when folded up, are the insides weather proof? could you leave bedding inside folded up and not worry about mold?

I leave my pillows and bedding and clothes in mine all the time. The only thing you would wont to do is make sure everything is dry before putting it a way for any length of time.

Just thought I would add a little problem on my Moombasa/CarTopTent unit that I picked up on the special deal here.

While I still love the tent, I about lost the entire thing. On the last trip my wife and I went on, I hit about 10 miles of washboard. For some reason, I decided to stop and check out my trailer and make sure the tailgate was still up. The tailgate was, but my Moombasa was just about off of the trailer.

ALL OF THE MOUNTS underneath had POPPED OFF. The three small rivets on each mount simply sheared off. My tent was just about 10 seconds from being left behind on the trail. I was able to ratchet-strap her down, and use the same straps at camp, but it was still a pain in the ass. Also, my cover looks like hell. I haven't used the thing that much and only had the tent out in the elements for a month or two and it is BRIGHT PINK from oxidation.

Anyway, my point of this thread was to warn the other CarTopTent/Moombasa owners of the mounts. I fixed the problem with some MUCH heavier duty rivets and a gnarly rivet gun.

good info. I have been meaning to change out those rivets for bolts witha backing plate but could not decide whether to change the whole mounting system for something stronger.

That was my thought too. Then, when I went to go and install said backing plate, I learned that the bottom is actually two aluminum panels and it is hollow. One would have to remove the outside or inside panel to gain access to this hollow area which I thought would be a huge headache so I opted for larger rivets. Hope they hold.

IMHO the stronger rivets should work fine. Save the time and effort for something else.

My dealer sheered off the ladder and mounts last year exiting the shop. I fixed it up with new rivets and just 2 weeks ago, I was out on a trail and hit some dips a little too quick in hopes of cleaning out my BFG AT KOs. Well I hopped the front end of the truck pretty hard and heard a loud bang up on the roof. Upon further inspection, the aftermarket Proline roof loadbars were the part that failed this time. All of my new rivets held.

a quick question about cold weather camping. the earlier model rtt was thin and didn't hold in any heat and was basically a two season tent (i read that somewhere earlier in this thread), so does anyone have any experience with the new model and cold weather?

How cold? We camped in SE Utah and IIRC the temps got down to the mid 30's Its nothing a good sleeping bag cant help, It was only windy no real rain or snow.
HTH :D

sometimes it gets down in the teens, but usually low 30's. our camping spot is on the ms river and the wind is what makes it so cold. i know it would be warmer if i wasn't right on the river, but when you wake up to the view it makes it worth it.......whether you got any sleep or not.

Since there are some mentions of 'other' tents, I thought I'd throw in my experience with mine. I installed a Maggiolina Extreme over a year ago and have nothing but praise for it. It goes up easily, packs away easily. The mattress is exceptionally good. It's a little too much like a coffin inside with the upholstery on the roof, but the 12V dome light is a nice touch. The sides are tight when the roof is up and even the strongest cold winds don't come through or flap. No condensation on the hardware dripping on you when you sleep like the Hannibal I had years ago... although the Hannibal had some good points.
Down side to these- the US distributor sucks. They are impossible to deal with, sent the wrong awnings and never would pick up the wrong parts (I ended up throwing away $1K of their junk because it was in my way and didn't fit.) The tent is great, once you get past dealing with the people involved.

Traded off the Overland King for the Maggiolina GT Medium. Broke it in last weekend for ab & uni fest on the NorCal coast. No regrets so far!

I'm very impressed by the rug....

Its a special rug. We're very proud of our special rug. It doesn't always get used in camp...but when it does: Look out.

That dang thing gets me more press than the trailer, tent, awning, etc. :flipoff2:

Spressoman, I think I saw you post a picture of the rug before in another thread. I now have a rug like that for camping. My renter left it when they skipped out on the rent...doh.

Group Buy?

I know this is an old thread, but it there is a lot of great info here.

Looks like the group buy for the older model RTT happened in 8/06 or so. Any word on another group buy for the newer model? I am planning on building a trailer soon to tow behind the 40 (like wildyoats) and would love to get one of these mounted on it. The easy set up, off the dirt, etc. would make it MUCH easier to convince the wife to go out camping more often.

Mike, There might be some older Mombasa tents floating around SLC, Chat with Kurt @ Cruiseroutfitters.

The only reason I can remember the group buy is due to a newer model coming out, I dont see another group buy like what we had for some time.
Good luck

They also pop up for sale a good bit here on 'Mud. Keep an eye out for a few weeks and you'll find one. I have really enjoyed mine, for what it's worth.

I won the ARB Roof Top Tent that was raffled of during Cruise Moab '08. It was donated by Hugh at Safari Ltd. (Thanks Hugh!) :D

I finally got a chance to test it out last weekend here in Colorado. I mounted it on my stock '85 FJ60 using three Yakima bars. It fits my 60 well and I was able to mount it up on the roof by myself using a little ingenuity, 2 2x4's and a hill. ;)

My wife and I went camping South of the Collegiate Peaks and took the 60 on some mild trails and forest roads and found a great campsite near a stream and lake. Set up the tent and all our gear in about 20 minutes (should be faster next time) and we slept in perfect comfort.

The ARB tent materials seem very well made and the tent was taught and felt sturdy. We had perfect weather so i can't review the "weather-proofness" but I'll post up again if it rains/snows on our next outing.

Here's a few pics (sorry some are blurry)

Looks great on your Cruiser.
I have not had a chance yet to take my Maggiolina AirLand out yet, something always comes up when I want to go camping such as this weekend.

I will get it out sometime this summer though...
I will be sure to add pics to this thread.
