So, with new fluids in on the diffs, transfer case and tranny, I went out with my wife and kids to do some hiking. Well, I discovered a reverse issue, similar to this:
1994 FZJ80 Transmission Problem

Starting out slow in reverse gear, everything is fine. As I hit the gas to go faster, it starts to slip until I let the gas pedal go, and then it engages again. From what I read in the above post, I would guess the NSS? Someone had mentioned if all the gear indicator lights are out in the speedometer, it's a faulty NSS. I checked the tranny fluid level as soon as I got home, and it was at the hot mark. So, it's not a lack of fluid in there. And it drives fine in D or 1 or 2.

Would a faulty NSS cause this Reverse issue?

We're you at complete stop when you put it in reverse? Has it done it again can you reproduce it?

Yup. We got a little lost, and I hit a dead end. The road was pretty narrow. So, instead of a U-turn back, I went reverse, and that's when it started happening. I was at a complete stop. I didn't try it again because I wasn't sure if it would make things worse if I kept doing it.

I have an extra 94 tranny with 196k milles i Dont know how you killed yours but those things are indestructible for pm if you go that route.

Definitely not me. I've only had this for less than 6 months. I'm actually saving this thing. Most people would have passed up on it or parted it. And I'm hoping I don't need to replace the tranny. It does go in reverse, but I never gassed in reverse like I did today. Usually, when I reverse, it's just a slow roll.

My 94 does the exact same thing and has since I bought the truck. Slips in reverse, no D light, and no reverse lights.
I took the NSS apart to see if there was anything noticeable and there wasn’t. I would bet many, many dollars it’s the NSS I have a feeling it’s the plastic connector at the fire wall. One of these days I’ll get it fixed but I’m going on 5 years with no noticeable issues

That's somewhat of a relief. Since owning mine, I've noticed a lot of the issues I've had so far have been common with these cars. So, it make things easy to fix or deal with.

How would the NSS cause slippage? It should prevent you from starting in gear, but slipping in reverse only?

I understand slipping in reverse (for A440s, A442s and A343s) to be an early indicator of a failing transmission.

Bummer. Well, I guess I'll see what happens. As for NSS, I have no idea what that even does. Never heard of it in other average cars that I've owned. I just read about it.

Have you checked to see if there are stored trans codes?

I haven't. But I plan on taking her to H&H Automotive in Charlotte in a few weeks. I think I've taken her as far as I could go. I'll have him check it out fully and see what he finds.

the nss is referring to the (netural safety switch) it just keeps your vehicle from being started in gear. do your gear selector lights work in sync with your transmission selector lever? park, r, d, 2, 1 etc? if everything matches and it starts ok, i doubt the NSS is causeing any issues. how did your transmission fluid look when you changed it?

Make sure that it is fully in gear. My 94 will show D on the shifter but the dash lights will dance between 2 and D. It’s an adjustment I need to make, and it probably has no relation to your R problem, but I’m stupid (and hope to help and/or confuse) so I’ll mention it.

Ah. Well, then I know the NSS is working. Because I cranked it one time, and it didn't start. I was panicking because I thought maybe the starter died. Then, I realized for some reason, I shut the car and left in in Drive. Doh! BUT...the gear selector lights on the speedo cluster do not work. None of them light up. Someone had mentioned if none of those light up when you switch gears, then the NSS is to blame. As far as fluid, I was actually surprised it was bright red, like new.

Definitely fully in gear. None of those indicator lights has ever showed any sign of life since I took ownership.

I was stymied by the “no start in gear” at the Xmas party. Spent 30 minutes testing everything except except the shifter before realizing I left it in R the night before and was still able to remove the key.

Yup, I must have been in a hurry. That, or I forgot it wasn't manual. LOL! Every car I've owned before this was manual.

I agree with all that it doesn’t make sense that the NSS would cause this issue, but I spent weeks researching this and talking to people with the same issue. In almost every instance when they replaced the NSS it resolved the issue
