With the radio mounting complete, I could then continue with the wiring. Since I reused the existing (lousy) 4 speaker system, it was a wire for wire change onto the new harness supplied with the radio. Wishing to be able to re-configure, add or delete 12v connections in the future, I made the 3 new power and ground connections to the radio and power tap using wire nuts instead of solder/crimp connections. I know some of you will have a reaction to my choice of connections, but please. These are electrical, not electronic connections!

In summation, I am pleased with the installation. While in general I am not a gadget freak, and generally don’t like to see do-dads and gadgets installed in my or other trucks, building a complete working 12v system in my truck was a valuable and worthwhile project. I have not hooked up the GPS or Ipod yet, but I don’t expect any troubles. The radio works well and is clearly demonstrating the deficiencies in the speakers!

My next projects then are to replace the speakers. I will also be building storage panels in the quarter panels and tail gate. I’ll be posting more after I source more materials (read: budget recovery period). Cheers everyone!

Mark, That's a great idea!!! I would be very happy to be yours and everyone's Costa Rica vacation connection!

My life passions are surfing and off road adventures. When I can combine the two I am in heaven! I learned to travel in self sustained fashion years ago down in Baja. Living here is a continuation of the adventure! I am happy to share the fun with all!

What constitutes a vacation in your opinion? Are you after down time in the hammock with a beer and a book or would you like to bounce around the back country? Both?

Rick

Ok... so I come down with my wife and my 4 kids (15, 13, 10 and 7). They have a place to hang out, be at the beach, in the water and in the shade (at various times). We have someone or someplace to supply/cook lunch and dinner... we have facilities to have some of our own food/drinks (small kitchen and refridgerator).

I/we get to explore (the more 4wd needed the better). I want to have the opportunity to photograph and explore at a leisurely pace. Maybe spend a night here and there away from "home". Local color is a plus. Nightlife is not necessary. Someone to keep an eye on the kids while the wife and I relax, explore, sleep for a few hours each day would be grand....

Nice...

The internet connection is not consistent, but I am very happy for what there is. Is the same in Panama?

Rick

Well .. I can't answer this question .. here in the City off course it's excelent, but dunno if in the " interior " are the same ..

In Chirquí it's good enought to have E1 as same as here in the City ..

woytovich nailed my vacation, except I only have 2 kids (8, 6, 2) Other than that, I'll take the package he gets. The wife wants to go on vacation this year anyway (I think she's thinking Disneyland...)

Great writeup! Way to go on representing Costa Rica in the ROTM. *Almost* makes me want to keep the 60 and sell the 80, but the 80.

x2 on what Rick says about 80 being much more difficult to maintain here than a 60. I'm in a less isolated area (read: I have 2 Toyota branches within an hour of me, he has one, sorta) but recently ran into a major problem when I tried to order an "exotic" part from Toyota. Knuckle stud nuts are only a 30-day item. That's a part that is common to every cruiser from ... what, 1950-something through 1999? Just imagine what it is like trying to get a more esoteric electrical doodad.

And, electrical work sucks (IMNSHO).

I saw Rick's awesome Lark project in person, I've got to assume the 60 is also very nicely done.

Great area-shots, too. Hope to get down your way, pronto!

How are the thing up there with the earthquake .. ?

It has affected the entire country, even outside the area of damage. There is a week of mourning, delaying the commencement of many fiestas in all the country. Currently there are fund raisings and donation drives happening, to help the affected famalies.

I am surprised and proud of the high level of organization, volunteerism and participation of this country. People are donating their time, money and resources at an amazing level. It is an experience to be part of the community involved in making solutions.

Best regards,

Rick

Rick, great to see you have Red completed!

It was great to run into you guys this summer. Congrats on the two new additions.
:D:D:D

And I must add that Rick and wife were wonderful hosts to us when we dropped by in April. (I need to go back!)

BTW the cliffs were super fun today-although the water wasn't as warm...

Rob! Great to hear from you! Happy new year man! Yeah, I guess the cliffs have not been providing this winter, our section of the coast has been quiet as well.

Thanks for the kind word and wishes, hope there's good things for you and your family in 2009.

Cheers,
Rick
