Truck started acting up a couple of days ago, but managed to limp into Boise, my destination, 1500 miles from home. Suspected the kick down cable based on the symptoms, shuddering and difficulty getting going without nursing the skinny pedal. Climbed into the engine bay To find it is too late for that. The end has broken off. Since all the references point to the part being discontinued, can anyone sujggest a field fix or non-OEM alternatives. I believethepartnumberneededis 35520 60140. Based on prevjious discussion here, that # may have been superseded. Or could a bike cable be substituted? So far from home, I could use a little help here.

If you are in Idaho I would reach out to @Delta VS There might be others out there that could help but at least Delta might be able to point you in the right direction.

from what I understand @cruiseroutfit might have one or two of these sitting on a shelf somewhere. you are welcome to have him send it to our shop and use our parking lot, if needed. if he doesn't have one, we might have a used one in questionable shape buried.

Thanks, fellows. Looks like a solution is at hand. I dropped a note to Cruisers and Company to send a cable to Delta VS today ASAP and expect a call from them to cover costs sometime today. Depending on how fast the Pony Express is, hoping to struggle the truck across town to Delta VS and do the fix, then be on my way to Utah to drop by Cruisers Outfitters and visit the Land Cruiser Museum then head for the boonies. MUD continues to be a great resource for these classic rigs!

If both ends of the cable are present, some wire and wire crimps might work. A bicycle brake or derailleur cable might be a field expedient repair. You can make one custom with some wire and a stopper (melt lead sinkers or decoy weights into a cylindrical mold, like a drilled out nut).

Great tips for a field repair.itwasacleanbreakrightattheend, somaybeenough slack for that to work.

However, I was lucky enough to score the last cable that C&C had on hand and it will be at Delta VS tomorrow, so hoping to be on my way to Utah sometime late on Wed.

It does. I did it on my '95 a couple of months back. I chose to use one of the cork gaskets rather than the FIPG which would keep things simple if the cable install didn't work out and i had to drop the pan again but everything worked perfectly and the cork gasket is sealing perfectly. I might be tempted to leave it there.

Cork will seal, but for nowhere near as long as FIPG will.

Yeah, the FSM shows the way and it includes a seemingly casual reference that leads to dropping the pan. But I would worry endlesslly about the field repair if itt came to that do a new cable ASAP. As is pan is down and cable is out for delivery.
