I have a duality within me that wages war on itself. I simultaneously admit to being a pack rat and at the same time admit to harboring keen dislike of hoarders of good parts. What I mean by that is I have a habit of seeing value in all random bits of LC randomness, often times planting the seeds of my 5th or 6th next project based on a couple good used parts. The other side of said duality is a loathing of those who snatch up and stockpile "stuff" without a clear need or purpose for it. I have seen this much more in the 40 and 60 Series side of things, but I digress. To cut to the chase...I have this 1FZ-FE and A343 that I pulled out of my 1996 80 that this project is based on. I had planned to rebuild it as a fun project with the intent of slapping it in another 80, maybe one with a blown engine and thus purchased right, but when I think about the fact that I already have a 5.3 Vortec in a crate waiting for a project...why occupy value storage space with this one. So, it is with all that in mind that I have chosen to pass the take engine/tranny on.
What is included? The rig has 338,000 miles on the clock and was dealer maintained past the 280,000 mile mark. After that, I don't know, but I am pretty sure this is the original engine and tranny. The pan has been resealed at some point and I have not dropped it to measure the bottom end clearances. I have not plans to crack the pair open as all my resources are going into the diesel swap to try and get most of the way there ahead of the heat arriving. The 1FZ, never smoked, doesnt seem to burn any oil, always started right up, and has good power. IT does have an oil pump that leaks like a Harley Davidson, which is why a drip pan of Oilsorb lived under it when parked. So what are my simple thoughts? I think this is an excellent rebuild candidate. It is tired, but is in otherwise great shape as a 100% viable core. NOTE: I have removed the harness and AC compressor, which I need for parts of my swap. That adds to the "good running core" classification I have given it. If you wanted to rebuild or replace the oil pump, I bet it could go in another 80 as is and run for a long time.
