Thanks again Zach! You've been a real trooper explaining all the details of the rig and answering all my ridiculous and tedious questions over the last week or so since its arrival in CO.
No disappointments with the rig setup. Zach was excellent to work with during the transaction and definitely invested in all the right parts for the rig. No expense spared and I will continue this policy through the rest of the build.
I've had a chance to walk through the 60 and get a quick list of items that will be addressed and finished before hitting the trail. Going to be a busy winter! No particular order to the work as of yet. I'm all about the "To Do" list and thought I would share with everyone during the process to continue the build thread. Here goes!
Immediate dyno tune by The Carb Shop in Denver. They have dyno'd trucks up to 46" MT Baja Claws. Pretty cool setup they have and direct experience with the Powerjection III setup. Before doing this I am adding in a catylitic converter to the exhaust and extending the muffler to dump further back on the rig. The current setup allows for fumes to get in the cab.
0) Wheel spacers: on full turn with steering bumps all the way out the tires rub the links. According to my measurement a 2" spacer will take care of this. Temporary fix until I can look into getting the re-centered H1's re-re-centered to a better BS.
1) Rear track bar: just from tooling around with a mediocre tune there is evidence of axle wrap.
2) Wiring harness: kind of a nightmare. Combination of stock Toyota harness, SBC harness and the new BBC harness. Going to strip it down to the bare essentials for the current setup. Salvage as much as I can and redo some of it for a clean, organized and practical setup. I'm a nut about having an organized wiring harness in my rigs....
3) Trade front ARB for Detroit: this is still up in the air BUT there is a good chance I will be swapping the ARB for a Detroit up front. Not going to be driving it on the road. I won't have to worry about the ARB compressor or lines failing/leaking/melting/etc on the trail. One less thing to be concerned about.
4) New brake lines: there is about a 50/50 mix of good and bad brake line routing and bends. Stopping power and pressure is great but the lines are ran in some funky spots and rushed through.
5) Internal Cage: full internal tied into the frame. Going to work into the rear fuel cell rack and shock mounts. Adding at least one more frame tie on each side to the rear cell rack for added strength. Also tied into frame at A and B pillars. Hip bar incorporation for added rigidity and protection when doors are off. Front seat mounting rack and brackets will be tied into cage.
6) Front drive flange swap: current setup is great BUT I already have the Solid Axle Industries D60 slugs sitting in my garage from a previous D60 build. The SAI also eliminates any issue with the dust cap from coming off and dirt/grime getting into the hub.
7) Headlights: can't see s*** at night in this thing. Typical FJ60 dim headlights.
8) Rock lights: obvious for night wheeling trips
9) D70 rear disc brake conversion: anyone know of a quality all inclusive kit for this?
10) Cut off existing sliders
11) Relocate batteries to rear: probably going to eliminate dual battery setup and just run one battery. Relocating to rear for added space in engine bay. It's pretty cramped in there right now and this will free up some space. The stock and aftermarket battery trays are shot anyways.
12) Finish/redo interior paint/liner: stripping out old sound deadening material that was painted over and applying a couple coats of course black Grizzly Grip. Headliner sags in rear and needs repair.
13) Finish belly skid plates: mounting bolts for t-case or exposed to elements and will be sheared off with a rock. Might stick with Zach's idea of adding the "cutting board" plastic stuff to it (don't know the actual name of it - if anyone does, let me know b/c I want to get a larger piece of it). There is also an additional idea for protecting the exposed bolts detailed below.
14) Lots of bolts missing and/or not installed in certain areas (ie. not all cross member bolts are installed, etc.)
15) Verify torque specs on everything.
16) Swap EFI/fuel pumps: the Powerjection III complete kit comes with VERY noisy pumps. There are some pumps that can be swapped in to eliminate the noise. I just need to do some research to find the appropriate one. Damn they are loud...really loud.
17) Repair/replace hood latch: the damn thing doesn't want to work all the time. Is this a common occurrence with the 60? Is there an aftermarket one that works better? Or eliminate it completely with some sweet ass hood pins.
18) New sliders: going to incorporate/tie into the internal cage. Need to do some additional measuring but I also have to desire to boat side a bit. Have an idea to have a removable skid plate that runs underneath the t-case cross member and ties into the sliders. Will completely flatten the belly and eliminate the need for me to add the cutting board stuff to the exposed t-case mounting bolts on the cross member. Idea would only lose about an inch of overall belly clearance BUT would make up for it based on the fact it will be completely flat.
19) Front bumper: stinger style with winch mount. Radiator hoop with stinger similar to the Metal Tech nose guard and stinger setup. Had it on my old 40 and really liked the look and practicality. Obviously it will need larger dimensions than the 40 dimensions. Need to draw it up on photoshop to make sure it won't look goofy on the 60 profile. Front section of frame to be boxed off and reinforced.
20) Rear bumper: going clean and simple with it. No spare tire mount or any of the other BS hanging off the back. Rear section of frame will be boxed and reinforced.
21) Storage rack: mounted on top of fuel cell and integrated into the internal cage. Also going to integrate fuel cell filling nozzle for easier filling when rack is loaded with gear. Will be removable.
22) Bump stops: Zach provided nitrogen bump stops and cans with the truck that haven't been installed. Need to take some measurements and install them on the front. Also need to take measurements and install rear bump stops.
23) Limiting straps
24) Stereo system: tunes are mandatory on the trail! Will be looking for some marine-type speakers mounted to the cage. No door speakers so when the doors are removed it doesn't hamper the system.
25) Overflow reservoir for radiator: needs to be replaced and upgraded. I believe it's the stock 60 reservoir being used. It leaks from the cap and spills out. Also going to be relocated when the battery gets relocated to rear of truck.
26) OBA System: Zach provided two different York compressors with the truck. They definitely need to be cleaned up and rebuilt. Due to the limited space up front, I will be scratching the idea of running a York. So that leaves two options: a VIAir type setup with tank OR Powertank-type setup. I currently have a VIAir setup in my LX450. It's good but is quite under powered for filling tires at or over 37". Im sure if i added an additional or larger compressor it would not take so long. Not as practical as I thought it would be when I purchased it. So I guess that finalizes my choice! Powertank-type setup. Probably incorporate some brackets for it along the internal cage.
27) Adjust gas pedal: currently restricted due to a stopper setup put in place to avoid over throttling the new motor/EFI, I guess...
28) Fix line lock: lines are ran and the locking switch is through the floor on the left side of the driver seat. Functional but the mounting has not been finishing. Brake lines on driver side are free floating along the frame rail. Doh!
29) Interior lighting: currently there really isn't any. Going to get some LED's and incorporate on/off switch somewhere on the driver side dash.
30) Fuel line placement: everything is high quality. Lines and fittings are top notch, high quality. Need to clean them up with additional mounting hardware and secure them in some locations. Some of the lines were cut a bit too long and need to be shortened.
31) Triple stick shifter boot: needs to be mounted. Free floating around shifters right now. Linkage may also need a bit of adjusting.
32) Reid Knuckles: have a brand new set from previous D60 build. Going to upgrade the stock knuckles.
33) Artec high steer arms: upgrade the current high steer arms. The Artec arms are springless and have an additional stud.
34) Misc body work: nothing major b/c it's going to get thrashed anyways. Front and rear wheel wells need a lot of additional trimming, grinding and clearancing. Been tossing around the idea of completely "comp" cutting the rear and installing aftermarket, smaller LED tail lights.
35) Misc cutting and grinding: prime example are the front leaf spring hangers, random brackets on frame that haven't been removed, etc.
Thats about it...for now. As with any project, new items will arise as you move along. Have long term plans for it that include less body but this list is about all I can handle for one fall/winter. Hope to have all of these done by March/April for a shakedown run.
I'm open to creative suggestions on the build.
Have some other things going on for the next 2 weeks and then will be tearing into her! As always, more details to follow!
