If you've ever had a project go sideways after selecting a lower cost sub contractor, you'll know that sometimes paying more is worth it in the long run.

And this is where I was at. I took up the attitude that i do not want, and if done right, I will never have to worry about mitigating tin worm again on this 40. I'm still not going to be driving it in salt and winter slop, so it should be usable until I'm not, and after that I don't care

Not to hijack his post but what are the downsides to Aqualu tubs besides upfront cost? Just curious as I’ve seen a lot of positive posts, just wondering if there’s any downside to think through.
If you are going to go the route of aquala dont dick around with the rear half.....get tub and cowl and replace the whole tub....you eliminate the issues associated with trying to mate the original cowl to an aluminum 3/4 tub

Downside is the end product can vary a huge amount in how it looks depending on how and who installs it. If some extra effort is put in it can look factory. If the install is botched it can look poor.

I debated doing an Aqualu tub for a long time on my old 40. I ultimately sold the truck but I did see one in person and I remember getting the hard top to fit took some custom work due to the rear bracing in the corners. Your truck looks pretty good, you can definitely see the paint line on the rocker panel where it some rust repair was made. I would assume that is full of bondo. If it was mine I would get to work on preserving it and enjoy it for what it is, after you get to know the 40 you can decide on a long term plan.

Full on AQ tub. The only thing original is the hood. Factory HT mod in place and shown in the pre-paint mockup. Shop went the extra mile with the details to mimic factory seams.

It’s a trade off, no rust vice original. I’ve been called “Chunga the defiler” and this is just my opinion but, if 100% originality is your goal, stay the course with your preservation/resto. If you’re inclined to look at an AQ solution, it’s money well spent.

Hit me with a DM and I can talk with you on the AQ expectation management paradigm.

It wouldnt be worth 50k after the work was done....

If you spend $200,000.00 or more, it'll be worth that $50k no problem. 😆

I inquired about a dentside I saw on Instagram the other day from a builder in Arizona. $300-400k with paint. Lots of variables though.
Considering if you spend $100k on a new F350, you get a complete hunk of garbage and a bad attitude from the dealership when you bring it back in for warranty. $300k kinda seems like a bargain if its done right. Especially if you're worried you might snap and murder everyone in the service department. You'll spend at least half that on a lawyer.

Do you want it done fast and complete, or are you okay with doing a bit at a time? I park my rig every winter (salt) and do some small projects. This allows me to keep it on the road and not spend too much money at once. Last winter I did a 5 speed swap, this winter is ambulance door rust repair and going through the cooling system.

@BBradford you can see the replies you’ve got here. Easy to see no shortage of guys willing to share thoughts and opinions. You have your biggest obstacle completely done…you’ve got your 40. As you did mention..get to know it drive it and see what direction you think you’re going. Once you start tinkering, if your like most here, you’ll enjoy starting to fix little things.

No vaccine for FJ40’s…once you’ve got the bug, it takes a long long time to go away. I was bitten in 1974…still can’t shake it. Keep posting and ask away. You’ve got 4 pages of replies already on 1 question..👏

^^^ Beautiful truck. If I decide to go full restoration, I will reach out to you to learn more about AQ Tubs. Thanks.

I’m ok with doing a bit at a time, assuming I can get the rust under control. I’ll take the next year to do some smaller projects and figure out where I want to go with this truck … continue to take my time doing small projects, or find someone to do a full restoration.

‘No vaccine’ is right … I fell hard when I bought mine.

I’m blown away by the helpfulness of the Forum. Much appreciated.

@BBradford ... listen to @bobm

He's in your neck of the woods and knows his business.

bobm... as soon as it gets a bit warmer... the piggy is getting some love!

Do what you are comfortable with and don’t be afraid to try something (or learn how to do something). I am fairly new to the forum and to FJ40’s but I have taken the time to research various things related to same. Our rear sill was much worse than yours and I did the replacement by myself in the garage, with help from the ih8mud community along with family members that know a thing or two about welding /fabrication. Bought a welder and learned. I think it came out pretty good. You can do it if you want to, just depends what your situation is. Although I do make a better grinder than a welder!!
