doin' it this 95* misery.

how was the shakedown at Durhamtown?

Good news. Nothing fell off at DT so I think that means my hack isn't too bad. The power steering is probably my favorite part. I'm interested in riding Aug/Sept so keep the board posted on plans.

tranny is in, new clutch and bearings are all in. Need a new slave cylinder for the clutch but I have 2 spares so that should be easy. After that on to the axles for maintenance work and relocating the rear shocks.

9 Weeks to Moab... schedule is getting tighter than I'm comfortable with.

For anyone ever looking for knuckle studs and nuts here are the part #s. Technically go to any solid axle mini truck as well as many others I'm sure.

I just go to Marlin's site and order them up. **easy**

I go to Front Range and order the ARP hard studs.

Yes agreed on ARP but still bring myself to drop $100 on 8 bolts especially since I'm still hoarding $$ away for my wife's cruise and my trip to Moab.

Besides, the studs were not the issue, the stripped stud hole turned out to be the issue so I ran a tap down through the hole and then tack welded in new stud in place. The studs are to be torqued to 21-40 ft/lbs in the knuckle and I've got at least that. That, and the new factory studs I put in 2 years ago are still holding with the assistance of the 5th stud mod so I think/hope I'm good.

Marlin is spotty on having things in stock so by the time I picked up 8 new studs and nuts it was cheaper, faster and guaranteed that i had them in hand.

If all that fails I'm going 6-shooter knuckles in the future.

well crap, Passenger's side. The more I dig the more broken crap I find. Need to stop digging.

this was a failure. Everytime I tighten down the nut the tack weld breaks and the stud spins. Getting damned tired of rebuilding knuckles so gonna tear down one more time and weld the piss outta the stud from the inside, after that it's replacement knuckle time. :bang:

Any you guys ever done the D44 knuckle stud mod? 9/16 vs 12MM but gotta buy a taper tool unless someone has one laying around...

For a long time Marlin had a set of knuckles already tapped for 9/16 in the "used parts" section.

Also, if you have time, maybe epoxy the threads upon installation, then wait a day or two for the welding.

@tkinze I have a mini truck axle, in parts in the barn, not sure what the ride will cost, but let me know and I will see about boxing it up for you. You can get it back to me when you upgrade, but it should get you to Moab at least.

While I'm sourcing a replacement knuckle I have to come up with a Plan B just in case I/we don't have one laying around. Given the hole won't hold the stud w/ a tack weld on the bottom I was thinking about beveling the top of the hole, kinda like this \ / (about 3/16" deep) to provide room for a weld on the stud on the top of the knuckle. A little risky I'll admit but not much to lose frankly.

Part of the biatch of a new knuckle is I have already done the 5th stud mod so will have to get that lined up perfectly. Shouldn't be a big deal but just one more thing to deal with.

Edit - Jynx posted first. Lemme see what I have down here first but maybe take ya up on it. will let ya know. thanks.

Not to butt in on Jynx's offer, but I also have a spare axle (out of an '85) that you could pilfer the knuckle from. I'm a little closer than TN, if you wanted to avoid the shipping.

Jynx wont mind, he's being helpful and is very appreciated. If nothing else a spare is a good thing to have, whatya' want fur it? Dave is on the other side of Athens and I can have him swing by while on his way to Buford one Saturday for me. Obviously, and this is unrelated, you're always invited to swing by yourself and hang out for shop time and have a few :beer:s.

Not sure if your interested, but I'd trade you help with a locker install / gear setup (I've got the parts just not the brain cells). Hoping to get this front ARB installed and I can't afford shop prices after my recent investments.

It would be fun to come by and turn some wrenches and pick up some tech. Let me know your shop schedule and I can either arrange to meet Dave on his way through Athens or attend in person.

For you Ted:

https://www.marlincrawler.com/discounted-parts/toyota-knuckles-916-top-holes

$175 for a pair of knuckles pre-drilled and tapped for 9/16 studs.

Just to put it over here and not clutter the the Moab thread.

So Marlin is nice e'nuff to sell their failed experiment (which begs another question) for the low low price for $175 which includes 2 ($25) knuckles pre-drilled and tapped and not enough hardware to finish the project. By the time I buy the remaining studs, cone washers, and build it out I'm getting close to 6 shooter knuckle hassle, but hey, at least they save me an hours worth of work. :(

If it weren't for this upcoming trip and other crud going on I'd order the 6 shooters for about 2x the money and be done forever but that ain't happening right now.

Locker - no sweat!!

Ring and pinion is outta my league, suggest taking it to CCOR there in Athens if nothing else. Only time I did a R&P setup it blew up in about 3 trail rides so better off spending $150-200 to pay someone. The last time I paid someone it cost me $100 cash but that was a bargain price.

@tgreco no sweat, I just got some junk laying around. I figured somebody down there had one, but thought I'd throw it out in case he got down to the wire.

Ted, that trans working ok? Just curious since I never ran it myself.
