Ok, so we are getting near the 22RE death part of the story. So I had been driving the rig to and from work every couple weeks since July leading up to KOH because I wanted to see if I had any cooling issues or anything in general. It's 30 miles each way and about 1200 feet of elevation gain from my work. I had noticed that this particular 22RE felt weak. I had my previous 22RE 4runner when my DD was a 4 cylinder Ford Ranger and now days I have a 5th Gen Ram Cummins. So I kind of thought "ahh, you've just become power spoiled, this is back to the old 4 cylinder life".

Then I noticed I was burning oil at a decent rate. Meeeehhhh, 22REs do that!

Then I noticed the oil sneeze mark on the side of my house where I idle the truck... LOL. This is when I started doing some serious 3RZ research and planning my exit. Man, they are kind of difficult to find now days it seems though. Toyota prices are what they are, and these aren't a super wide spread engine. But I was pretty damn set on keeping 4 Cylinder weight since I just tuned the whole rig around that weight and I really am a fan of keeping it light.

My whole crew runs on one tons and 40"+ tires. They are all 5800lbs on up to 8200lbs for one of the full size guys. I kind of dig being the odd one out and having to pick my own lines and completely think from a different angle. So I am fairly set on the 3RZ at this point.

In late Feb, I went on a quick snow run up Ice House road. It was pretty fun and the truck did excellently with the snow conditions. This further convinced me of keeping the weight the same with a 3RZ and potentially upping to 37x13.5 tires. The increased power and contact patch would be really nice. I also definitely noticed when pulling the grade out of Placerville and coming back up the grade going West from Fresh Pond towards Pollock Pines that I was dying in regard to engine power. I was dropped into 3rd gear and barely holding it in the power band. Temp gauge showed good and I was being stubborn...

IMG_0978.jpg

On the temp gauge - I had suspicions of it potentially being bad since I have seen it pop up into the warm zone curiously fast when warming up. A few weeks prior to this I had ordered a new temp sender and both ohmed out the same, so I didn't replace it yet. Failure mode #1.

We got all that good snow and on March 3rd I really wanted to hit it. A buddy was heading up and I said I'd meet him up there. When pulling that grade out of Placerville I was seriously dying for power. I started to look for exits, but there were none. It was that section along Apple Hill Cafe to Camino where there is the median and the massive snow year left a snow bank. Honestly, I wasn't going to stop and clog up a lane and have people bombing 60 MPH by us. I am not trying to get killed by someone texting and plowing into us, so I decided to hammer it to the Exxon at Camino where there was a safe exit. Temp gauge was still showing good, but I was struggling in 2nd gear to get there. My buddy behind me radios me and goes "Holy s*** dude, I smell so much oil my eyes are burning and the heat ploom coming of of your exhaust is about 4ft long!" I immediately grab for my fire extinguisher, get it handy, and radio him telling him to be ready with his.

So the basic story is that She's fried. 😥 A buddy came with his trailer to get me which was awesome. 🍻 The 22re had enough power to barely pull up the trailer and then again barely to pull up my steep driveway and onto my side yard. I honestly was not that sad. I was more thankful I didn't burn it to the ground and also that it still had power to pull up my driveway where I am doing the engine swap.

I really would have liked to be able to wheel the 22RE through the summer and do the swap in the off season, but whatever! Gotta roll with it!

Next up is finding a donor. I had been watching pretty hard through February and getting frustrated. I started exploring copart and finding and auction one, but also getting frustrated with the prices, fees, brokers, blah blah blah.

I saw this crashed one for sale in Southern Oregon. The guy said he would meet me in Redding, so I was in. It is a 1998 that was claimed to have 197,xxx miles and ran strong. I met up, check it over, and ran it around the parking lot. The cat had been stolen so it sounds like ass, but it ran fine aside from a loose battery cable giving a false sputter. I considered doing a compression test, but my plan is to rebuild it anyways, so I wasn't too concerned and just needed a good core and donor for all the other crap I need.

My in-laws live 1/2 mile away and were cool enough to let me dismantle this thing on their side yard. It's gravel, so that brings its own challenges, but again, GOTTA ROLL WITH IT!

IMG_1341.jpg

After a few rounds of soapy water, hose, degrease it was cleaned up to work on. This thing was definitely owned by an interesting character. I found rolling papers, a tongue ring, and an SKS stripper clip in the cab.

My intent is to probably run a super charger on this. I really don't want to worry about any problems. Before pulling it, just for curiosity and to know what I needed to pay particular attention to during tear down and rebuild, I did a compression test. I believe spec is 178psi factory and 125 psi minimum. So it's somewhere in the middle of decent health. Cylinder 1 rings might be on their way out?

Always cool to investigate how these engines hold up after 25 years of use.

So the next update inline chronologically would basically be post #1. Pulled the engine, got it to my house, and on the stand.

The 3RZ water pump joke cracked me up to see in person. Why change a design proven by the test of time?

As of this weekend, I got it fully broken down and the block and head are ready for the machine shop. It will be dropped off this week.

Nothing I saw in the tear down looked like anything of concern. Head gasket was good. I'm pretty confident that this thing would have ran just fine for a long time if I left it stock and just threw it in. I really do wish I had two of these engines, as I would love to have just thrown this one in and rebuilt one on the side at a leisurely pace. But you're seeing a theme here- JUST GOTTA ROLL WITH IT.

We are at present day in the saga and now the updates will come much more slowly as you see the reality of the pace I work at :flipoff2:

Suggestion. I would have taken the cylinder head to the machine shop with the camshafts and lifters. Those shims will need to be machined for proper valve lash and the machine shop should know what to do.

Good thought. I intended to put them back on there. Had to remove cams to get to the head bolts.

Hopefully drop it off tomorrow or Friday.

Great read, thanks for posting.
The 3rz is a very stout motor, and as long as the valves are adjusted periodically, they can last a long time.
My swap thread relates to the later coil on plug 3rz as far as wiring but it may be helpful otherwise.

That’s a great thread you made! I have it book marked along with some of the other ones like gnob’s blue truck. I am sure I will be asking you guys some questions once I get into the trenches in actually mounting this thing.

I have a FSM on the way in the mail for the engine rebuild. I have been thinking it over and may just break down and buy the ORS wiring harness. Having a 3 year old, and another on the way, time is pretty limited in life. It’ll be much more limited in November when the kid is due. I’m not fully set on the ORS route, but I think I am better off spending the dough and just moving into the next task and getting this done asap.

Can’t wait to be wheeling again!

Weekend progress:

Dropped head, block, pistons, and crank at the machine shop on Friday.

Saturday the 3RZ FSM arrived. These things aren’t cheap now days.. if anyone has a section they need and can’t find online, let me know.

Sunday scrubbing. Trying to decide what I want to paint and which colors. I’d love to have the valve cover power coated, but I don’t want to pay for it. So it’s not happening.

Well, I went powder. Gunmetal gray.

I saw that! I am probably ripping you off in the poor man version of gray - rattle can. Ultimately mine is a trail rig, and lets be real, the body isn't a show vehicle. Powder coated parts in a red engine bay with rattle can green body that has trail cellulitis would be a funny move.

Oh and the 3RZ stickers came in from you. So definitely ripping you off if I stick to gray hahhaha. Who knows though. I may impulse another color.

What's this I hear about 3rz stickers?? @pappy

Yeah, if only swaps were that easy.

I know someone who needs that PS pulley if the RE is going to the scrap gods.

I’m going to part out what is still good from the 22re to try to recoup some of the cost of this swap. Probably not going to sell anything off until I am passed the BAR part of the swap though. I’ll post in here when it’s all up for grabs.

LCE rebuild and extras showed up today, but they forgot the pistons! Block is done, but need to drop some of this stuff off at the machine shop… including pistons…

Anyone have any input on these questions I posted earlier during the flurry of my posts?

Spare axle housing with loose knuckle ball race-- The outer race is loose enough to just slip in and fall out with a little play. Machinist to fix it the only real solution?
So I had this extra axle housing. I intended to use this one since it had a top truss, but when I went to put in the trunion races, 3/4 went in well, and the 4th would slip in and out with some play to spare. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not entirely sure what is a decent fix is.

Rear Detroit question. I am starting to think about how much the banging when coming off the clutch was annoying with a dying 22RE. A fresh 3RZ is going to feel terrible. Swap so the detroit is up front/ARB rear and hope the detroit isn't annoying locking on me in the rocks? I'm more worried about it locking in the snow and being a nightmare.
Forgot that at some point in Sept 2022, before the axle push/steering box relocation, I swapped the detroit V6 rear in. I have mixed feelings about it. It's better than a spool, but god damn is the slack in that thing annoying. It seems like it gets 1/4 turn of the pinion before power is transmitted to the shafts. On road, this makes a big old thump if you don't smooth it out by using more clutch than I like to use.

It was cheaper than buying another ARB because I had the carrier.. Still considering swapping the detroit to the front and the ARB to the rear. Any thoughts, anyone? Anyone still following?😆
