I have a pesky internal leak between my trans a transfer case in which the transfer case pushes fluid into the transmission. I ordered a nice bypass hose but unfortunately its not going to get here in time for my trip so I made this today to get me by.

That's what I have and it has worked a treat for seven years. I bought a fancy one in Australia but have yet to chuck it on.

You going through New Mexico this time?

Beautiful drive down here from Silverton (Silverton is one of my favourite towns) - you could go through Pagosa Springs and relax in the hot springs for a day and then head down to Santa Fe. I'd love to catch up for a beer on your way through.... unless you decide to turn around 20 miles away again of course.

I bought the fuel tank from man-a-fre. As far as fuel consumption the best I got was 21mpg with 31" tires but I will be the first to admit I don't watch my speed as in I drive at whatever the engine doesn't sound like its over revving at. With 33" tires it got 19mpg running 75-83 mph. With the 33" tires it is underpowered. I'm hoping with the regear and the turbo I should achieve 21-24 mpg at 75mph.

What is the Diff are you running. Normally the FJ40 comes with 3.70s and BJ40 comes with 4.10

3.70 offer better highway speeds than a 4.10, and better millage too. As far as the offroad is concerned! with a 3B it is a compromise. As now you are turbo charging the 3B motor you stick with 3.70s

earlier model years of FJ40s in the US came with 4.11s

Got my oil pan and side cover back from powder coating and apparently the powder coater got the powder mixed up. Instead of a dark gray it came out a very light gray but since it didnt cost me anything anyway i think i can live with that :)
At this point its crunch time, wednesday 7pm i need to put the pan on, side cover install the turbo and all associated plumbing, get an exhaust made and pack for the trip. (leaving friday after work).

by this point it was 11pm and sealer for the oil pan and side cover was pretty dry so i couldnt resist to dump the oil in it and take it for a spin :) Its surprisingly quiet with the 6'' of exhaust it has. no leaks and no abnormal noises so muffler shop today and im going to wrap the down pipe with exhaust wrap this evening.

And the grunt? Are you happy with the low end power?

You'll find you won't need a muffler; my turbo 2h never had one and was never loud.

im happy with the power. im still not used to the 3.70s considering i only put about 25 miles on them before i took it apart for the turbo. But it pulled the steepest hill in town on the way home last night at 60mph while before it would drop down to 35-40mph.

trip Report

We are expecting a trip report with lots of pictures. Your taking a vaction most of us can't. Enjoy the ride in a short wheel base. That has to be a rough ride going across country. What speed can you cruise at with that diesel and the five speed?

last trip with the 33'' tires and 4.11 i could cruise @ 75 comfortably. with the 3.70s in there it should cruise along nicely @ 80..i think. Once i get 100+lbs of tools and 80lbs of gear it doesnt ride too rough. Especially with 30 gallons of diesel on board. Will do on the pictures!

sweet stuff there, Roma!

May have missed it, but how's your itinerary shaping up for the next trip? Leaving anytime soon? The oldest and I will be running trails between Buena Vista and Ouray for a week, starting next Sunday!!! More details in my sig if you'll be in the neighborhood.

I should be coming through there toward the end of this week.

Ran over a deer last night in mississippi running 70 mph.

Got into Memphis around midnight and got a room.

Glad I had 33" tires
Egt gauge I threw in at the last minute.

Got an early start this morning hoping to get out of the dreadful heat I knew the day would bring. Had an excellent breakfast at the Hampton inn before hitting the road at 6:45. The Garmin decided to take me through rural Arkansas at which point I began questioning its judgement. Figured I'd check my trusty road atlas and what do you know I left it at home. Following Garmin I came to a little town called Mammoth Springs.
