Hey guys and gals. I am planning to hit the Great Sand Dunes on the way in on 8.1.26 Saturday. If anyone else wants to join they are welcome. I am looking to do the 4x4 trail that goes through the park.

I am looking to be there in the 9-10 am time frame.

I am currently going through all of them and will be building the presentation to be shown on a 100" screen using a laser projector. We are pretty thin on images from the early years, so if anyone is willing to do some digging, it would be much appreciated. We could also use more images from ANY year.

Enjoy the humidity! Probably last you’ll see for a week. We spent the night there on the way home last year, and was planning on coming back in that way, but at this point I think we’re meeting friends at Buena Vista Friday night and wheeling in from there.

ETA I thought it was a really fun ride through a very cool ecosystem.
NO desire to climb that hill on foot though.
Also some pretty cool history markers on the east end as you’re coming in.
Some very cool campsites all through.
 
Did you all hear that the area above the KOA is on fire? I just got an order to evacuate and I’m not sure why. Hopefully they get it out soon.

I texted Bill Leo to see how it's looking up there. He owned Ouray Mountain Sports for years and still lives there. Will let you know what I hear.
 
Just heard back from Jeff Smiddy at the KOA. It's less than three miles from them. He will keep us posted.
 
Says they may be evacuating shortly. Fingers crossed...
 
Looking at some stuff now. Watch Duty says 1 acre but that info isn’t updated. Mandatory evacs and photos show it burning from about Red Stone Road to above the ice rink just before town, about a two mile stretch. The northern end is two miles from the KOA and the southern end about 1.5 miles from town. Let’s hope the fire doesn’t jump around too much tonight and that the wind dies down tomorrow so they can get air support in there.
